I moved from a studio to a bedroom in a house. This was a low cost and fairly smooth move. Movers were young and a bit inexperienced. They did not use shrink wrap or any protection on my furniture. They were, however, very hard working and willing to take direction. Nice people. The owner was responsive and kind. Would recommend to someone who does not have a ton of stuff and is looking for a cheap option.

I contracted with Mr. Welch for moving about 70 boxes to a small trailer. He helped me define the job more accurately and was responsive and fair with a really good price for the service. Though my plans changed for this opportunity, he was gracious and I will most certainly use this company again.

We had a 3 man team and you could tell they are all professionals. They worked quickly with out scratching my walls or damaging my furniture. They also used hardwood floor runners and carpet protection to ensure our floors stay in a like new state. To my surprise the job was done in under the estimated time for completion which is always good when tring to save money. A-1 Movers has my recommendation as a quailty moving service.

Amine was always available via phone and answered all my questions before the move, very helpful! He told us that he would provide wardrobe boxes, so we should not pack our hanging clothes. However, the wardrobe boxes were forgotten and we were left in a bit of a lurch on moving day. He gave us a $25.00 discount, but I was disappointed more couldn't be done to remedy the situation. Hiring movers isn't cheap, and $25.00 seemed insignificant compared to the inconvenience. The two-man crew was nice, and good at moving things relatively quickly. They were playing music during the move that contained a lot of expletives and other questionable lyrics, which seemed very unprofessional. They did not cover our mattresses so the sheets I left on to protect them got covered in grease and dirt from the truck. Despite the crude music and lack of mattress protection, they worked very hard and got us moved in under six hours (two BR apartment). They went over the initial time estimate, which was frustrating because I provided a very detailed list of furniture and boxes. We ended up having way fewer boxes than the estimate I sent, so I thought surely they would stay within the time frame. Overall - good value for the money, but next time I might go with movers that cost a little more for added protection of my mattresses and wardrobe boxes.

I have never heard of NK Movers... but I thought this company was great! Although the two movers did not speak English, they were nice and quick. I was impressed with the amount of furniture they were able to get out at one time. We finished within the three hour time frame. I was also impressed with the cost to move. It was not as expensive as I was quoted by other movers. They were reasonable and did an awesome job! I would definitely recommend them.

Adrian and his team mate Brad were excellent with their service. They moved my 1 bed room apartment to a town home in the space of 3 hours. Brad was able to hold a 8 foot sofa all by himself as both of them moved it through the gallery of our apartment on the 2nd floor. They were really fast with their moving and I would definitely recommend them to anyone. Very punctual and excellent with communication :)

We found Great Nation on Thumbtack, and Rose was our moving consultant and she facilitated a long distance move with a complete package for us. She was extremely communicative, efficient, respectful and affordable. The moving team arrived early, thoroughly wrapped all of our items and furniture and delivered them on time to our new house in a different state. Everyone was incredibly nice throughout the whole process and extremely hard working. We would use him again in a heartbeat and have already recommended Rose, and Great Nation to multiple friends looking to move in the DC area. Seriously could not have made the moving experience more low stress. Thank you so much, Kevin & Family

Our two helpers were great for moving our large items upstairs. They were quick, made a good team, and were very friendly. My only issue was that they weren’t as familiar with putting the furniture back together, and my husband had to do most of the work on that front. Would definitely hire again!

I had an excellent experience when it came to both the coordination and execution of my long distance move with M&M Moving and Hauling. They were the first company to provide me with a quote, and were able to complete the job for a very reasonable price. My father, who oversaw the pickup location side of the move, even commented on how efficient they were at loading everything. Even if you are moving into a walk-up with narrow stairwells, no need to fear— Marvin and his assistant dealt with it spectacularly. I wouldn’t hesitate to hire them again.

Like most people when it gets to be the end of a move-out month, things get stressful and worries mount about being able to get "all that furniture" moved in time. I was under such stress for the past two weeks...UNTIL TODAY when Po's Moving pulled up. It was not just a godd experience, it was phenomenal! I was simply aamzed at how safely, securely, and most importantly QUICKLY they emptied out my seemingly insurmountable amount of apartment furnishings and transproted them to their destination. Seriously, I don't rave about service these days as usually there's nothing to rave about. Po and his crew however? Well and truly OUTSTANDING. Great personalities (singing while they worked LOL), obviously skilled at their trade, well dressed in uniforms, etc. An absolutely perfect moving experience. Now having said all that, I want to STRESS the thing we all stress the MOST about if we are here seeking movers...the ridiculously high costs. I had no less than 11 movers answer my calls for aid here and Po's beat them HARSHLY on price! I still can't believe it was as cheap as it was for all the work they did and the traveling to my location and all. YOU WILL NOT GET A BETTER PRICE FROM ANYONE on here...in some cases, Po's was over $250 LESS than other quote on here. So please, if you are intensely stressed about your move, and you have a deadline lease-wise, USE PO'S MOVING! I am sitting here writing this with such a sense of relief that they somehow did SO MUCH in such little time! WAY TO GO PO'S A+++++ and 6 STARS if I could!

Cliff and his partner at CS Moving are easy to work with, prompt and very respectful of the environment they work in, both where i picked up my furniture, and when i dropped it off at my house. It was one of the best moving experiences i have had. So glad i chose them over moving my furniture with family and friends! I would recommend them to anyone planning s move. Neat, clean, prompt and friendly. You won't be disappointed.

These guys are the best. Real pros, listened to my requirements, punctual, inexpensive but not cheap and most importantly they get the job done. Please hire them, you will not regret it! I can’t stress enough how good they are. As I never have cash it would have been more convenient for me to pay using Venmo for example (just saw another comment on this), but on the other hand I totally understand it: cash is easy and straightforward.

On a 1-10 scale with 10 a perfect score, Ground Force One Moving is an 11! Richard and his partner were professional, courteous, punctual, and performed flawlessly. They were hired to pick up and return a 350 lb. elliptical machine to a store. They protected the floor with blankets, carefully avoided hitting doorways, and placed it where the store manager requested. With confidence, I highly recommend this family owned and operated moving business for all your moving needs, small or large.

The guys worked very hard and quickly to move a full 4 story townhouse in 6 hours. The only reason I did not give them 5 stars is because they were an hour late and also totally broke a piece of my furniture (granted it was relatively cheap) and just quietly cleaned removed it and took it with them without addressing it with me. I didn't care that much about the piece of furniture so I let it go being enhausted after the move. Overall however they did a good job and were quick and efficient

Mike and his team were fantastic! They were about 30 minutes early, which worked out well since I severely underestimated the amount of stuff we had. Upon arrival, Mike and I did a walkthrough of the house so we could go over what was and wasn't moving. Once we were finished and before they started, Mike provided a contract for me to sign. He reviewed it with me, went over the base charge, and how they handle charging for additional time; they actually charge overages to the half hour instead of full hour. They handled all of our furniture with care. And made sure to tell us of anything that was broken (we had a few pieces we knew were broken) or may not handle the move (cheaper pieces made of particleboard). Double checked with me to make sure whether or not certain pieces were moving. Once all the big pieces were in the truck, they told us they had more room and gladly moved more for me, including the kids bikes and toys (they pulled from under the bushes). We had so much stuff, they even offered to do another trip for us. Once we got to the new place, they were wonderful about taking things to the different rooms and levels of the house. They even put up with my scatterbrain, and moved a couple pieces more than once. All in all, it was a great experience and they have earned a repeat customer for sure!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
