Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. To find out how much your new deck will cost, get free estimates from the best deck contractors near you.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

Is it hard to build a deck yourself?

If you don’t have the skills, experience and qualifications, building a deck may be difficult for you to do on your own.

Structural integrity is key when constructing anything, but especially something you plan to have your family and friends use regularly. The safety of the structure takes careful planning and experience.

Professional contractors have the knowledge to make a safe, beautiful deck for you. They also know the proper permits and insurance required to legally build a new deck or remodel a porch in your city.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a general contractor when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a general contractor, avoid any physical contact, don’t shake hands, keep 6 feet of distance between you and the pro and sanitize all involved surfaces. Also, use digital platforms to communicate and make payments.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you (and so you can pay the best price).

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Mike gave us expert advice on our weathered deck, which stains would work best and worked tirelessly to completion. The deck looks terrific. We'll hire him again and recommend to our friends and neighbors.

Michael removed our old decaying deck, repaired and strengthened framing support structure where needed, and replaced decking and steps. He did this all during the 2020 pandemic when lumber was hard to find. He checked suppliers daily for lumber and would rush over to get boards when available. We are so pleased with the quality and craftsmanship of our new deck, and feel we gained a friend in the process. We wanted to stain and paint it ourselves, so Michael made recommendations for us. We will enjoy this deck for years to come and highly recommend Michael Andre.

Hard working, honest, extremely fair pricing, amiable, and accommodating. Will 100% recommend and hire again for future projects! Hired to repair small section of a porch due to rot and boards not supporting weight. Recognized further rot and that the previous builder did not use treated lumber leading to this problem. Made time and accommodation in his schedule to repair entire porch decking (a significantly larger job). While doing so, reinforced under decking and increased sturdiness/safety of deck. He did not attempt to sell more than what was needed, as remaining under-decking was in serviceable condition. Thank you for the fantastic job!

the main part of the deck repair was done very well. However, the final touches of power washing and staining missed the mark. Power washer damaged a couple of steps in which they should have sanded so not to leave splinters on deck boards. Then some of deck didnt seem to get powered washed. They totally forgot to cover a white downspout which now orange stain. i wish they would taken time in doing the prep work correctly as the i would have been able to rate 4 stars for the total project.

Gary came over to remove a very heavy stain on our back deck. We had tried a few products, power washing, and elbow grease ourselves and nothing was getting this stuff off quickly. Gary assessed the situation and provided two different ways to tackle the job. He was was honest with what could and couldn't be done to the deck. They had to come back a few different days because of rain, and easily accommodated. The deck looks amazing! He did a great job and delivered exactly what he said he was going to. Great communication, and great work!!

Denis Mancia and his crew are hard-working, dependable professionals that brought our 21-year-old deck back to life! It is such a relief to have this job behind us, and to know that our deck is now properly cleaned, beautifully stained and wonderfully protected for the next few years! We met Denis via Thumbtack, and we were impressed with him, his experience and knowledge about decks, right from the start. He was timely with all of his responses to our many questions, we are very happy with the completed results, and we highly recommend Fresh Coat, LLC! "Thank you, Denis!! It was a pleasure working with you!"

Unprofessional, poor quality, and poor follow through is how I would describe Richard’s work. I gave him half of the money for two jobs on Monday. Poor follow through - He told me he’d be there Tuesday, I heard nothing from him Tuesday until I reached out he finally came Wednesday, and didn’t return until Saturday afterwards. Unprofessional - told me about some other women not paying him for doing her deck started asking for partial payments saying he didn’t have money to finish my job. Poor quality - He initially didn’t sand the deck all the way down, but claimed he was almost done and ask for additional portions of payment. Then came back sanded down and did touch ups leaving the deck uneven and rushed rails and skirts leaving portion untouched. Richard would not come and finish the deck until I gave him more money. I gave him 1/2 to start with (as agreed and confirmed in the beginning stain was included), then another $200 after he gave the sad story of the other person not paying. After 2 weeks, I had to purchase another gallon of stain and finish my deck myself. He left my siding damaged from the power washer and covered in stain since he didn’t prep his space correctly. I now will have to pay for my siding to be fixed and had to buy the stain to finish my deck, so no I’m not giving anymore money. June 1st he said he was mailing my gate fob I have yet to receive it.

Bill did an excellent job installing my new deck. He provided a detailed quote with a few options requested during the walk through. He provided a honest install date, which was a few months out. He was patient with us as we made a few changes to the design between the initial walk through and the install date. We were out of town during the installation. Bill provided frequent progress reports including photos. We were happy to see a great looking, well built deck on our return. We would not hesitate to hire Bill again!

Chris was very informative and helpful. We had some bad experiences with deck staining by other entities, and this was totally different. Always responded to a text. His advice was spot on. So happy that we have kept him doing other jobs for us.

Redid the railing on our deck. Provided all of the lumber, and even came up with some unique ideas that I never considered as they were on site. Always communicated about the timing of the project, and the two men working on site were professional every step of the way. Would highly recommend!

He responded to my request within minutes on the Thumbtack app and promptly gave me a quote after we talked that included materials so I didn’t have to do anything but choose a color.
