Robert is amazing!!! He kicks my butt and makes workouts fun at the same time. No two workouts are the same. I've been doing a small group class for three months and I do one-on-one boxing once in a while and I'm already in much better shape. And I look forward to my workouts every week. I definitely definitely recommend Robert if you're looking for a trainer! He's the best.

WORKING WITH BRANDON HAS BEEN MY BEST PERSONAL TRAINING EXPERIENCE: HE'S FRIENDLY, ACCOMMODATING, INNOVATIVE, AND MOTIVATING. I'VE HAD TRAINERS AT MULTIPLE GYMS AND LARGELY BECAME DISENFRANCHISED BY THE PROCESS BECAUSE EVERYBODY SEEMED TO USE ONE OF TWO MODELS: WORK ME UNTIL I DIE, OR COPY P90X. I CAN, AND HAVE, DONE BOTH ON MY OWN. THIS WAS NOT MY EXPERIENCE WITH BRANDON. FIRST OFF, HE ACTUALLY LISTENED WHEN I EXPLAINED TO HIM MY GOALS AND DESIRE TO DO DIFFERENT TYPES OF EXERCISES. FROM DAY 1 WE USED A COMBINATION OF WEIGHTS, RESISTANCE BANDS (WHICH I'VE NEVER DONE WITH ANOTHER TRAINER), PLYOMETRICS, COMBINATIONS, AND EVEN BOXING (YES, I SAID BOXING - ANOTHER FIRST). EVERY WEEK I COULD TELL HE PREPARED THE WORKOUTS SPECIFICALLY TO HIT CERTAIN MUSCLE GROUPS, IN A CERTAIN ORDER, AND IN DIFFERENT WAYS. HE WAS ALWAYS PREPARED AND NEVER JUST WINGING IT AS WE WENT ALONG. HE EVEN INITIATED A SATURDAY SESSION TO MIX UP OUR ROUTINE WITH SOME CITY RUNNING AND INTERSPERSED EXERCISES - IT WAS A GREAT IDEA FOR DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND STILL GETTING A GREAT WORKOUT. BRANDON ALSO MET ME AT MY HOME AND WAS EARLY FOR EACH SESSION. WE USED THE FULL AMOUNT OF TIME FOR TRAINING, NOT CUTTING IT SHORT TO RUN OFF TO ANOTHER CLIENT ON THE TOP-OF-THE-HOUR. I FELT LIKE MY TRAINING TIME WAS MINE AND BRANDON WAS 100% THERE. I HAD TO CHANGE OUR SCHEDULED MEETING TIME AND EVEN RESCHEDULE SEVERAL SESSIONS AFTER THAT, BUT BRANDON WAS VERY FLEXIBLE AND KIND ABOUT IT. I HAD EVEN INJURED MY KNEE (HELPING SOMEONE MOVE) AND BRANDON STAYED IN TOUCH BY OFFERING ME TIPS ON HOW TO CARE FOR IT AS WELL AS SIMPLY CHECKING IN TO SEE HOW I WAS DOING. BOTTOM LINE IS THAT BRANDON IS DEDICATED AND YOU CAN SEE THIS EASILY IN HOW HE TREATS YOU, YOUR TIME TOGETHER, AND YOUR WORKOUT.

When I first met Dimitri over a year ago, I had a long way to go on my fitness journey and was a little bit intimidated about starting a training program. During our first training session I nearly passed out because I was out of shape, and I wasn’t fueling my body the way I needed. Right away Dimitri made me feel reassured that I could, and would, get stronger and better if I put in the work. He took the time to help me set my goals, discuss my likes/dislikes, and from there, created a custom plan for me to reach my goals. The program he designed relies on high-intensity intervals, coupled with strength training and kickboxing. I had never tried kickboxing before, but now it has become my favorite part of our sessions! A few months into our training I injured my ankle and thought I would need to put training on pause. Because of Dimitri’s expert knowledge of kinesiology and his extreme attention to avoiding further injury, I was able to continue on a modified program and make steady progress towards my goals. Not only is Dimitri incredibly knowledgeable about fitness and nutrition, but also he is encouraging and supportive during every step of the way. He pushes me harder than I ever knew I could push myself, and thanks to him, I have been successful in my fitness journey and boosting my confidence. With his help, I’ve lost over 25 lbs, gained lean muscle and drastically improved my strength and flexibility!

Arris is an amazing personal trainer and the perfect motivator to get off video games and screens for our 15 year old son who has special needs. He is patient but still challenges Zach to improve each session. Zach looks forward to his twice weekly work outs with Arris and has shown great results in his strength and endurance training. Highly recommended for anyone as a personal trainer no matter if you are training for a sport or simply want to get into better shape!

