Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

What is the difference between a housekeeper and a house cleaner?

Although some house cleaning and housekeeping duties might overlap, a house cleaner is charged with the top-to-bottom cleaning of a home. House cleaner duties typically include basic and deep house cleaning, such as washing and sanitizing countertops, floors, tubs, toilets, kitchens and more.

Housekeepers or maids are hired to lightly clean and maintain certain aspects of the home. This might include dusting, washing dishes, changing sheets, doing some meal preparation and restocking the client’s groceries and personal care products.

It’s also worth noting that a housekeeper or maid is usually one individual employed to a home (sometimes hired as a live-in), while a house cleaner is oftentimes accompanied by a team of cleaners.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

How do I choose the best house cleaning service?

When searching for the best house cleaning service near you, consider the depth of your cleaning needs, your budget and the size and condition of your home. Read reviews from verified customers of any cleaning service that you’re looking to hire. Also, check out the reviewers’ photos and do background checks on reviewers to ensure they’re not employed by established cleaning firms or maid agencies.

Bright House Cleaning Service did an excellent job cleaning our house. Sylvia was very polite, knowledgeable, professional and very thorough in her cleaning. After she cleaned our house for the first time, she pointed out imperfections in our wood floors that I never noticed – I was very impressed with this level of detail she pays attention to. She really went above and beyond in her cleaning responsibilities. She folded the laundry that was in the dryer. She folded the small blankets in our little dog’s pen enclosures. She even organized the closet we keep the cleaning supplies in. The services provided were very reasonably priced. We are going to continue to use Bright House Cleaning Service and we highly recommend you give them a try.

I just had my 2 bedroom 2 bathroom home deep cleaned by Radiance Cleaning and I couldn’t be happier! They went above and beyond to get up all the dog hair throughout the house and I don’t think my stove and oven have ever looked better. The bathrooms look great and they even replaced the burned out light bulbs in the bathroom with the new ones I had. The floors, carpet and kitchen all look fantastic, too. I would very highly recommend Radiance Cleaning for your house cleaning needs!!

I was absolutely floored when I walked into the house after Impeccable Shine cleaned it. My mouth literally dropped. It looks like a brand new house! From the baseboards, to the counters, to the shower, to the floors, everything was spotless, bright, shiny, and looked brand new. I cannot recommend these guys enough!

Martyna is fabulous! She comes monthly and after she is done with our house you would have no idea that we have two large, furry dogs and a baby. I don't know what we would do without her! My husband said he has not seen the house so clean since the week we moved in.

I was only able to select three qualities. But five on five. For sure. So accommodating and responsive. Amazing work. Was very efficient at working and has a very amiable personality. Thank you so much for making my house look spectacularly clean.

Very pleasant and initially responsive, bit some lack of communication caused a serious problematic turn of events for us. Quite a few things we had discussed didn't get cleaned, but she does a hell of a lot of cleaning around the house, mostly big clean which I was overall pleased with. The communication issues arose after two cleanings and she fell through on daycare. She stated issues came up and she couldn't come for the week and a half promised after planning since June...but mentioned this with under a week to go only after I messaged her. I'm sorry to say that losing my days of work along with specifically requested areas to be cleaned that never were means our business relationship has ended. Other reviews check out, she is incredibly kind but not as reliable when we were in need. Please don't respond to this about my messy house or how I didn't do something, I believe those previous responses are in poor taste.

