Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.

Reviews for dance instructors

Daniel Lee Tran was a phenomenal instructor! My girlfriend and I had a great time learning to swing dance from him. He taught us a lot, made us feel very comfortable even though it was our first ever dance lesson, and ensured that we had a GREAT time. I am definitely going back for more lessons and would highly recommend to friends and family.

Our first dance at our wedding was one of the highlights of our wedding and people are still talking about it! Dan is super patient and works well with beginners. He's very encouraging. We had to ask him to challenge us a little more and give us more critique, but we we were very happy with the dance we left with after just 6 lessons (and no previous experience!).

Dan reached out to me and offered wedding dance private lessons. He had a very thoughtful list of questions asking beforehand in better preparing himself for the first lesson (which is awesomely free!!). I decided on him since he left me with great impression of customizing to my need & being extremely accommodating. I had fun taking lessons with him. Dan is very patient (and an amazing dancer) to students, and gives very clear instruction especially considering I am just a beginner. I feel comfortable having him as my teacher and will consider hiring him again for future ballroom private lessons! Highly recommended if you are looking for an instructor who can tailor to what you need & offer great instructions!
