Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a lawn service?

Hiring a lawn care professional can save you time and money on your lawn. Professionals know exactly which products to use to solve your lawn’s issues, such as removing crabgrass or controlling pests. Many lawn care companies are results-oriented, meaning that they come with a guarantee to provide results.

If you’re DIY-ing it, you may save some money on costs. But you also might spend lots of money at the store that goes straight down the drain.

Is it worth it to hire a professional to mow your lawn?

Although hiring a lawn care company is more expensive than doing it yourself, it can be well worth the money. For starters, it saves you time and equipment maintenance, which may be justifiable financially. It also creates a more professional appearance. Plus, a pro can spot problems before they occur. This can save you money on expensive reseeding, aeration and other types of lawn repair down the road.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a landscaper or lawn care professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation call with a lawn care professional or landscaper during the COVID-19 pandemic, take advantage of digital technologies to avoid face-to-face exposure. When searching for lawn mowing, landscaping and lawn care companies online, ask if they’ll do a video call to assess the job and give you an estimate. You can also go over strategies for completing the job and conducting virtual payments to stay safe.

How often should you cut your grass?

In general, weekly mowing is the golden rule. However, different lawns and conditions may require different mowing frequencies. For instance, if your grass is growing slowly due to dry conditions or a lack of sun, don’t cut it simply because a week has passed. And don’t cut more than a third of the length of the grass blade at any time. Also, ease up on mowing if the weather is going to be hot and dry, as the longer blades provide shade and can keep water from evaporating so quickly.

If you're unable to mow your lawn, consider hiring one of the best lawn care professionals near you.

They rescheduled three different times with me and then by the fourth time they canceled my service saying they could not find anyone. So, they could help by keeping their appointments and actually find someone to do the service before they schedule it. My service was never actually done and I will never use or recommend this company to anyone looking for lawn care.

I am thoroughly impressed by Ai Property. Alex and Isaac were very responsive, courteous and professional. They quoted my property via the pictures I provided and went ABOVE and BEYOND what they initially promised. I am a happy camper and would recommend Ai Property to anyone who is looking for lawn care/maintenance.

I am very pleased with the services received, my yard looks great! The initial estimate was reasonable compared to other’s and they stuck to it once they arrived. Ben was very professional, knowledgeable and even gave me some pointers on lawn care and maintenance. They were very thorough and took their time making sure the job was completed. Not a single leaf was left behind 😊 Thank You Land Labor !

LandLabor was a lifesaver. I had 3 landscaping companies come out give me an estimate, setup a date and time to do the job and never show. Basically, they all wasted my time. Well today I said I'm giving someone one last chance (because I didn't want my husband to have to do it on his only day off). I wanted my bushes removed, a tree straightened and basic lawn care. When I say they did an awesome job. I really mean it. Not only did he come last minute but he will be doing my lawn on a monthly rotation. Thank you for relieving my stress.

Gilberto and his wife are some amazing hard workers. I had hired them to clean up a neglected front and backyard for a photoshoot to sell the house I'm staying in. When I drove up to my neighborhood after work I almost missed my driveway because I didn't see the tall weeds and junk in the front yard. I would highly recommend Green Earth Lawn Care if you want a job done well.

An amazing experience... first of all, it was responsiveness; next was punctuality, Marcelo was on job site and working before I was even present... because I told him my concerns prior. Then, during the job he took initiative to go extra step and make my back yard perfect. I’m going to hire him and give him full care of my back yard. He loves gardening/lawn maintenance and that is what I was looking for! Hire him; you’ll not be disappointed:)

Jose did an excellent job on both the front and back yard of my house, which was turning into a jungle. They trimmed the bushes, picked up the weeds, trimmed the trees, and sprayed weed killer so my yard will look great and I won't get those HOA letters anymore. They did the job super quick too. What would have taken me a few days took them only a few hours. They showed up right on time and were very courteous. I'm looking forward to having them keep up my lawn care maintenance.

First, ‘they’ rescheduled me 3 separate times. I wasted 2 days waiting on them. Then NO discount for my inconvenience. For the most part the work they did was acceptable but they did not have any irrigation piping, connectors or anything for lawn maintenance to fix a couple of leaks I told them I had. Then, no one called me to schedule my monthly maintenance. I finally got a hold of Brandon (owner) who said he would call me the next day to set up the service. Two days later he still hadn’t called. I fear if I had started service with LV Tree Worxs that no one would come out for service. Not a good way to run a business. Plus Brandon had a cocky attitude which he shouldn’t since his service sucks. If it was good he could show some confidence but not with this lack of service or caring. I would NEVER recommend this company.

We hired Jose to come look at our dying small yard areas. He came by quickly the same day to take a look, and gave us his thoughts & an estimate. Overall, 2 out of my 3 small yard areas were a bit neglected and needed to be brought back up to life. The most economic solution for us since we are renting this house was to only invest what was minimally required. The solution was agreed to reseed and he said he could finish the job in 2-3 hours for all three areas, including some debris/rubbish pick up, and weed spray control. So we set up a date for him and his helper to come out. The first date set was rescheduled due to him having some problems with his truck. Him and his helper showed up early morning and on time the second time. We did not physically watch over what him and his helper were doing, but could hear them at work. All in all, he was finished in about 1 hour and knocked on our door to give us a walk-through to see his handy work. Everything appeared to be in order. He described what he was going to do was not to remove the dead "thatch"/grass areas, because he has a tool/machine that punches holes into the ground so the new seeds would find their way into them. Just a side note, but I spent like 2-3 hours raking and removing as much thatch as I could because in my opinion it could not be healthy for the start of the new grass seeds. He said he gets his seeds from a place other than these nurseries so his seeds were top quality. He than added some mulch on top of the areas and placed red "Star Nursery" flags all over to detract the pigeons from coming to eat all the newly planted seeds. He missed a very obvious spot on in the front of the house where there were still some weeds and he didn't spray the weed control there, so I asked him to do that as we finished our walk through. I paid him his $200 in cash and he went on his way. I called him a week later to see if he had another solution to keeping the damn pigeons away from the seeds as they were coming by frequently. He first said, buy more red flags and put them out. I gathered all the flags I could and put them in the largest area that had the most problem. They still kept coming. I then went to get straw and asked him if muslin would be needed. He finally said, yes, I would recommend that, but only after I suggested it. Eventually I had to go buy netting to put over the yard to keep these birds away. Now 3 weeks later, my yard barely looks any better than when they first came. I wasn't able to monitor where and how many seeds they actually put down but only noticed random mounds of dirt/mulch where it looked like he put down seeds. I had to go buy more seeds, fertilizer and mulch to spread over the still large bare areas easily noticable in the large yard area in front. I had sent Jose a few texts now and tried to call him about why there isn't any improvement, and what do I need to do, but there was no response. My biggest issue with Jose and his crew is they appear to be educated in lawn care and nice people, but after the work is done and the results were not exactly what we had hoped, he is nowhere to be found. I've spent more hours working on my yard than what I paid a professional to do, and he drops the ball on communication. For sure his pricing is great compared to others but I would make sure you get to know exactly what they are supposed to do, and watch closely that they actually do what they say they would. Perhaps it will take some more time and I will adjust my review/comment for Jose in due time, however after almost a month and a continuous stream of money put into this yard, there should be better results. Especially if his special seeds are so great. We are very disappointed in his lack of communication and follow through, after his work is done. I hope that he will contact us and help us resolve this problem that he specializes in. Great Customer Service should go well beyond after completing your work, if you hope to maintain and get new business. He seems like a genuine nice and fair guy.
