Excellent working with Cesar to paint interior and exterior of house that's going on the market soon. In addition to painting he was able to take on other projects that I needed done. He cleaned and painted deck and also tiled powder room floor. All completed within one week. I will use him for future projects!

Excellent service, excellent work, excellent people! I had bedroom furniture that I tried to refinish myself and made a mess of. John refinished the furniture and it looks even better than when we bought it. They finished weeks earlier than they told us and we were thrilled! I highly recommend John Mark Power Antiques Restoration.

Walter showed up on time, got the job done quickly and correctly, and didn't leave a mess behind like some plumbers I've dealt with in the past. Not only would I recommend him for a future job, I've already taken my own advice -- he's also a general contractor, and I'm already using him for an exterior house repair this weekend.

Rob is excellent. I set up a project for Handyman as we moved into a new house to install over 25 curtain rods and he actually came that night, after fitting me in that day. He was there late and came back the next day to finish (which he surely did not need to come that night, but, I was very happy he did). He will definitely be our Handyman. I will be hiring him to install outside lights, TV brackets, etc.

Dave did a great job on some small painting projects (window frames, door, etc.), on our house. He was friendly and not pushy, and understood the particular requirements of our HOA. Reasonable price. I'll definitely use him again for all jobs around our house and can recommend him for your house projects.

Al Barney is my hero. He has been a part of our lives for 15 years here in Leesburg. He is my "GO TO GUY". I come up with an idea and I call Al. He makes it happen. In my last home he created an amazing outdoor space with a screened in porch and deck, flowing to an amazing patio. Years later he created a front porch that made my house unique to others in the neighborhood. Now, I have an older home that needed updating. He gave me an amazing kitchen with an island and cabinets that are breathtaking. Please come see my kitchen. I am proud to say that Al Barney is my friend, my designer, my builder and my mentor. Next stop....my master bathroom.

After a winter weather delay, once the builders started the fence was built in a matter of days. The builders paid attention to the small details as well as our overall design. They provided suggestions when necessary, and did exactly what they said they would do. Reliable, friendly, and efficient, and the fence looks great!

After we moved into our newly renovated home, we found out we had a HUGE leak in our basement. The leak was causing mold on the entire basement and dry walls. Our contractor hired someone to do the waterproofing during the renovation however we quickly realized we had to call a professional. We found MJ HOMES SERVICES & FLOOD RESTORATION on the internet. We called about 5 different companies and had MJ HOME SERVICES be the only ones that showed up on time (the same day we called). Their quote was affordable than the other quotes however it was worth every dime. MJ HOMES employees were extremely knowledgeable. They immediately found the issue and started working within 2 days. The work was both internal and external. Workers showed up at 8am and left at 7pm. They were quiet and worked clean. In addition, they had to dig in our basement and replace drywall. We didn't even feel we had construction in the house. The basement is dry and we are extremely happy.

This is the second time we've hired Saul, and he did great work for us again. He installed a set of kitchen cabinets for us in just two days. They look perfect and Saul's fees are very affordable. I'd definitely recommend him to anyone.

I was referred to Thumbtack by a co-worker after describing I had purchased the tile materials to re-tile a stand-up shower and a shower/tub combo. Matt was one of 5 contractors who responded within hours after my post and I was impressed with his credentials, pictures of jobs completed, and reviews. He met with me within 48, and we realized he had completed the tile floor work in my house for the previous owners nearly 5 years ago! The tile floor was a big selling feature for me back then and I was pleased when Matt could do the work I requested, for a very reasonable price, and he was able to start within a few days. Matt is prompt, meticulous, courteous, and was patient to answer my questions, and to do the work well and not rush to just finish

I hired Stewart from Custom Wallcoverings to help me with painting, wallpapering, and some general handyman services at my apartment, and he did an amazing job! Stewart offered me a free consultation and quote on his services, and gave me some very good tips in the process. I then hired him to paint my living room wall and ceiling as well as wallpaper my bedroom and bathroom - these were not easy jobs as the walls weren't in great shape, but Stewart made it all happen quickly and the results turned out even better than I had hoped for. I am very happy with his work and will definitely not hesitate to hire him again in the future for any needs big or small!

Gios builders was very professional in their remodeling of my bathroom. Kitchen and basement, I needed a larger bathroom but wasn't sure of my options. I was offered several options and was able to select the one that would best fit my needs. They were clean, fast, and timely throughout the entire renovation. It was a very pleasant experience and I'm thoroughly satisfied with the job I received. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Bruce was great from the beginning. He scheduled an appointment with me very fast, helped me decide what type of fence was best for my house, and provided me a very affordable quote. His team showed up in the freezing cold and worked all day. I was very impressed. I'm so glad I hired him. The fence was engineered perfectly. They did everything by hand and all the parts were of high quality. I highly recommend Bruce to anyone. Thanks, Bruce!

