Jon provided the music for the cocktail hour of our wedding on Sunday, September 18, 2016. We must start out by saying that, because the entire wedding was one big whirlwind, we did not have the pleasure of being able to hear a majority of Jon’s performance. However, we did hear through word of mouth that the guests really enjoyed the music that Jon provided. We communicated exclusively through e-mail. He was very kind and patient with us as we tried to figure out what types of music we wanted to play. Jon was able to send us a list of songs that he was well-versed in and that accommodated the genres we ultimately decided on (latin, jazz, bossa nova, R&B). This made our lives easier as it helped us to focus and eventually narrow our choices down to a small selection of songs. We finally got a chance to meet face to face at the wedding venue. He was very sweet and very formal (and he speaks Spanish too!). We did have a bit of confusion regarding whether or not Jon would use his own personal keyboard or the piano provided by the wedding venue but thankfully everything worked out in the end. Jon was VERY reasonably priced; however, he does not provide a contract (but because Jon is such a professional, this was not an issue at all). We would absolutely recommend Jon. And like we had mentioned to him at the venue, hopefully we have another opportunity to hire him so that we can listen to and enjoy his musical talents in its entirety. Thanks again Jon!

Bob is great! Patient and fun. We have worked with him for over a year and he even organized four 6-year-olds for a band for the school talent show in a very short time.

Matt performed at our wedding ceremony and it was the perfect addition. Churches typically allow only approved religious songs during the ceremony itself, however, Matt's guitar playing at the beginning and end of the ceremony was a great way to incorporate our own musical favorites and really personalize the experience for us and our guests. I had numerous guests comment on his guitar playing skills and how they enjoyed the live music and recognizable songs while they waited.

You'll need a bigger dance floor! Holy cow! My wife and I have seen Sundance perform now at three weddings (two family friends and now our own wedding). The first decision we made regarding our wedding was not a date or a venue, but rather that we HAD to have this band! They play a wide variety of music from your typical dinner music to the classic rock n' roll and current pop. From day one our communication with Jim, the band leader, was fantastic. We didn't have easy requests either...my father-in-law is a big Rolling Stones fan and his request was to have a Stones song for the Father/Daughter dance. They learned it and even performed several other Stones songs throughout the night that they had learned! The band showed up early and was ready before guests began arriving to the reception. The band took 1-2 short breaks but during the breaks had DJ music to make sure no one left the dance floor. The dance floor was packed all night long! My cousin grabbed the mic and sang "Don't Stop Believin'" with the band and my uncle joined in on the jaw-harp for some "Sweet Home Chicago" to end the night! Having a band at your wedding will cost you a few more green-backs than having a DJ. But lets be honest, who remembers the food, booze, or decor? No one! But everyone remembers whether they were dancing all night and having a great time. You'll get that and more with Sundance. This band is worth the money and if you are a little strapped on budget you can always cut a horn from the ensemble and save a few bucks. But don't...you know you want the whole sha-bang! Quit looking around for another "wedding band" and snatch this "awesome band" before they are booked. You won't regret it! I only wish I could have another event to have Sundance perform at but I'm not hoping for a second wedding! Brendan & Amy

I cannot express how AMAZING Kathryn and her band were at our wedding! It was the first thing our guests commented to me on: "Where did you find her?!" "She has an amazing voice!" Kathryn has a long repertoire list that is packed with songs of many genres. She also worked with us to incorporate any songs we wanted which weren't on the original list. She and her guitarist provided beautiful background music during our lunch and cocktails, and more danceable selections later on. Their music was such an important part of our event and I would hire her again in a second!

Artist collective is a very professional business that has the musician in their best interest. I personally have worked with them and it was so nice to have them take care of the "business" end, so I could concentrate on the creative end with my band. AC set us up with a photo/video shoot and it was a success! Highly recommended by us!!

I can't stress enough how much we loved working with Manny for our Wedding in October 24, 2014. From the moment we met, we knew he was someone we wanted to play at our ceremony. We didn't want traditional wedding, we wanted something different. We had music from the 80's and 90's that represented our taste, to contemporary music. I highly recommend using Manny, and I know the guests at my wedding does as well.

Audio West Professional DJ Services was one of the best choices that we made when planning our wedding! Our wedding was absolutely amazing thanks to them. The music catered to all of our guests, the lighting was beautiful, the DJ kept our guests engaged and everything flowed seemlessly! After a brief conversation where we were asked questions about what we envisioned for our fantasy wedding, Audio West then met and exceeded our requests with Ray Jones' special touches along the way. We can not thank him enough! Our guests still ask for Audio West' information to book for them for their events. If you have a special occasion expect to have your event turn into your dream with Audio West Professional DJ Services!

Michelle was wonderful from the moment we met her. She gracefully interacted with all of our guests (unlike another vendor of ours) and played absolutely beautifully. Her music really set our wedding apart and I could not recommend having Michelle play at your wedding or event more. 5 stars!!

We hired Davin to handle the music for a friend's memorial service. We did not give him much time, but he was able to quickly hire musicians and pick songs and interlude music which added so much to the service. Afterward, many people commented on his beautiful and touching performance and on how powerful the music was. He added so much to the service and we will always be grateful for the way he helped to honor our friend. We highly recommend him.

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

          What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

          • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
          • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
          • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
