Going in our expectations were nothing less than perfect, picture perfect. Jacks Von Liria exceeded our expectations! Jacks Von Liria was the consummate professional. He arrived timely and prepared. He had a clear vision, a great attitude, and contagious positive energy. Once he began working, his style was clam, effortless and fluid as he implemented our vision and transformed us to picture perfect; all the while it felt as if we were chatting with a best friend and unaware of any last minute ‘nerves’ or jitters. He delivered the same ‘picture perfect’ expectation to both my mother-in-law and me. We loved working with Jacks Von Liria, loved the makeup, and, most importantly, we loved how beautiful Jacks Von Liria made us feel. We are fortunate to have found Jacks Von Liria and are truly grateful for his work. We would recommend Jacks Von Liria to any bridal party, especially with a diverse age demographic.

Ann Line is not only a cosmetologist, but also holds a barbering license. She listens to what you feel your needs are rather than what she thinks, but may give suggestions. Because of all the home perms I've given myself in the past years (and possibly meds), Anne has made suggestions of various products I might use to give my hair a thicker look. The perms she has given me always turn out great and because of the two "cowlicks" I have along my back hairline, Ann's barbering skills make a big difference. I have never liked having "barbering shears" used on my neckline hair, so I am very pleased Ann uses scissors instead of "barbering shears" or trimmers. Although I only ask for Ann, my family has used other stylists in tHAIRapy Salon and have been very satisfied. Ann was recommended to me over 9 years ago when she owned Absolute Style and I followed her to Historic Irvington. During the many times I've been in the salon over the years, I have never witnessed an unhappy customer.

I need to start by saying I was not unhappy at my former salon. I needed to find someone closer to my home. I am so very happy with my cut and color. Big plus is I was shown the best way to dry and style my hair. I will be a regular client from now on.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a facial?

A facial is a restorative cosmetic treatment for the skin on your face. Facials can be performed by a licensed cosmetician, esthetician, dermatologist or other qualified provider. Spas,  medi-spas and other skin care centers offer facials. Most offer different types of facials that address the most pressing skin care needs such aging, dryness, sagging, pigmentation, etc.

The national average cost for a facial is $60-$80. More complex facials, such as microdermabrasion or chemical peel, will cost more, as will services provided by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. The products used can also affect the cost of your facial; high-end creams and serums will likely result in a higher cost. For most non-medical facials, the practitioner will perform a skin assessment, determining your skin type and learning about your lifestyle, diet and skin care concerns. Then the facialist will cleanse and exfoliate the skin, extract any blackheads and clear clogged pores, give a facial massage, apply a treatment mask and then apply moisturizers. Typically facials are relaxing and restorative, leaving your skin clear and dewy.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

    • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
    • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
    • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
    • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
    • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
    • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
    • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

    • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
    • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
    • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
    • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
    • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

    Which facial is best?

The wide variety of names, methods, techniques and technologies for facials can be confusing. The best facial for you depends on your skin care needs. If you’re aging and want to address wrinkles and sun spots, you may want a chemical peel, while for acne you may want a deep pore cleansing treatment. Consulting with a licensed esthetician, cosmetologist or dermatologist will help guide your choice. Skin care professionals specialize in assessing your skin and determining which course of treatment will help you achieve your goals. Here is a basic overview of the best facials for different outcomes:

    • Reduce wrinkles: A chemical peel can help stimulate skin cell turnover, creating a fresh new layer thanks to the salicylic or glycolic acids. It’s important to work with an experienced professional when getting a chemical peel so you choose the right level for your skin type.
    • Prevent acne: Enzyme facials or LED facials help battle acne breakouts.
    • Smooth skin tone: Microdermabrasion facials are done using a small tool that polishes off your dead skin cells to reveal a fresh layer of skin underneath.
    • Relax and rejuvenate: A traditional European facial often features warm steamed towels, a facial massage, deep skin cleansing and exfoliation, extractions (as desired), face masks, and applications of serums and moisturizers to leave your skin refreshed and you feeling great.
