Walter of Hi Solutions responded to my thumbtack query with a competitive bid. On calling he asked succinct questions and reinforced the estimate and committed to a scheduled arrival to fix a pinhole leak in piping at my hot water heater. He arrived on time, was efficient and very courteous and careful to explain what he did and provided me some useful information about the piping in our home. I had previously gotten other estimates which were as much as twice the amount for this simple repair or from companies that would not commit to an estimate without visiting and charging a fee just to look at it. (as high as $85.00). Ct Walter's service gets 5 stars without any reservation or downside..

Herbert was great to work with. We had work on a few things for our office, handyman tasks including building a wooden frame to cover a bunch of wires, cutting a table, fixing a door, hanging few things. Our job was 2 days long. He arrived on time both days, the first day he went to home depot to buy some supplies we didnt have, kept the receipt, he was very honest about his costs and time. Proficient with his work and is very handy, easy to communicate with, nice guy. Will definitely work with him again!

The team at Catlett (Jeremy, Joe, Brittany) were great to work with. I hired Catlett to install the posts for a fence around 2 acres, figuring I could install the boards and the welded wire myself. Catlett was impressive right off the bat. They were going to have to start later due to a conflict with another client, but Catlett was flexible and worked with their other client to meet the time constraint I was faced with. This meant the world to me because they put my needs as a new customer as a priority. The Catlett team installed the posts over a two day time frame and during the second day I began installing the welded wire. Jeremy and Joe were more than willing to help with tips and tricks of the trade along with advice on what tools and techniques to utilize to create a better product. They were quick with advice, personal, and great to work with. If they hadn't I would have found myself in a quagmire with an uncompleted fence. There are a lot of nuances with fence building and I am glad I "Trusted the Professionals". They also build three beautiful gates. Catlett will be the first team I call for all future issues.

Sam did great quality work. He was very professional and responsive to my questions and concerns. His charges were reasonable as opposed to some other contractors I dealt with from thumbtack. He's a handyman and I will reach out to him for future renovation needs.

Months ago, I looked for someone to do a small painting project on Thumbtack. And I ended up with a brand new home. Christian, Jessica, Hector and the rest of the team at 5th Gen Group honestly do miracles. We own a 100+ year old row home in Washington DC and we've had problems ever since we moved in five years ago. After dealing with four different contractors that left me unsatisfied, I tried Thumbtack (at that time, new in the DC area). Christian came out to do an estimate and I was impressed by him from the get go - as a woman, I hate when contractors act like I'm stupid or uninformed. Christian never did that, and he answered all my questions respectfully and thoroughly and would defer to my wishes. We initially contracted for a gut remodel of our ancient kitchen and leaking bathroom. Christian's professional opinion was heavily appreciated as well as his vision - he instantly "got" the feel of a space and spent a lot of time listening to not only what we wanted, but how we would use the space and what we planned for the house in the future. Of course, the best laid plans always go awry - we knew our house had a few "handyman specials" but once Christian opened up the floor in the kitchen, we realized we were really in for it. Down there was a hidden mess of rotting wires, missing piping, garbage from the last renovations, and rotted-out beams. Overnight, our budget doubled. I personally wanted to die. But Christian calmly lead us through the process, helped us try to salvage our murdered budget, and focused on explaining the trade-off in home values. We ended up with an additional half bath downstairs (because really, what was another 5K at that point?), brand new kitchen (with a small bar!) a brand new stairwell and relocated laundry room, and a brand new bathroom with a shower (after 5 years of an ancient leaking cast iron tub). Christian isn't completely perfect - he's totally a perfectionist, and if you are one too, be prepared for some long conversations. There is an epic texting exchange over the bathroom tile that I may print out just to see how long it really was. But that's about the only thing. Also, for the other ladies on here- I always hate opening my home to someone because I have had bad experiences with contractors who were, at best, creepy. Christian and Hector were completely professional, and they really went the extra mile to make sure I always knew who would be in the house, when they would arrive, and how to reach both of them. Christian also has a lot of loyalty and integrity toward his clients - he is always fair, both in pricing and in the treatment of your home. He broke a small appliance - the only reason I knew was because he called me when he was purchasing an (upgraded) replacement on his own dime. All renovations are hard projects, long projects, and frequently frustrating. There was definitely a day when I wanted to kill Christian for sending me out to two different quarries in far out Virginia right around rush around. But when I stepped into my home for the first time, I couldn't stop smiling. And when we finally scrape together the budget for a third floor extension, I know exactly who I am calling.

Tony and his team were terrific. They mounted our TV exactly how we wanted it and completely hid the wires. They were extremely professional and even brought their own vacuum to make sure the place was clean before they left it. We had a couple other small requests around the house that they didn't hesitate to help with. We'll definitely be calling on them again for more help around the house!

My assumption is the average person doesn't know much about drywall repair. I say this because when you are quoted a price of a repair you will feel one way or the other about the quote. I would say that for what was paid I feel like I was "stealing" from Romberto based on the quality of work these guys completed. First of all the guys stated they would be on location at 7:30. They were here at 7:32. Based on where I live I will take that 10 times out of 10. Much better than a cable providers or appliance delivery that give you 2 - 4 hour windows and still show up late. They had their drop clothes and coverings to cover the furniture in the room. and they taped up all the surrounding areas to keep it clear and clean. The area of the repair was approximately 3' x 4' and than a separate fist sized hole. Entirely different types of repairs but these guys knocked it out with no problem. I will be hiring these guys again for any future jobs that I have. Thanks Romberto!!

