Drew did a complete plumbing project for a full bath in my new basement and moved existing, builder-installed pipes that were hung below the rafters and preventing my drywall installation. Drew was did an excellent job - his finished work is impeccable and he did it for what I considered to be a very fair price for the amount of work that needed to be done. I will definitely hire him again as the only professional that I will allow to do plumbing and gas line work in my home. Highly recommended.

On time -- in fact ten minutes early -- polite and professional. Friendly and highly efficient. Wiped up not only water but also entire area under the sink. Great price! Difficult to find a plumber willing to undertake small task without over-charging. As the company mentions, they do not charge for their time to and from. If I have another plumbing problem, I will call them. Curious, I asked about the tool needed and was given -- with a smile -- a brief but complete explanation. I'm actually happy I had this problem because it led me to find this company. If/when necessary, I will call on them again.

Within approximately 5 minutes of submitting my request for plumbing help, I received a reasonable quote from Brandon, 1st Home Professional Services and we set up a date and time. He was prompt, efficient, and the problem fixed within 30 minutes. He is professional, and efficient. No doubt I will be using his services for other projects in my home.

We had a leak in the kitchen sink. It was repaired and quickly professionally. Our garage disposal was working but was old and rusting out, James removed it (at me request) and replaced the drain and plumbing. Everything is working, leak free.

Eagle Home Improvements (Hi Solutions) did a superb job replacing a leaky outdoor faucet and installing a new shut off valve inside my home. I had the same work done in another part of the house last year but Eagle charged me 30% less than the other plumbing company! I was very please with the great work they did at a reasonable price. I plan to use them again in the future and highly recommend them!

Mike did a great job with our wall and ceiling. We are not in a rush to paint the new drywall patch that he did because it almost really blended in with the existing surface. He was friendly and probably one of the friendliest vendors in thumbtack we had worked so far. He gave us tips on how to paint our drywall ourselves since he knows we are trying to do most of the jobs on our renovation work ourselves. Wished he also does plumbing, electrical and flooring because we will definitely be hiring him again. He is also reasonable or not crazy with his price. Recommended!

Stavos is an exceptional handyman. He was flexible in timing and installed a fan in my son's room without problem. He even worked with me to find a solution to fill a gap around the fan mounting (not due to his workmanship at all, but due to the size of fan I purchased and the hole in the ceiling left from the recessed lighting it replaced). Can't recommend him enough!

Ernesto showed up at my doorstep at the time expected. When I explained and directed him towards my difficulties with starting the thing he knew what to do. I also complained about not knowing how these people are getting the water heater running. He pointed me where to look to for critical problems in the future and also took care of my water temperature problem on the spot. He left with having charged minimal fees and provided me with quick advice, as well as reference points on the system in my condo I recently purchased. 5stars

Patrick was absolutely fantastic. He was very cordial. He showed up early. The job of cleaning out the drain took longer than we expected but he stayed until he got the job done and he had cleaned up. He only charged me what he had originally quoted me even though the problem was tougher than we thought. He seemed genuinely surprised when I tipped him and was very appreciative of it. I could not be happier with the results and his ability to work around my schedule. I highly recommend him for your plumbing needs and will use him again in the future if it’s needed. Thank you so much for all your hard work Patrick! I appreciate it!

After a separate company provided plumbing services, we had a lovely gaping hole in the drywall. We looked at the hole and figured why not get a quote for additional work we needed done to our home. We pointed out a few holes in the wall and needed a door replaced so why not get a comprehensive quote / estimate. We decided to go to Thumbtack, Odd Jobs responded first and we commenced the process. Odd Jobs consistently communicated with us, worked with us to solidify an accurate estimate and explained the work, were flexible to schedule the work and explained what resources and materials would be necessary to complete the job. They arrived on time to perform the work. They had the right tools and materials and did an exceptional job from start to end. They cleaned up afterwards and were professional throughout the experience. The quality alone will compel us to call Odd Jobs when we need folks that understand their business and respect their customers. Thanks Curtis

Although we had a snake, we already had a lot on our plate so I decided to post on Thumbtack. The 24-7 Plumbing & Drain firm had an opening in schedule and was able to come out the same day to unclog the only toilet in our rental home. Thanks!

Simply put, Nick is the man! He came out the day before New Year's Eve on a couple hours notice to deal with our issue. He had the problem diagnosed within minutes and resolved in an hour. An absolute pleasure to deal with and fairly priced. Would highly recommend Nick and when we inevitably have another plumbing need, he's our guy.

I was looking for a simple tiling project in my 230sqft kitchen and half bathroom. After getting all the materials Jenrri got straight to the job. Provided suggestions and materials on making the finished product look cleaner. And with it only being the two of them made great time. I can tell they work hard. Overall I am very pleased with the work. I would recommend to others and rehire in the future

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.