I received a few hits on the home inspection for a house I was selling. The bathtub diverter was leaking and it was discovered the pipe behind the wall was leaking and the garbage disposal needed repair. I contacted Robert, he provided me a quote and completed the job in a timely manner. The job was done so well - you couldn't tell he was even in the house! In addition, he actually hung a coat hanger in the hall closet - not part of his job but he did it anyway because I needed it. With professionals like this - it reflects highly on RJA Floors and Thumbtack as a service to connect us.

After interviewing several builders, my wife and I selected Winthorpe Design & Build based on previous projects. Scott and his staff were attentive during the pre-construction phase, the building phase and remain so many months after the project was completed. Krag (Designer/Estimator was very close to being on budget (after several changes we had made) and in the end Winthorpe’s craftsmanship exceeded our expectations. We have received numerous complements about our home and are happy when people drop by and ask "who built your home?". I would hire his firm again but that won't be necessary, my wife & I are living in our dream house with the security that it was well designed and built. We had a few questions after moving in and Krag came out to walk through (again) to explain how some of the high tech items we wanted worked (media room, security system and the whole house stereo, lights and window shades (all wireless and that are controlled by our tablets & phones ).

We originally hired Robert and his team to do pressure washing, which led to quiet a few other projects. Needless to say, this crew and company are the only people you need for Home Improvement projects. I had them power wash, paint the interior and exterior of my home, build an office in my basement and do a deck at my mothers house. I'll be using them for more projects once my Income Tax Check comes!

In planning our move from Northern Virginia to our home in Florida, My wife and I faced a potentially costly issue with having to replace our dining room table and buffet set, because the 104" long table would not fit into the considerably smaller dining room in our new home in Florida. Although we really did not want to replace the set, we had already conceded that we would have to run a local Craigslist ad, and hopefully be able to find a buyer who would offer us pennies on a dollar for the set, or have to give it away for free before the movers show up in 30 days. My wife was already looking at $5,000 replacement sets. Ouch! Running out of time, I thought if I could find a skilled woodworking craftsman that would take on a small but challenging project such cutting down a table top by about 20", we may be able to make the dining set work in the new home. Through Thumbtack, I described the project, received a list of potential woodworkers, and solicited to a half dozen furniture builders for the project. I received a response from only one individual, Gerry Hurley of Max Min Design. I read the reviews of Gerry's work, and impressed by the photos of his past projects, we hired Gerry. Gerry's price to do the project was very reasonable, and in addition, he said that he would be able to complete the job in ample time before the movers show up. Gerry got right on it. He came to the house with the right tools and was able to do a fantastic job; cutting down the table top, making the necessary modifications to the under supports, shortening the finished side rails, and stained and finished the end cut surface to perfectly match the rest of the table. Gerry even used scrap from wood removed to make a number of matching wood plugs to cover all the new screw holes in the shortened side rails, to look exactly like the original construction. To look at the table now, it is impossible to detect that the table had ever been modified. In addition, Gerry also stained and finished the 20" section that was removed so that I can possibly use later for a nice sized matching coffee table. All I need to do is add the four legs. Gerry, I welcome you and your good ethical nature to this USA. The end product and the professionalism you show in your work clearly portrays the pride you take in your skill and craftsmanship. A great job Gerry! Thank you!

We used Pardo Design to paint our whole house and to do random handyman work (put up shelving, install ceiling fan, etc). They were very reasonable and listened to how we wanted things done. Will definitely use them again!

Where do I even begin to say how amazing Rob is. As new home owners of an older house we have found ourselves in a bit of a few messes that we thought were "easy" but clearly weren't. Rob has been out to our house three times. The first time was to replace a lamp post in front of our house that was rotted and just a disaster. He was quick with a quote and to replace the lamp that was HOA approved. The second time was for a new storm door. It was 20 years old and my husband and I were quick to call Rob for help because well, we had no clue what we were doing. It took Rob a bit to get it out because of the age but he was quiet, clean and did zero damage to house. The price agreeed upon in advance and again, fair to both parties. Rob also helped us with a head scratching install of a motion sensor. To him it was an easy fix and showed up fast. He is reliable, nice, fast, clean and reasonably priced. When I see my husband about to start another project I am quick to ask if we should "just call Rob". I am confident he will be our go to guy for years to come.

Mike and his partner, Don, were great. Mike did some extra reinforcement framing around the dog door they installed just to make sure it was solid. Don has a background in outdoor landscaping and identified and fixed a broken hose on my fish pond when I mentioned something was not working right, even though that wasn't part of the original scope of work for the day. These guys are flexible, friendly, and really good at what they do. Which appears to be just about everything!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