I was looking for a deep clean for a move in of my new house and was quoted $140 for my 1100sqft, 2 bedroom, 1 bath condo. I opted for the additional services of oven and fridge cleaning at an extra $10 each. I specified I was looking for a deep clean, and that I wanted the kitchen cabinets cleaned inside. My appt was for 9am on Thursday, and at 9 I got a text they would be there in 10min- they ended up texting at 9:17 that they were there, so didn’t get started until about 9:30. I had once again specified that I wanted the insides of the cabinets cleaned, the bathroom cleaned really well, along with all of the normal cleaning included (and the oven and fridge which I paid extra for). Less then 2 hours later I was notified they had finished cleaning. When I got back there to check on it, I was specifically shown the one cabinet that I had opened to show her (which looked clean), the bathroom, the inside of the fridge, and the oven. Everything looked good, but this was a new house so looked pretty clean to begin with. I paid and tipped both of the people who came to clean. My mistake was only seeing the one cabinet she showed me and assuming that meant they were all cleaned- there were crumbs in almost all of the cabinets and some were a lot more disgusting then others. As I walked around more later I noticed several other things left such as soot on the ground in front of the fireplace, and a spider web and dead bee in the door runner of the patio doors. I was also told vinegar was used for cleaning, which does not disinfect, and I would not consider a product to be used for a “deep cleaning” (which is what I paid for). I tried reaching back out to the company via Thumbtack several hours later to let them know I was not happy, and their solution was to offer me a $30 credit for my next cleaning. Why would I use them again if they couldn’t do it right the first time? I spent/wasted $190 total (between cost of service and tip) on a very poor cleaning job. I was then told they could come back at 1pm on Saturday “no charge” (like it was a favor) to do a more thorough cleaning. I had at first agreed, but then changed my mind because having them come in the middle of the day while I’m trying to unpack and have stuff all over now would be too much of a mess. I myself at 35 weeks pregnant cleaned all of the cabinets last night- and they were still disgusting! Extremely disappointed with the lack of service and professionalism with this company. I based my choice on their previous good reviews, but I’m not even sure now how they got those. Would NOT use again or recommend to anyone!

I am giving 1 star because it's not possible to leave 0 star rating. First of all I was initially quoted $290 for a move in deep cleaning, after the "pro" contacted me, she said the price would be $500 because of the square feet of the property. She was friendly and explained she would clean baseboards, cabinets, appliances, etc and that everything would be cleaned to fit the high expectations of a deep cleaning. I had a hiccup with my closing date and she did accommodate me. However, when the date came, I paid her up front cash and after walking through the property we agreed on all the spots that needed to be treated, she said she would lock up after she left. I had problems with my moving company and was only able to move 8 days later, which she was aware of. I was very disappointed to find a house that seem to be vacuumed and lightly cleaned, nowhere near to a deep cleaning. I took several pictures of visible parts of the house that should have been cleaned. I found grease and grim in kitchen , dust everywhere, fans and blinds, doors with juice splatters, mold on refrigerators seals , mold in showers, etc, etc. She replied saying that it was too big of a house and that she overlooked certain spots but she would come in a week and a half to redo whatever she missed (which was A LOT). I kept unpacking only to find more uncleaned spots. At this point I was dissatisfied with the service provided let alone feeling I was taken advantage of. I cancelled the appointment for re doing what she missed and asked her to refund me with $350 and she could keep $150 for her poor service provided. She stated in messages that she would not refund because she was in my home cleaning for 19 hours!!! from 11am to 6am the next. I was very upset since she did not even tell me she would spend the night over and she did not care of the liability. When I said I would escalate the issue, she replied she would only refund me $80!!! The attached pictures are just a couple of many pictures that show what she claims was a 19hr deep cleaning.

I hired Mirsada to do a deep clean of our house. She was excellent! Very friendly and kind. I felt comfortable with her around my children and my dog right away. She was very thorough and did an excellent job. It was a big project and she took her time and made sure everything was done right! I would recommend her to anyone!

DO NOT HIRE. The maid that showed up did not provide a “deep clean” as requested. Skipped rooms. She asked to use my vacuum cleaner upon arrival and made a comment that we had the same vacuum but mine was much newer and hers had duct tape on it. Long story short after she left I discovered she had taken my vacuum cleaner and left hers. The first call into the company they spoke to the maid and she said she didn’t use my vacuum at all. Then I got an email stating they could explain how the duct tape got on my vacuum… another email turned into she switched those hoses on the vacuums and forgot to switch them back. The maid is a thief. The company was unwilling to replace the vacuum and was trying to send her back to my house! AND unwilling to compensate for such poor customer service. She also broke my dishwasher, but according to the company it must be a malfunction with my appliance.
