Planning ahead

Things to know before you get started.
6 Steps to Hiring a Door Installer
  1. 1. Ensure aesthetics and proper use

When a door does not work properly, it can turn into a huge source of frustration as well as a safety issue. You want to be sure the door suits the decor and works properly.

  2. 2. Choose the right material

Discuss the advantages of different door types, like wood, fiberglass, steel or aluminum with the door installer. Things to consider include swelling from humidity and how easy it is to repair.

  3. 3. Prioritize illumination and security

Discuss the amount of light you want to enter the room through a window in the door versus the amount of security and privacy lost by window placement.

  4. 4. Get a proper fit

If you are buying the door yourself but having a contractor install it, confirm the dimensions of the new door with the installer to make sure you get a door that fits in the door jamb properly.

  5. 5. Include handles and locks

This should be covered in your itemized estimate, but if it is not, be sure to ask. If it is not covered, the contractor could simply hang the door from its hinges and leave that task for you.

  6. 6. Agree on the finished product

Make sure you know if the contractor is painting or staining the door after it is installed. This final step impacts the appearance of the home and your level of satisfaction with the door.
