David arrived and covered his shoes before entering my home..that always gets major points. He got right to it and finished in good time. He even gave me some tips and advice. I hope to not have any plumbing emergencies anytime soon but, if I do I'll definitely call Eagle Home. Top notch service.

With a last minute inquiry, James made it to my place on time, in the midst of DMV rush hour traffic. He knocked out the job effortlessly and cleaned up after he finished. He gave me some recommendations on how to fix it if it ever happens again, and was very professional. He offered the best price too. A must hire again for all my plumbing needs.

I hired Antonio Originally to paint some windows, I was so impressed with his quality of work that I had hired him for 2 other jobs. What I have come to appreciate is Antonio’s ability to be a real handyman, he can do painting, carpentry, plumbing and electrical. I intend to hire Antonio again and again.

Julian and his team were very professional and diagnosed our problem in the morning and came back to fix it that same day. The price was very fair. When it comes to something critical like plumbing, this level of service is beyond 5 stars. We will definitely reach out again if we ever need more help.

I needed a plumber because the installer that delivered my new dishwasher would not install it. They left me a diagram of what I needed to have done so when installed it would drain properly. Yovany took the time explain how newer dishwashers were and why I did not have to redo my plumbing. I would definitely recommend.

Peter and Jose were extremely professional. They repaired everything and even fixed an additional outlet they found loose. From plumbing, electrical work and some handyman projects, they did it all! I'd hire them again. Great job!

Rema was hired to replace 3 faucets in my house. His quote was very reasonable to start with. He accommodated change of scheduled when I had an emergency. He was very punctual, responsive to the my additional needs (also reasonable) and did a high quality job. I would bring him back if I have other plumbing works at my place.

My A/C is out and home warranty told me they're replacing it. I was told it's going to take 1 business day to order and ship it. Few days later, that changed to 3-4 business days. On the same afternoon it changed again to back order until almost the end of summer. I started searching my own contractor and Air Ducts Heating & Cool Plumbing Services got the job done the very next day!

Jon Drew came early, worked hard, billed only for work performed, and treated my house as respectfully (I imagine) as he treats his own. I feel fortunate that, by chance, he answered my request for plumbing help first. He has done a great job.

John recently came to my house to inspect a tiling job and give me an estimate. He helped verify that I indeed had a plumbing issue instead of tile issue, and gave me a reference for a plumbing service. He was prompt, responsive and all around pleasant to interact with. I’ll be hiring John to help with my drywall needs after the plumber resolves my water leak.

Learned about Curtis' company through work he did for a neighbor who was extremely satisfied with his work. They allowed us to see the work he'd done on their master bath and it looked great. We had our townhouse kitchen renovated by them. Curtis provided a very comprehensive estimate which detailed some items we hadn't considered such as daily clean-up, the payment schedule, and how receipts would be handled for materials purchases. His estimate came in at the middle of 4 estimates we received for tear-down of the original kitchen, new cabinet installation, tile floors and backsplash with some electrical and plumbing thrown in. He was able to accommodate an earlier start date when the cabinets we ordered were available earlier then expected by 2 weeks. He and his 2 assistants worked efficiently and more importantly they took care when doing the demo (and throughout the project) to protect the hallway floors and other areas of the house from dust, dirt and debris. They worked very efficiently and by the end of the 2nd day were starting on laying the tile floor. Cabinet installation went smoothly and he was kind enough to point out a couple items which we needed to report back to the cabinet makers regarding some bowing. Overall the project took approximately 9 business days from start to finish with a few small visits to finish up hardware, trim and reinstallation of the dishwasher once the counters and sink folks (separate company) finished their piece. His 2 assistants were equally pleasant and made us feel comfortable so we could ask questions as needed. We plan to use Curtis' company Oddjobs.pro again for upcoming bathroom renovations and some other work we need done.

I was worried that perhaps I may have damaged a sump pump when trying to clean it, and I sent a request in through Thumbtack. I heard from Norlan a couple hours later, and as he was in the neighborhood, he stopped by for a quick look. He checked the sump pump and verified that there was no problem with it and that it did not require work. He did not charge me for this visit/appraisal. Norlan strikes me as a knowledgeable and honest person, I will certainly turn to him when I have a plumbing issue in the future.

Last Spring, Brandon Contractor LLC completed several projects in my home with excellent quality and customer service! I had recently purchased a foreclosure and was looking for a reliable contractor to complete a few projects. Mr. Vega and I met so that I could share my vision for the projects that I wanted completed - a small window cut in the wall above the kitchen sinking looking into the living room, refinishing the front door, backsplash in the kitchen and painting the upstair hallway and stairway. We met to pick out materials and I was allowed to provide my input as well as receive suggestions from Mr. Vega that would improve the overall job. When the work begun, a possible concern was noted by Mr. Vega and his team with plumbing. It was addressed immediately. All of the projects were completed in a timely manner and I am extremely satisfied with the outcome! The team was professional, courteous and the pricing was great! I often receive complements from visitors to my home and I plan to use the company again in the near future to spruce up my patio. I highly recommend Brandon Contractor LLC for any of your home improvement projects!

I was looking for a simple tiling project in my 230sqft kitchen and half bathroom. After getting all the materials Jenrri got straight to the job. Provided suggestions and materials on making the finished product look cleaner. And with it only being the two of them made great time. I can tell they work hard. Overall I am very pleased with the work. I would recommend to others and rehire in the future

What I liked most about David was his trustworthiness. He came to fix a leak under our sink. It wasn't active when he got there and so he had to run a lot of diagnostics. He went ahead and replaced the faucet and couple other parts and left for the day, saying that if I found the leak again to call him and he'd come back. Sure enough the next morning we woke up to more water and I let him know. He said he would come back out right away, whenever was most convenient for us. Sure enough he came on a weekend with his daughter in tow and no only fixed the job but also took care of another issue that had started in another part of the house free of charge. When he left the second time, sure enough the next morning the sink was leaking yet again so I texted him once again. He walked me through what it could be and said he'd come back out. It turned out that one of the rings was just a bit loose so there was no reason for him to come back out. Couple days later, all seems dry. David may not get it completely right at first as plumbing can be difficult, but he is one of the most trustworthy handymen I have ever encountered and he seems very knowledgable about many different skills. I'd hire him again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
