All 40 dinner guests truly enjoyed Giovanni's culinary creations - each dish was perfection! And it could not have been easier for me as a host - Giovanni and his colleague Geoffrey took care of everything, cooking, plating, serving and cleaning up! I will definitely do this again!

I Was looking for something different for my wife and her sister during a visit. I saw A Private Affair on Living Social, offering a cooking class for 5. Since my wife loves to cook and her sister spent some time in culinary school I thought 'lets just give it a go." We ended up with 3 1/2 people making what turned out to be a fantastic meal - each of them taking responsibility for preparing a course under Chef Jackie's guidance and watchful eye. My grand niece made the salad (and Chef Jackie was great in keeping her on task and engaged); My wife did the potatoes au gratin; another friend did the pork chops and my sister-in-law made the chocolate moose. It was a lot of fun watching them but not as much as they seemed to be having. The menu options were great, the food was different and unique and everybody learned something new. Most importantly my stock went up for being the guy who gave his girl a cool and different gift. Pay attention gents! This one was worth it!

I arranged a private cooking class at my home for several of my friends as a Christmas gift. The event was a great success! Learned how to make pasta and other tips about cooking. Our event was last night 1/9/16. I would highly recommend Stephanie and would use her again for other events. Isabel

I thoroughly enjoyed my coooking class with Manjiri! She was fantastic at explaining and also demonstrating the cooking techniques. The recipes were easy to follow and I was able to recreate them at home easily. Best part was that the food was delicious!! My daughter and I love the flavors of Indian food and Manjiri's dishes were comparable to food cooked at a high quality restaurant. I highly recommend her cooking class, you will love her!!

Kristin's cooking classes are fantastic. She uses fresh, delicious ingredients in all of her meals and the meals are easy enough to do on a weeknight. My favorite thing about the classes (since I am not a cook) is that the recipes are very easy to follow. She doesn't use a million ingredients but the outcome is restaurant quality meals. The cooking classes are interactive so you really learn how to cook the meals first hand. I would highly recommend any cooking class with Kristin.

Chef Ed is an absolute culinary wizard. I've been to a number of small events which he catered/cooked for and every time I was simply amazed by the sublime food. I've actually asked him to cater my upcoming wedding because of my previous experiences and am hoping my guests are just as blown away as I have been in the past.

FOODWAYS AND FOLKTALES by Vera Oye’ Yaa Anna In January 2008, Vera Oye’ Yaa Anna, presented a program for the African Section of the African and Middle Eastern Division of the Library of Congress entitled “Foodways and Folklore.” As a culinary Griot, Ms. Yaa Anna prepared a buffet meal of Garlic Collard Greens, Couscous, Jerk Turkey, Spinach and Cilantro and fried plantains, with Auntie Oye’ Pettit Rice Bread Muffins for dessert and a beverage of Alkaline tea, made with ph balanced water. The program was open to the public, and as it was held on a Saturday, many families came. Understandably, there were no left overs. The carefully and tastefully presented food was served alongside folktales and history about how these foods came to be, and the interconnection between Liberia, the native land of Yaa Anna, and the United States. She told the history of how freed slaves came back to Liberia with some influence of the times they spent in the United States. Later in the program, Yaa Anna told humorous, moral tales in the fashion of the Palaver Hut, a Liberian tradition where people hold discussions and tell stories. The three-hour program, which included time to eat the delicious food, time to hear the history of the food and time to hear amusing stories with some sage information embedded in them. Yaa Anna’s engaging story-telling, healthy and lovingly prepared gourmet dishes made for a fun and educational Saturday for the two dozen visitors, who then asked “when are you going to do this again?” We here at the Library of Congress would gladly extend the invitation again for this excellent program.

I had Chef Danielle come into my home for a cooking lesson/dinner party for my husband's 40th birthday party. She arrived on time 1/2 hour before the class would start to set up and was there for about 4 hours. It was really easy working the menu and I was happy with the menu options she presented me and the ability to make more then one entre to satisfy the tastes of all the members of the group (8 adults). We all had a blast from those that cook on the regular, to those of us (me) that don't ever cook. I was expecting my kitchen to look like a total disaster after having had 8 adults cooking in my kitchen, but she cleaned up everything! The food was fantastic and I had left overs that we enjoyed days later. Thanks for a great time Chef Danielle!

