Al C. says, "From the first meeting I felt that this was going to be a great experience. Will arrived on time and asked what I needed done. I explained that my wife wanted a fan in the Living room and my preference was one in the Family Room. Will looked at both locations and asked to get to the attic. He said there was enough clearance for installation in either room. Will then gave me a quote for just on room and a discount for the other room (Explained the discount was possible because he would already be in the attic). Discussed the estimate with my wife and she agreed that the cost was very reasonable. I called Will and set an appointment for the Install. Will had explained for the rooms we should purchase fans that were no larger than 44in. Will showed up for the install and went over where the fans should be installed. Will and his team went to work and 3 hours later everything was complete. Wil explained how each fan worked and where the switches were installed. The work area was cleaned up and he left his contact information."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Yes, you can install a bathroom exhaust fan yourself if you have the skills and tools for the job. But because the job involves electrical wiring and ductwork, many people hire a pro who handles bathroom fixture installation to ensure it's done safely and correctly.

Here are a few reasons why you might want to hire a pro for this project:

  • They handle the electrical wiring safely, which prevents fire hazards and ensures the installation is up to code.

  • A pro will correctly vent the fan to the exterior of your home, which is crucial for preventing mold and moisture damage in your attic or wall cavities.

  • They can determine the correct fan size (CFM rating) for your bathroom's square footage, ensuring it's powerful enough to do its job effectively.

  • Pros have the right tools and expertise for cutting into your ceiling or wall and properly sealing the unit to prevent air leaks.

  • They ensure the entire project complies with local building codes, which can save you from headaches during a future home sale.

Yes, you’ll likely need an electrician. Installing a bathroom fan involves electrical wiring, and an electrician can help ensure the installation is safe and up to code. While some handymen offer bathroom fixture installation, an electrician is often your safest bet for this specific job.

Yes, bathroom exhaust fans should generally be vented to the outside. Venting into an attic or wall cavity can cause mold and wood rot. A professional handling your bathroom fixture installation can help ensure it meets building codes and protects your home from moisture damage.

There are several factors that might impact the cost of this project, including:

  • Replacement vs. new installation. Swapping out an old fan for a similar model is usually straightforward. A brand-new installation is more complex because it’ll likely require new wiring and ductwork.

  • Fan type and features. A basic exhaust-only fan will cost less than a model that includes a heater, light, or humidity sensor.

  • Ductwork requirements. The cost can increase if new ducts need to be installed or existing ones have to be rerouted. Venting through a roof is also typically more involved than venting through a side wall.

  • Electrical work. If your bathroom doesn't have the proper wiring in place, an electrician may need to run a new circuit, which adds to the project's cost.

  • Labor and accessibility. A fan in a hard-to-reach spot can take more time to install. You might get a better rate if you bundle the job with other tasks, like a full bathroom fixture installation.

Typically, it will take two to six hours for a professional to install an exhaust fan in your bathroom, but a few factors may impact how long it takes. For example:

  • Replacement vs. new installation: Swapping out an old fan is much faster than a brand-new installation that requires cutting drywall and running new ductwork.

  • Accessibility: A professional will work faster if the installation area in your ceiling or attic is easy to access.

  • Ductwork requirements: Running new ventilation ducts to the exterior of your home can be a complex task that requires extra time.

  • Electrical work: The job will take longer if your pro needs to run a new electrical circuit for the fan.

  • Ceiling obstructions: Unexpected pipes, joists, or other structural elements can complicate the installation and extend the timeline.

Remember: The timeline for your project will vary depending on many factors. Always ask your pro to provide an estimate.
