Our experience with Jeff and Dun-Rite was fantastic! Jeff is truly an experienced professional, who is knowledgeable, dependable and delivers great quality in his work. We had several projects that required woodwork, electrical, exterior siding repairs and painting, and installation of a storm door. Jeff and his associate, Jason, performed all of the work steadfast, with high quality and for very fair prices. They clean up nicely, too. Above all, he is honest and trustworthy. You never know who you will get when it comes to handy people and Jeff was a true gem. We will contact him for all of our future needs...and I highly recommend you do, too!

He quoted me $250 which was $15 cheaper than the other guy I originally went with. The first guy was 2 hours late but never called to inform me so I cancelled and called Pro Window Works. He came out, looked at the window and told me it would be $200 because of the type of window and replaced it on the spot. Not many people are honest like that.

I hired Lyndell to install a shower surround kit in my master bathroom and ended up hiring him to do so much more! He was able to repair some pesky woodpecker damage on my chimney chase. He noticed some loose cedar siding and repaired that as well. The chimney looks great and is better than the original construction. He came in under budget and was very thorough with his work. Couldn't be happier. The shower kit and door kit installation went just a smoothly. Lyndell performed a very "clean demolition, made some structural repairs and installed the shower kit with a high level of craftsmanship and care for my home. The shower surround also came in under budget and looks (and works) great! I'm very pleased with the work he performed at my house. Side note: take the time to get to know Lyndell...he is capable of more than you think. His background is amazing and his work ethic is refreshing. I'm planning on hiring Lyndell for future projects at my new home.

We had been getting bids for a couple weeks from different contractors to have almost all our windows replaced and the price gap between quotes were pretty disconcerting. Also, some other contractors told us we could not do this or that for some reason. Russ was our last bid before making a decision. We did not need to tell him our budget range. His bid was fair. We did not feel pressure with our decision to close the deal. He kept us updated along the way and checked in on us to make sure we were happy. We had other projects come up such as flooring, ceiling/wall repair and a new skylight and we are currently working with him to have completed. We also did a walk-through with him upon completion of the window project with some minor cosmetic issues and he is also resolving. He has really been helping us making this the house of our dreams and we feel very comfortable with him and trust his help and guidance. Thanks Russ!

Ed did an excellent job. I love my kitchen remodel. I get so many compliments on my new backsplash. He had cabinets, dishwasher and counter tops installed quickly. Plus installed a new window, ceiling fan and doors. He even did some minor upgrades at no cost, like changing my outlets. Was veryour friendly and efficient. Already have plans for him to do more work, backsplash in my bathroom and flooring in basement.

I hired Mark to complete the majority of a bathroom remodel. I hired his team to install drywall, mud and tape the drywall. I also had him tile the shower and the floor. Mark also did the shower plumbing, installed a new tub, fixed a bad tub drain, hung two doors, installed casing and framed a window. Mark's price was reasonable. He was not the cheapest, nor the most expensive. But his communication led me to hiring him. The job was expected to take 5 days, however he ended up finishing on a Saturday. He is honest, very giving with advice and does good work. He is a jack of all trades and if I ever need a hand, I now have contractor I can trust. I recommend him to my friends if they need some work done.

As a homeowner for the past twenty years - I’ve dealt with many contractors - many of them have been dishonest and over priced. Dwayne is far better than the rest. I hired him to redo the caulking in three of my bathrooms as I’m getting ready to sell my house. Dwayne went above and beyond the call of duty - not only did he repair the caulking but also helped me to identify repairs that needed to be done. He fixed my home within my budget. He was kind, considerate and very patient. I appreciated his work and honesty and will be hiring him for work in the future.

Ray and his team did an amazing job on the exterior of our building. We needed someone to come in and clean it up; do some caulking, flashing repair, and painting. They accepted the job and completed it in one day! They were punctual and the price he quoted me was right on the money! He also discussed all the pricing with me before the start of the job. Ray is a stand up guy and we WILL be hiring him again! We were very happy with him and his team as well as the completed job!

Jerry is very nice guy, and he came to me twice to discuss the window project. His price is very reasonable, and he ordered high quality windows. The window installation process was very smooth, and passed the village inspection without any problems. I would use Jerry or Remodel Rangers again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
