The communication on thumbtack was a bit awkward but once I went to their website and was able to schedule my appointment online, I was good to go. They came when they said they would and did a great job mowing my little backyard and the patch of grass in front. I set up automatic payments for bi-monthly mowing in Alexandria, so I'm looking forward to having this done without having to ask every time I need someone.

I had a large demolition job of removing our concrete patio and large outhouse that was in the backyard. Excellant work, Ed, the owner is a blessing to work with and is always available to talk regardless of the time of day. Recommend highly for your demolition/debris removal needs.

Gabriel did an excellent job. He promptly answered my request for a raised flower bed (approximately 150ft). Once I agreed on the contract, he came back on the day promised and did the entire job in one day. He also rerouted our drain and field a large crack in our backyard with the extra dirt from the flower bed without charging any extra. I had a few questions for him before he started the job, and he probably returned all my calls and answered all my emails; it was very easy to get in touch with him. He and his crew were very professional and very nice. He returned after a couple of days to rinse the bricks with a finishing solution. The flower bed looks gorgeous, and I will definitely use him again when we do our patio in the backyard.

First I would like to describe the reason I chose Victor over the other companies to complete the job of leveling and sodding my back yard. The other companies showed up with one maybe two people, looked around measured and sent me a quote without much conversation. Victor on the other hand showed up with his entire crew and actually talked me thru the process and showed me what needed to be done and how he was going to do it. I was impressed by the commitment he seemed to have to make me happy with the service he was going to provide. Rain set the job back but he stayed in touch throughout giving me updates on when he could begin. The weather cleared on a Sunday and they were there bright and early. Victor and his crew prepped the area like it was his own backyard. Not a square inch was left void of being prepared for new sod. On the day the sod arrived those guys were a hundred miles an hour getting it down so they could keep it moist with the water hoses. The backyard looked so good that he took it a step further and seeded and fertilized my front yard at no charge. If you are looking for a company that prides itself on giving the best product, outstanding customer service, one you can trust, and also competitive prices, look no further than these guys. I am 100% going to use them again for more projects I have in the future.

I hired P&P to give my townhome backyard a complete makeover. They were able to design a new backyard for me that stayed within my budget and solved all my problems. They completed the job very quickly and professionally. The thing I enjoyed the most was the responsiveness and communication to all my messages. I knew that I was dealing with professionals from the first interaction.

Makimanta removed a concrete patio and sidewalks and replaced a crumbling retaining wall and wooden fence in my backyard. More than any other company that gave me a quote, Makimanta really listened to what I was looking for and didn't try to suggest a quick slapdash replacement of just my fence. Their craftsmanship and attention to detail really shine through in the finished fence, and they worked hard to deliver the project on time. They did a really nice job and the entire experience working with them was awesome.

Working with Pedro was an excellent experience. He showed up promptly and on time and had very reasonable prices. I hired him to clean leaves out of my front and backyard and it was a difficult job, but he worked hard and completed it in just a couple of hours. I ended up hiring him for regular lawn service. Highly recommended!

He did an excellent job assembling our backyard play set and swings. He thought it would take 3.5 hours, but in the end, it took nearly 7. Some may fault him for the original low estimate, but I was impressed that he saw the job through into the evening where he finished it by spotlight so it could be ready for the kids in the morning.

I hired Payne's Tree Service to remove three dead and/or dying trees (24" to 48" in circumference) from my backyard. I received four quotes from other companies and am very pleased with my decision to work with Steve. He provided a very fair estimate, was on time and very professional in outlining the cost for the job, and best of all, the work was excellent. The project was complicated by my (unexpectedly) very muddy backyard and the crew took exceptional care not to damage the grass and to avoid leaving ruts in the wet areas. Much appreciated, guys. The crew arrived on time, hauled off all the wood and debris, and left my backyard looking better than it did before they began their work. Kudos all around. I chose not to have the stumps removed because of where the trees were located in a mulched, woody area of the backyard and instructed Steve to cut them as close to the ground as possible - which was done as requested. I give Payne's Tree Service a 5-Star Excellent rating. I know who to call when I need tree removal/trimming services in the future. He followed up the next day with a courtesy call to make sure I was happy with the work as completed. I assured him that I was. P.S. The day after he finished my job, he began a project for my neighbor - who obviously was equally impressed by the work he did for us. Thanks, Steve!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.