Ricardo came to do several small repair projects in our home including hanging blinds, repairing a door, garage door work, hanging curtain rods, etc. He worked efficiently and was clean/organized. He came on time and was professional. He verified that we were satisfied with each job before moving to the next. Pricing was fair, he’s very responsive by phone and text, arrives on time and was very professional. He also seems to be skilled in many areas - plumbing, electric, painting/general contractor, and landscaping. He has given reasonable estimates for such work at my home and we plan on using him for more work which I’ll review once completed. It’s nice to have someone you can call for such a a wide variety of home needs.

My chimney cap came off and was damaged, bent, and misshapen. The cost to replace with a new one by the chimney co. was $300 for material only. Mr. Yellet basically rebuilt the cap by installing new wire screening, reshaping, and connecting all parts securely. The rebuilt is much better than the original and the labor and material cost a lot less than a new chimney cap (which didn't include labor).

I had Unique Homes (Simeon) complete 4 different projects for me, each progressively bigger. All of them were successful -- although not without little issues that came up now and then, but that were always taken care of. The prices were very good and the jobs were done well. Job #1 - I had a front porch that needed concrete work. This was a relatively small job, but it was done well. Job #2 - This was a remodel of small bathroom. Again, the job was done well and was a good price. And Simeon indulged us owners half-way through the project when we did not like something about the floor tiles we had chosen. Totally our issue, we did not really like how it looked when it started getting installed. But he undid some of his work and we were able to fix it. Job #3 - This was a full bathroom remodel, so a more significant job. Again, this project was done well, but the costs savings really started to come through on this project. We were very happy with the final look of the bathroom. Job #4 - This was by far the biggest job. It was a complete remodel of our master bathroom. I had received various quotes from other contractors in the $30-40K range for the project (including materials). Simeon's prices were less than a third of that, however that did not include any of the materials. In the end, I think the materials is the source of a lot of the savings since I think the others hide mark-ups (or store kick-backs) in the materials. For this project we went to some high end stores and looked at their display designs and chose/copied what we liked. We chosen something that was based on a white marble tile as a base ...and Lowes/HD carried it at a fraction of the cost of Tile City. I think we saved $5k on the marble along. We bought some of the more unique accent stuff in Tile City at full price, but for everything else we were able to replicate the Tile City look with HD or Lowe's materials of equal quality. We bought a high end shower panel, but bought it through Costco. The same fixture at a high-end bathroom store was thousands more than what we paid. At some higher end stores Simeon would give us the Unique Homes discount that he had negotiated. Some places (like the glass doors for the shower) were still expensive...but I ended up with the same bathroom that would have been $40k for about $20K. So yes, I recommend Unique Homes.

I could not have asked for better service or better results. I asked for the installation of new lighting/dimmer and ceiling speakers in my dining room and installation of a new home theater system with in-ceiling speakers in family room. The work included running audio/visual signal wiring through finished areas of home, adding circuits for lighting and equipment, relocating plumbing that was in the way, installation of new recessed lights and chandelier, and mounting and installation of the home theater display. Installing the required electrical power, lighting, speakers, and A/V signals required significant planning and work in finished areas of my home. In the end, the result was clean and showed care and attention to detail in both the design and implementation stages. All of the runs for power, speakers, Internet, and A/V signals work as I wanted. The installed lighting and dimmer has significantly improved visibility in my dining area. And despite the numerous cuts to the drywall that was needed during the project, one cannot tell today that the drywall had ever been cut open. In addition, I was treated professionally during the entire project and all the questions I had were answered promptly. I wholeheartedly recommend REO, and I plan to hire them again for future work at my home.

Contacted the business owner based on his business card information. He returned my call promptly and came over to give a free estimate on the work that I needed done. Specifically, I wanted to have built an addition to my already existing fireplace mantel, install a TV bracket and do some wiring. He gave me an estimate on labor and materials and how long it would take to complete. He rewired the cable, added an electrical outlet, rebuilt the framing behind the wall where the TV was going to hang for added support, built and hung the custom framing and crown molding seen in the picture. He also painted the new and old mantel, hung the TV and set it up all in under 16 hours of labor. Amazing!!! He was neat, efficient and didn't waste time or money on unnecessary materials or labor. I would recommend him to anyone in need of home improvements and carpentry projects.

Carlos did such a great job with our bathroom. Not only did he do our bathroom but he also gave us a great deal on doing some electrical wiring for a house to be able to have an extra router to boost our internet signal. He also did the backsplash in my kitchen which I've been dying to do since we bought the house. The work is so beautiful everything he did. He also helped me figure out that are kitchen faucets were no good I they didn't even charge me for that. He does quality work for a fair price and he walked you through each step making you feel comfortable about what you are getting into. After he demolished our bathroom right away told us at the plumbing is bad and he could just do the bathroom the way it is. He said that he would rather do a quality job and make sure we have a beautiful bathroom along with the plumbing underneath. I gave him the okay and paid the extra cost to have the plumbing redone. Totally worth it the bathrooms amazing. For a long time where kitchen faucets weren't working well and we would hear the same thing that everything is fine but we would only get like drip of water from our kitchen faucet. The previous contractor who did our kitchen basically gave us bad faucets and that's why we had issues in the kitchen. Carlos determine that right away and told us exactly what we needed to do. I would highly recommend using him for all kinds of work in your house. He's very knowledgeable and dependable

Home Pro recently finished our basement. After several other $80k-$100k quotes from other companies, Home Pro came in at a much more reasonable price. Beside the excellent workmanship, they were always willing to listen to my concerns or suggestions. They offered a great deal of recommendations based on their experience. We are extremely pleased with their work and will be using them again soon to remodel our kitchen!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.
