My job decided to put me in charge of catering our fall employee appreciation event. I wasn’t even sure where to start since I was not familiar with any caterers in the Montgomery County area. So I decided to go to the trusty internet to start my search. I came across thumbtack which is a great site by the way. You basically enter what you are looking for and like magic you start to receive quotes from different caterers in your area. Chef Kevin Reed was very prompt with his response and also included a sample menu with his quote which I thought was excellent. We conversed over email for a while and I was convinced this was the man for the job. I also was adamant about supporting a local small black business. The day of the event, He arrived on time along with his help. I told him what our theme would be and he nailed the set up perfectly. A beautiful fall theme was laid out in our employee lounge right before my eyes. The Chef and his staff were very personable and pleasant to work with. The food was hot, very good and healthy. My coworkers were very impressed with the food and service. I would definitely recommend his services. Hopefully we will be working together again soon on our company Holiday event. We have over 180 employees here and he was able to provide plenty of food and we had lots of leftovers. Kevin is top notch. Highly recommended.

The answer: you contact Esther Marandure, Executive Chef, of the Epicurean Nutrition Catering Company. On a whim, I decided to use Thumbtack to find a caterer for my mom's 72nd birthday party. OMG. I am SOOOO glad that I did!! I have planned a number of parties in my day, and I have yet to find one with such great professionalism and wonderful customer service I experienced with AC Catering. First off, they can fix just about anything!! While I had a basic menu in mind, I was forced to rethink things based on the wide variety of options presented by AC Catering. Other caterers wanted me to come up with the menu initially without giving me an idea of their speciality items. With AC Catering, you can get ANYTHING from breakfast, lunch, dinner..including smoked pit grilled items. So, I contacted them with my initial thoughts for a menu. Within 2 days, I received a proposal from the owner, George. Pricing was perfect, even with delivery. Additionally, they provide utensils, plates, condiments, etc. I was pleased. I had to make a last minute change. George was able to accommodate my request with no hassle. I called him just to make sure this change wouldn't pose a problem. He said "No worries. I got you." And, he wasn't kidding. So, party day comes. I'm a bit nervous because I never tasted the food or visited his brick and mortar store. However, the previous reviews from Thumbtack customers were all stellar. After meeting George in person, I totally understand why the reviews are so stellar. George is extremely pleasant and engaging. He arrived on time and was totally prepared to set up everything. He shared some jokes with my brother. Gave compliments to the birthday girl. He even shared the history about his family business. This party was for 50+ people. So, everything had to be right. Let me just say that George and his team didn't disappoint! The greens (with smoked turkey), baked beans and rice were EXCELLENT. I've eaten a lot of rice in my day. But, can I tell you how fabulous the yellow rice is? Very delicious. For meats, I ordered bbq chicken and burgers. Again, everything was wonderful. You would think burgers would just be bland and lacking flavor. NOT AC Catering burgers. They were thick, juicy, and seasoned well. More than enough food was provided. In fact, I had to encourage guests to take home plates of food. The deviled eggs were tasty. However, they were a bit messy due to lots of filling. But, it was totally fine. My guests put the smash on them. All throughout the event, everyone had positive comments and asked "who catered the food?" I didn't hesitate to tell them about George and AC Catering. I HIGHLY recommend them. In fact, I'm trying to find another excuse to celebrate so I can utilize them again!! Thank you, George, for making my mom's birthday so great. You will be hearing from me again. May your catering business continue to grow. God Bless you and your family.

Best value you could get in a wedding catering company! Quick basic info on my wedding since yours might be different: Late May wedding in Maryland, 7-hour reception with cocktail hour and dinner, approx. 100 guests, Manor, garden & tented reception setting, buffet dinner including a mix of food and drinks representing the cultures of the bride & groom (salvadoran, thai, new orleans, baltimore). Just two days after our wedding day I am feeling so good about the decision we made in booking Top of the City Catering. Maribel and her team were absolutely fantastic and we received soooo many compliments on our food, desserts, and cocktails, which were all provided by Top of the City. They had also done a great job of setting up décor for the guest tables, around the venue, and for the buffet and bar areas. In addition, the service throughout the day and night was phenomenal and we (bride & groom) always felt taken care of. For planning, we wanted a rustic, elegant feeling and they did a great job of presenting us ideas that were aligned with our vision. Top of the City Catering is a smaller catering business, but that does not make it any less in quality. When we were first looking into Top of the City I was a little leery because it was much more affordable and it usually is said, "You get what you pay for," but in this case that was NOT true at all. Maribel and her team are very responsive in communication, are very open and welcoming to your ideas and direction, and will always give suggestions from their expertise but still respect your wishes should you want something different. I really hope that Top of the City will gain momentum in growing its business and gaining the respect it deserves. Don't let the size of the company distract you from the amazing service, quality of food, flexibility, and affordable price you will get from Top of the City catering. Get a consultation with them and see for yourself!

