I had met with two other fence contractors as well as Ernesto of Femar Fencing. All the prices were fairly close and competitive. Ernesto took the time to explain exactly what he was going to do and how and why he was doing it. 275 feet of fence removed and replaced in less than 2 days. He did note that there was some issue with some of the pickets and, instead of just using them and saying no more, he advised that he was returning them to the supplier and securing more. That's the sign of a quality individual who takes real pride in his work. I've already recommended his services to a friend who is also looking into getting some fencing replaced. Bottom line, I made the correct choice to go with Femar Fencing and will enjoy my fence for years and years to come.

Wilson is great. He provided an honest and fair price and explained in detail what needed to happen with the project and all the steps he was going to take. He came out to do the job on the day I asked and knocked it out in two days. I had over 130 feet of old fencing to remove and he put up brand new 6 foot privacy fencing in the back and 4 foot picket fence in the front. Everything turned out great. I would highly recommend Wilson and his crew!

Reynaldo was quick to respond to my initial request, provided a competitive estimate, and quickly answered all of my questions leading up to the project. The removal of the old fence and installation of the new fence was completed quickly. After the initial installation there were a few items I noted that needed adjustment (reversing a gate and few sections of panel framing to face away from the neighbors, some nails that weren't fully set in the wood and a few crooked fence pickets. Reynaldo returned promptly and fixed every item on my list, double checking to confirm my satisfaction. He mentioned "this is your 8-year fence and I want to ensure you are happy with it". He also provides a three year warranty on the fence installation and materials, aside from natural aging of the wood, which is great customer service.

Jose did an excellent job on installing our fence. It was freezing outside that day so my husband and I were thinking he would reschedule, but he came on time bright and early like he said he would. Finished the same day. We would definitely hire Quality First Construction again!

Deck Professionals LLC, installed a wooden privacy fence around my residential home (which backs up to four different properties). They did an excellent job, from start to finish, at an affordable price. I got several quotes for this job, and they beat them all. Now that the job is complete and I am very satisfied with the final product. The estimator was very knowledgeable and helped me narrow down my fence layout and design. Overall a very good experience. I recommend giving these guys a call for your fence or decking needs.

Stewart did a terrific job getting our home ready to put on the market. He repaired and painted drywall, replaced light fixtures and outlets, did interior carpentry jobs, and generally did everything necessary to get the house in tip-top shape . He also rebuilt several exterior gates and stained the decks and fence. Stewart always arrived promptly and worked steadily for long days. He gave accurate estimates of how long each part of the job would take and gave good and fair advice on what needed to be done. His work was excellent, and I plan to go back to him for work in the future.

Do not hesitate to hire Jeff! He's professional, trustworthy, and honest. And he does amazing work! He came out within 24 hours of us contacting him to replace our toilet. We asked him to also replace our kitchen faucet as well. He made it so easy for us, and even handles the disposal of the old hardware. Moved his successful business to the D.C./NoVA area recently. Don't let the lack of reviews here discourage you from hiring him! We are thrilled with our new toilet and working kitchen faucet, and will be hiring him to refurbish our deck and fence in the next couple of months.

After talking to a few fencing companies, we decided to go with Catlett Construction for putting up the fence at our property. The length to complete the entire fence is over a mile – which we plan to do in two or three phases. We were very pleased with the quality and workmanship provided by Catlett Construction for the first phase of the fencing. Catlett Construction is a family owned business and is run very efficiently and professionally. Both Jason and Jeremy worked with us very patiently to plan how to fence the property. We plan to have them back for doing the next phase. Recommend Catlett Construction for all types of fencing. Dan

We tried for years to cut down a grove of mature Tree of Heaven and wild cherry, each over 25 feet tall, placed between our house and the goat barn. One of them fell on the patio, crushed a Kwanzan cherry, and took half the Harry Lauder bush. It was time to call the experts! We had Mr. Ventura and his crew cut down all the trees leaning over the fence, barn, or house: 11 of them. Although it was a daunting job (I was too scared to even look out the window), Mr. Ventura completed the task flawlessly and professionally, neatly stacked the useful wood to cure for future use as fire wood, and left the place nicely clean. His price was very competitive. We were very happy with his work and recommended him to my brother in law, also for tree removal.

Victor and his helper did a good job of re setting a stone walkway around the garage by lifting them up and re setting each stone at the right angle away from the house. Will hire again to add fencing to existing fencing in our back yard.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