First and Foremost!! Our Taste Buds said "WOW" with each course. Recently, I became a new Dad and being that this was my first Mother's Day gift to my Wife, I decided to take a unique approach. An approach to surprise my wife by bringing a Personal Chef into our home. I googled the internet and came across Thumbtack.com which graciously led me to several Personal Chefs. As I waded through the listings of Chefs and solicited several price quotes, Gourmet Chef Amer's responded in a timely manner. After a brief discussion and viewing Gourmet Chef Amer's website, I was sold. Eureka...I found my Personal Chef of choice. The price point for services are respectful and having a website that depicts an array of menus dishes with thoughtful and detailed descriptions is informative to potential patrons. Chef Amer was very well prepared and efficiently blended his cooking style to the logistics of my kitchen and dining room layout. Overall, the Customer Service was Great; the aroma and food was deliciously rewarding to our palates; did I say the Customer Service was GREAT; and most importantly, the Mother's Day surprise was a SUCCESS!

I'll give you as fair and honest of a review as I can, but you should know I am Meetal's husband! Although I am biased, I cannot praise enough the cooking and teaching that Meetal is capable of. We have 2 young daughters, and the four or us are fed primarily by Meetal's fresh, healthy, tasty, and unique cooking. What amazes me most is how quickly she is able to do what she does. Like most families, we have a busy household with little time for grocery shopping, cooking, and cleaning. Meetal has turned cooking for our family into an efficient art, something we share together and make time for because everyone loves it. If you have a family and want to eat healthy and delicious food at home that you create with your family, Meetal is the person to teach you. Meetal has a lot of experience with more complex cuisines and dishes as well. Her Indian food is highly sought after and she's taught many friends and adults how to approach cooking this cuisine. Daal, Indian spiced turkey meatballs, and other unique Indian dishes could be on your table soon. Meetal has been teaching kids and adults for a while. Expect a fun, lighthearted, and sometimes fast paced approach to cooking. Best of luck in your cooking adventures. I hope Meetal can help you along the way.

Chef Matt is absolutely amazing! I have been using his personal chef services and I can honestly say that he has been a blessing in our life. I first learned about Chef Matt on an online community of moms in Old Town, Alexandria. Because I had a small baby and no time to cook, I decided to order our Thanksgiving meal from him. I was so happy I did – the food was absolutely fantastic and everyone at the dinner table raved about it. In fact, it was the best Thanksgiving meal that I have ever had. Since then I have been ordering from him on a regular basis. Chef Matt’s food is fresh, healthy and out-of-this-world delicious. His recipes are very diverse and incorporate a lot of international influences, which I love. Everyone in my home is so excited when we get the food from Chef Matt. I wish I knew about him long time ago, especially after we had our baby and struggled with finding the time to cook. I know that he teaches cooking classes and I hope that one day I will have the opportunity to learn how to cook amazing food directly from Chef Matt. I wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone looking for personal chef services!

Cooking with Donelle

Donelle’s recipe for success in the kitchen is perfect: a deep knowledge of the science of cooking and baking that gives her the ability to be adaptable, a thorough understanding of the tools and gadgets of the trade so she can keep up with multiple steps of multiple recipes simultaneously, and a level of confidence that keeps her calm and in control from start to finish. The end result is home-cooked meals that seem like they came out of a high-end restaurant. My most recent experience with Donelle was when I hired her for a baking class at my home with myself and my team from work. Within just three hours, she taught us how to make three desserts. It was clear that Donelle had experience as a teacher, as she balanced her “lecture” with questions to the group that were fun and engaging, as well as stories about her experiences in the kitchen that helped us get to know her. We ended the afternoon full, more connected to each other (it is true that cooking classes are an opportunity for bonding!) and excited to try the recipes on our own – all thanks to Donelle’s great teaching methods and familiarity with all-things-food.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.
