Keith did an awesome job. He fixed 3 circuits in the breaker box, a wall switch, a ceiling fan and 2 basement light sockets in less than 4 hours. He guarantees his work and had no issue showing me exactly what he had done. We are already planning his next project!

Incredible service. Fast to respond, fast to complete excellent work. I had them replace all the exposed galvanized piping in my basement with copper.... I cannot believe the water pressure I'm receiving now!!

Marek laid tile, placed drywall, and placed a vanity where I asked. I had a small issue with the placement of an outlet, but everything went very well. I would hire him again.

Mike was very professional and stuck to his commitment. His crew are hard works and I am amazed at what they got done.... lowering a basement floor 21 inches. There were some conflicts in scheduling the pouring of the concrete but in the end he stayed true to his commitment. I would definitely recommend him in the future.

Jose showed up with an assistant on time and worked tirelessly all day to complete switching out 8 interior doors. The job had its obstacles here and there due to it being an old house with not so straight door jams but he had a solution every time and made sure to check with me every step of the way if I was ok with what would be the end product! They cleaned up very nicely and I will be using him again for additional door replacements in future in my basement. I painted the doors after install.

Jeff worked within my very short time constraints. He came on board to drywall after I'd had drain tiles installed in my basement and did the necessary repairs. I'd recommend him.

Vince came out to quote the repair of a cracked cast iron pipe. He spent a considerable amount of time diagnosing the issue and prescribing an alternate repair (the pipe was inaccessible due to its location) Vince ran a new line from the second floor to the basement, eliminating the problem. He did the job in a professional manner, cleaning up completely prior to leaving. The price he quoted after his diagnostic was not only fair, but was not increased when he ran into some difficulties during the repair. I would highly recommend him for this type of work.

T & M did a fabulous job getting a home that was in rough condition ready for sale. Besides painting the main floor, they brought a basement back to life and repaired some unsightly issues. The house shows very well. They were thorough and professional. I would use them again. Very satisfied.

Julio's team was very punctual and flexible to my project needs. He was tasked with finishing my basement and he did a beautiful job with the drywalling and tiling. He also came back to fix some floor tiling that were in level. The only thing I would recommend he up his game is on the electrical side ensuring everything is up to code.

Big Bros Development completely rebuilt a basement shower stall for me. It included replacing a wall, putting in underlayment board, tiling, new shower pan, installing a new sink and vanity, painting, etc. They did very high quality work, including coming up with some suggested changes to my original plan that were very good. I would have given them five stars, but for the fact that the job cost me more than I wanted to spend; but on the other hand, they were able to start on the job quickly, and finished it in a timely manner, so the shower was out of use for only a short time. Michael was very responsive to my initial requests for an estimate and also in keeping me apprised of the work progress, including photos! I will consider using them again on my next project.

I hired Miles Brazan with All Maintenance a few months ago to complete a basement renovation and bathroom remodel. They did an AMAZING job... Not only was the price competitive but they were able to start the job 3 days after I approved the estimate. They far exceeded all of my expectations and I would immediately turn to them if we were to have any additional renovation needs. These guys are full service -- from creating the design to following through in making it exactly as it was planned. I dealt with Mr. Brazan directly, he was very polite, always at the jobsite and kept everything clean. The job was done exactly on time. I will highly recommend All Maintenance to anyone. Thank you, thank you and THANK YOU!!!‎

Moussa and his crew completely did my basement. Before starting, my basement was completely raw and Moussa worked with me in understanding what work needed to be done how he was going to do it, what the final finishes were going to look like (prior to starting), finished early and was did a tremendous job. I highly recommend Moussa's work. Moussa also gave a fair price, other quotes I received were much higher and doubt they could have done nearly as good of a job. Please contact if you need before / after pictures. All my concerns, big or small, and at any point in the construction process were answered and addressed without hesitation. Nothing to complain about when the job was finished! Task performed (all to code): Framing, drywall, tiled, installed an entire bathroom in the basement (had to install sump pump), concrete, HVAC, gas lines, electrical, lighting, installed a spiral staircase where there was no staircase originally.

My experience with Thomas McNichols was very pleasant. He helped me with the design of my remodeling project with regard to the layout and products. In 2008 I hired Thomas McNichols to remodel my home. I had an unfinished attic which I was now going to finish and add a dormer to. I had them build me two bedrooms, a walk in closet, bathroom, linen closet and 3 storage closets. Central air was also added to my second floor. Before the second floor could be complete, my existing stairways to my attic and basement had to be taken out and rerouted. Brand new stairs were built to my seond floor and basement. Once that project was done, I had my kitchen completely remodeled. It was a complete gut job and they also opened up a back porch to enlarge the kitchen. While the kitchen renovation was going on, new siding was being put on my whole house and new front stairs were built. The entire house renovation took 4 1/2 months to complete. In 2009 I hired Thomas McNichols again to put new siding on my garage and pour a new patio in my backyard. In 2013 I again hired Thomas McNichols to gut and remodel a first floor bathroom which took 3 weeks to complete. At that time, they also opened up a first floor bedroom off my kitchen and converted it to a family room. That job took 10 days to complete. I could not have been more pleased with the work that Thomas Builders & Construction Co. performed at my house. I was very pleased with the outcome. My house is beautiful. This company is very professional, they were always on time, they cleaned up after themselves every day and never left me a mess, and every step of the construction was explained to me along the way. There were no surprises, they were very patient with me and very reasonable in their rates. The quality of the work was outstanding. I recommend Thomas McNichols to everyone I know.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

  • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
  • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
  • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
  • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