I've been training with Nate several times a week for over 5 years, and I couldn't be more pleased with my progress, fitness level (strength, duration, flexibility), and the ongoing challenge and diversity of workouts -- they're never boring and incorporate strength, stability and core, time under tension, and functional training for every part of my body. In addition, Nate's a nice guy with a great sense of humor, so the workouts are tough but enjoyable. After his initial assessment, he continued to take the time to get know me individually and has a vested interest in my health, well being, strengths, and weaknesses (he enjoys identifying and having me work on my weaknesses!). Nate works hard with each of his clients and he customizes each workout for their individual needs and goals. In the 5+ years I've trained with him, Nate has never been late or missed a workout -- even in snowstorms! When I need to change a training appointment, Nate works very hard to find a time that is mutually beneficial. Finding the right personal trainer that had the proper knowledge, experience, equipment, interpersonal skills, and motivation to align with mine was tough; and I couldn't be happier to have found Nate. My investment in training with him has been more than worth it: I'm in great physical shape, my doctor asks if I've found the fountain of youth, and I've made a good friend in the process.

This is a great personal training gym with dedicated, motivated trainers! I trained with George Lazarov who kicked my butt into gear every time I wanted to give up. I am in my mid 40's and nowhere near a body builder, but just wanted to learn how to train with weights and get a little leaner. George taught me how to do things the right way and which supplements work best. No selling game here like other gyms - just training. They have beautiful equipment and the place is brand new and super clean! The personal attention, knowledge and professionalism of the trainers is everything you want when seeking a trainer. The owner Svet is super friendly and responsive to anything you need. They can even train you at home - Jose Martinez is the man for the in-home training! Can't say enough good things - you're going to have to try this place out! :)

I really enjoy my sessions with Niki and was impressed how much she incorporated my exercise preferences into the training. Although I already had a fairly good level of fitness, she helped me to iron out mistakes in my technique and identified a rather significant lack of flexibility which was holding me back in achieving my desired results. Most importantly, her calm and gentle approach made training with an expert of her caliber a lot of fun and not scary (like I expected) at all.

Nick is an awesome trainer! I've been working with him for a month so far on a 3-month, 1x/week plan. He's very responsive to messages and is open to text communications which is super convenient. Don't let his age fool you - he has great experience, particularly from his personal MMA training and career. He has been excellent in modifying exercises to meet my needs / accommodate my limitations and keeping me motivated. I've never sweat so much in my life - really feel like I'm getting great value for my money!

I've been an athlete my entire life, and as such, I am familiar with training from an array of backgrounds. I have never had training as successful and rewarding as the training I get here. The lessons you learn here will help you become stronger both physically and mentally, as you learn to push through barriers like never before. I can honestly say that I am the strongest (both physically and mentally) I have ever been.

I can’t say enough good things about Julian! We definitely hit the jackpot with him and in a very short time, he’s become a great trainer, mentor and role model for my 15 year old son who has wanted to increase his strength/stamina while working on his soccer skills. Julian very quickly responded to my search for a personal trainer and was incredibly professional during our introductory call. It was evident that his knowledge of /experience with soccer as a player and coach would be a good match for my son. He also shared his philosophy about strength training with kids, specifically how he seeks to understand what motivates and is important to them, so he could then weave in his expertise which ultimately would result in a truly customized program to help accomplish their goals. He was eager to “meet” my son and scheduled some time to speak with him personally over the phone and get to know him. I was impressed at how he was able to get from a 15-year old boy, what his fitness goals were! In less than a week of my initial inquiry, my son was training in the gym with Julian and has absolutely loved every session with him. Julian maximizes every second during each workout and even encourages kids to come in early to get warmed up (so really, while you pay for a 60-minute session, you get 70-75 minutes!) My son has already noticed physical changes, but beyond that, his sense of confidence, focus, and dedication has increased tremendously. Julian provides encouragement inside and outside the gym by keeping tabs on my son and checking in on how he’s doing. Even when my son tried out for another soccer team, Julian gave him sound advice throughout the process, acted as a sounding board, and alleviated any anxiety he had. The investment you make in Julian goes far beyond strength training; you also get someone who takes a genuine interest in your well-being and wants you to be successful. He empowers you with exercises which don’t require you to be in a gym (my son did his own workouts during the winter break) and with general “life skills/lessons”. Go for a free consultation with Julian ... you’ll be hooked!

I have been working with Ray for six months and have never felt fitter or stronger in my life. He is both patient and motivating, he's helped me perfect form on exercises I've always been too intimidated to try by myself. I've lost 2 pant sizes and hit strength goals I could never have achieved alone. I know that from warm up to strength training and cardio I am getting a great workout, learning new exercises, and pushing myself to new personal bests thanks to his guidance and coaching. -C. If you are looking for a GREAT trainer don't look any further! You've found her. When I initially met Ki she told me "I train many of my clients at HOME and bring the gym to YOU! I specialize in Tabata, HIIT, Yoga/Pilates, Boxing, Balance, Strength Training, Corrective Stretching, Breathing Cadence (just to name a few). My workouts are never boring. They are always fun and different!" She stood by EVERY word she stated. Her workouts were never boring and they were always different & fun. I always assumed you needed a full gym for a total body workout...not with Ki. She made magic happen every Tuesday & Thursday in a small space in my living room. If you have stairs in your home be ready they will become your frienemy! Thank you Ki for a great experience! I look forward to working with you again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.
