We had a great experience with ASAP tree services. They came out to our home to give us a quote on pruning/crowning a tree within 24 hours of us calling them and cut the tree within the same week for a good price. We were informed the day before they came out that they would be coming and an approximate time. The crew was very professional and did a quick but beautiful job trimming our tree. They also raked our lawn after the trimming was done and left our yard in good condition. We would definitely recommend them to others and will be using them again in the future for our tree needs.

They removed 2 small/medium sized trees, trimmed a big one, and pruned another medium-sized tree. They quoted me just to top he medium tree, but when they got there they saw that the tree needed a total makeover. They did the extra work on the tree, to do it right, at no extra charge. That is good customer service, how all businesses should operate, and a good way to get more business. In fact, I'm so pleased with their service I'm hiring them to come back in the Spring to landscape my yard around the house.

I hadn't been able to keep up with my yard for several years. I contacted Michael to do pruning, tree trimming, weeding, mulching, etc. When we met, he listened to me, looked carefully at the property, took notes, and made many good suggestions. He prepared a detailed proposal for the job,and offered a reasonable price. He was flexible about when I needed him to come. He did a great job!! Trees trimmed; shrubs pruned, very professionally. Gardens - weeded, mulched, tended - look great. He took care with other small details. The whole yard is now beautiful, thanks to Michael's careful and excellent work; and it is a credit to the neighborhood! He is easy to talk to, pleasant, and kind. I give him an A+++ for his excellent work at a reasonable cost (and for being such a nice and easygoing person) - and highly recommend him.

Nathan provided a quick and competitive quote for tree pruning in Fishers this spring. He is conscientious, detailed, and hard-working. He completed a great quality job, on a Sunday no less. I'll use Nathan again for my future landscaping needs.

Nate Hill pruned a large silver maple which was hanging over the sunroom on the back part of the house. He trimmed about 1/3 of it. In order to do this, he had to climb the tree and use ropes so that the large branches would not fall on the sunroom. He was very careful with this process. Afterwords, he cleaned up all of the debris by chipping up the limbs and stacking the large logs. In addition he also cut down some large yew bushes which were blocking the front windows, and after cutting them, he ground up the stumps. He was very professional, and finished the job in a timely manner. I would highly recommend this tree service. L. McGlothlin

Pros: Speedy, reasonable professional service. A service provider who actually does what they say will they do and when! Cons: Based on my experience with MDs Tree Medics, there isn’t one thing they could improve on. On Monday morning, a holiday, I went online to request quoted for tree trunk removal - three large eyesores! I wasn’t expecting a response but I got one! Dalton replied to the request right away with an introduction, general rates and an estimated quote, and included a photo of previous work in progress. Dalton communicated with me the time frame in which he thought he could do the work and reached out to me later in the day to let me know they had an opening. The crew arrived when they said they would and accessed the property as we discussed/planned. Dalton met me to walk the property and take a look at the work that needed to be done while the crew set up and prepared. While onsite I showed him several other stumps that needed to be removed. He was able to add those to the work list. They did a fantastic job removing the stumps and offered to leave the chips or take them away. They even took time to remove a few stumps from rather large bushes we had removed! Afterward, they left the site clean. They followed up with no-pressure suggestions for pruning trees, and they spent time educating us about the trees on our property. Overall we are extremely satisfied with the project. MDs Tree Medics was wonderful to work with and we will definitely call on them for tree service again in the future!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
