Terri was great to work with! She came to my daughter's pirate-themed party prepared, and ready to go (wearing a great hat, too!) She did face painting and made great balloon swords for all of the kids. She made my daughter's party more special and memorable.

Christina did a FANTASTIC job with the flowers for my wedding. From the very beginning she went above and beyond from listening to my ideas and also showing me ideas to pull everything together. The flowers truly pulled my rustic themed wedding together. When she first arrived and showed me my bouqet it was truly breathtaking. It was EXACTLY what I wanted. The centerpieces were beautiful and we got SO many compliments on them. Not only did she do a fantastic job on the flowers but she stayed with us until the ceremony started to make sure everything was perfect. She went above and beyond her job and helped with so many little details and for that, I am so thankful. She is AMAZING! Thank you SO much!

Our event was a sit-down dinner party for 20 guests. Chef Julie was amazing from our very first phone call. She assisted with picking out the menu, taking our very rough ideas and creating an awesome experience. Chef created an "experience" far beyond just the taste of the food. She is able to provide as much or as little as you want in terms of china, dinnerware, linens...and she didn't leave until all dishes were clean. Usually, we spend all of the next day cleaning and she took care of everything that night! With her decades of experience, her menu options are unlimited. We gave a very high level (and uniformed) theme. Then, she talked us through options covering everything piece of the meal. She improved on every idea we had. For example, our guests always enjoy having shrimp cocktail with spicy horseradish. She took that concept and created 3 different shrimp appetizers, one classic and two others marinated to match the theme of the main dishes. These tiny details were amazing. Thanks so much for making this a great night!!

I highly recommend using Monilisa Events for any parties or events you may have. I hired Lisa to do a thanksgiving party for me and my family...and she laid it out. The decorations, especially the dining table were just beautiful. The food was great and the atmosphere very festive. She even thought of the little kids. She fixed a table just for them and made a turkey out of paper bags. It really looked like a turkey and when the kids "carved" the was full of popcorn. It's the small things like that, that make her the best event planner in town in my opinion.

Tina styled an event I held at the Bloomington Country Club for a local non-profit. It was beautiful and attendees were so impressed. She worked tirelessly. I have also had the privilege of attending themed birthday parties and other parties she has coordinated. They have all been so detail oriented and ran smoothly. I highly recommend Tina and Design to a T!

Kim put together a gorgeous (and yummy!) popcorn favor bar for our wedding reception. We loved that she used a local small business to provide the popcorn. She was easy to work with and very prompt to respond to our questions. We barely even knew she was there on the day of; she worked with our venue and planner and was there on time to get everything set up. The display itself was beautiful and the popcorn was a huge hit with our guests! I’ve recommended Candy Creations to friends and will use Kim again myself if I have any parties to plan!

JJ listened to my ideas and took them to the next level, but stayed within my budget. Laura brought some wonderful ideas for food and had a beautiful presentation. Everyone talked for weeks afterward about how great the party was and how much fun they had had. Mine was a birthday party and I had wanted to have a fair theme. Epic Events set up various midway games with custom signs. Each game had an entertaining barker and you won tickets which were redeemed for cool prizes later. Laura served standard fair food but with a whimsical flair. It was absolutely the best party ever!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a wedding planner?

A wedding planner is a professional service provider whose job it is to organize and execute all the details of a couple’s wedding. A wedding planner can be contracted at any stage in the wedding planning process to help to any degree the couple is willing to pay for. Wedding planning is similar to event planning in that a planning team handles the coordination of multiple wedding elements including catering, venue, guests, entertainment, decor, transportation and more. Anyone who has ever been involved in a wedding can confirm that wedding planning is hard work. Experience brings wisdom when it comes to avoiding or resolving day-of challenges. There is no legal regulatory body that oversees or certifies wedding planning as an industry. Anyone who chooses can call themselves a wedding planner. When looking for a wedding planner, be sure to read reviews, and make smart hiring decisions by asking about licenses and insurance.

How much does it cost for a wedding planner?

Wedding planning is a full-time job — unless you hire a professional to handle the hard work for you. The cost for a wedding planner will depend on the level of service you desire. The least expensive wedding planner option is day-of coordination, then partial service, then full-service.

The national average cost for wedding planning is between $990 and $1,300. Costs are greatly affected by region, with rural or smaller-town wedding planners often far more affordable than planners in higher-cost cities. Here are some examples of the various levels of wedding planning and their potential average costs:

  • Day-of-wedding coordination: $800-$1,700. Day-of services can include the planner finalizing all details, creating a timeline, confirming vendors and overseeing all setup, day-of activities, and cleanup. The couple does all the front-end planning and contracts all the vendors. Time commitment could be about 15-25 hours, depending on pricing.
  • Partial service: $1,500-$3,800. Here the planner works with the couple from the beginning, helping contract vendors, creating a timeline, and overseeing all details of day-of execution. Time commitment could be about 30-60 hours, depending on package and pricing.
  • Full service: $3,500-$8,000 or more. Here the professional handles all wedding and planning details including working on design, securing rentals, getting the venue and vendors, and handling complete execution of the event. Time commitment could be 50-150 hours or more, depending on package and pricing.
  • Consulting: $50-$150 per hour for design, vendor, reception and other wedding planning consultation.