Chef Giovanni is not only a creative and dynamic chef, he is also a warm person. I was so relieved to welcome Chef Giovanni at my house for my dinner party, he put me at ease with his calm demeanor and ideas. We had been exchanging emails and texts the week prior to the event, he was responsive unlike other chefs I had worked with in the past. Chef had also been tasked to provide a meal for a pescatarian, gluten-free guest, and a “no shell fish” guest. When Chef arrived, he took several inexpensive bouquets from Trader Joes and transformed them into stunning centerpieces for my dining room table. The entire dining room morphed into a chic bistro that looked like it should have been in the south of France as opposed to Maryland. Once the first guest arrived, the smell of bouillabaisse was permeating the house and the guests were excited by the aroma but also the drinks and amuse-boushe Chef had prepared for their arrival. The amuse-boushe was phyllo dough stuffed with spiced lamb. It was crunchy on the outside with flavors of raisins, spices and lamb on the inside. This was an exceptional way to start our culinary journey! Once the guests were seated and wine was poured, the appetizer was served. It was not my favorite combination of flavors but others seem to enjoy it. Next the main course, the bouillabaisse was served. I was stunned to see how beautiful the bouillabaisse was prepared; with cilantro and lime on top and was chocked full of lobster, crab, scallops, fish. My guests were asking him for the recipe for the rue and the steps to making such an intriguing meal. The dessert was also nicely done, my guests really enjoyed the presentation and the taste. Chef Giovanni talked about what he made, helped serve the guests. He also helped pour the wine and kept the night flowing. Chef Giovanni also left me with a spotless kitchen which was the perfect end to a perfect night. I am a customer very happy with a first-time experiment with inviting a chef into my home. I think it is a great way to entertain without breaking the bank. When you consider how much time and preparation that goes into an evening like this, I feel that Chef Giovanni provides quality ingredients and exceptional service for a reasonable rate.

I cannot recommend Sandra highly enough. She was such a pleasure to work with all through the process of planning a brunch to celebrate our children's baptism. She talked through the menu and the schedule with us well in advance and kept in touch as she pulled all the pieces together. Her food was beautiful and absolutely delicious. And, she was attentive to every detail. She brought tablecloths and accents to match the colors of our kids' outfits and arranged beautiful flower arrangements to help decorate the house. She was cheerful and clearly invested in making sure we had a beautiful event. We have found our event caterer and look forward to working with Sandra again in the future!

Chesapeake Food Works has provided catering services to me through my position as Executive Assistant to the Headmaster of an independent Baltimore boys' K-12 school, since Jan 2007, at least. I initially worked with the owner, Amy LeVie, until roughly Oct 2011, through Coburn's Restaurant, where she was the catering manager. I began working directly with Chesapeake Food Works around Nov 2011 when Amy purchased the catering business and have maintained a consistent working relationship since that time. I do a tremendous amount of events planning and CFW has provided me with everything from a simple wraps/salads/desserts/drinks luncheon for three people up to a full buffet event for 300 people and everything in between. CFW has provided breakfasts, lunches, dinners, morning or afternoon snacks, and refreshments, of an ever changing variety over the course of the years. At times, they may be on campus several times during any given week. They are professional and provide a consistently high quality product. I never have to worry that they will not show up or they will forget things for an event. When I request a quote for an event, I generally receive a response within an hour or two and rarely wait even 24 hours. I have recommended them to just about every other department within my organization and many now use CFW on a consistent basis. In addition, I have also recommended CFW to friends and family members. If you are looking for a caterer who is reasonable, conscientious, dependable, and consistently provides great service and really good food, I would highly recommend that you use Chesapeake Food Works.

We requested Tacos El Rey for catering our sons 1st communion. They were very professional, punctual, and did an excellent job in setting up our food. I would definitely have them cater again. The quality of favor in their food was superb. Our guest thought the fajita steak was outstanding, tender and flavorful.

Scott is fantastic and continually goes above and beyond. We planned our 25 person wedding weekend entirely from out of town, and couldn't have done it without Scott. From our first emails and Skype conversations, Scott made us feel heard and cared for -- something we definitely did not feel from the other four chefs we met with. He provided clear menu options and helped tailor the perfect selections, including accommodating our halal and vegetarian guests. Months later, our guests are still raving about the meal Scott prepared and entire experience he delivered. Beyond catering the evening, Scott and his team helped us evaluate the venue, find and acquire the linens & place settings, pick out & deliver flowers, and purchase food for the rest of the weekend. We highly recommend Scott as both a chef and as a trusted advisor with a big heart.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
