Our project was to install hardwood flooring for the staircase to the second floor as well as the second floor hallway. Costa Floors was able to reuse the wood on our stairs which saved us money. We choose a deep chocolate color which turned out rich and beautiful. The crew was very professional and they worked quickly to keep the disruption to a minimum. I would use them again and I highly recommend them.

RB Contractor Inc. finished our basement project that included drywall finishing, shower installation, bathroom flooring and wall reconstruction. Remberto and his team did a tremendous job of finishing the drywall, taping, mudding and sanding. The team also custom built our shower with tile and put in the tile flooring as well. The completed job far exceeds our expectations and Remberto and his team were professional, timely and did an amazing job. We highly recommend this company for any basement remodeling/finishing.

Marvin is a great Professional in the business. The quality in his work is noteworthy. We appreciate his keen eye and honest assessment. Our unfinished porch was completed with stone similar to the original stone on the 80 year old home. We will use Marvin for future projects.

Oscar helped me remove the slate tile from my kitchen that I had started and could not finish in time for my new floors to be installed. Oscar and his assistant completed with hand tools what I could not do with a rented demolition hammer. Oscar is professional, polite and prompt. I would hire him again.

Our experience with Mr. James and his team was very pleasant. All of the guys were very knowledgeable and professional. They handled all permits and inspections necessary to complete the project. We noticed an infestation of mold growth in one of our properties. We were already contemplating remodeling this area of the basement anyway. We decided to not only remediate the mold but also to hang new drywall throughout the entire basement, install about 13 recessed lights with smart motion switches, slate tile flooring, and rough in and install a full bath in the space. James came in and offered my husband and I a lot of different options to reach our desired goal beyond the mold remediation. He also did the bathroom design, and suggested some beautiful tile combinations and we loved them all. In short we decided to go with James to do the work and the project went flawless. Very professional, clean within reason during a renovation, and very organized and personable. He kept us informed at every stage and there were no surprises. They completed the project in about10 days including county inspections. James followed up with us a month after the job was completed to make sure that everything ok. Great customer service!! We will definitely be using Unlimited Resources in the near future and have recommended James and his team to several people already.

I hired Alex Kirpichenko of AAK Contractor to put in a backsplash over my kitchen sink. It was a small but exacting job because the backsplash was a photograph of an Italian landscape projected onto ceramic tile. From the very beginning I was most impressed with Alex's knowledge, authority, and efficiency. I had at first planned just to install the backsplash itself, but after discussing it with Alex decided it would look best surrounded by more tile, extending the full length of the walls under the cabinets. I had thought beige tile would be best, but Alex guided me to a pale blue gray stone, which brought out the beauty of the photograph in a way that beige wouldn't have. He also suggested that the backsplash be surrounded with strips of polished stone of the same color, giving the effect of a window. I really do feel as if I were gazing through a window on a peaceful Tuscan scene! The finished product has surpassed my expectations, and has warmed up my white and stainless-steel kitchen. And because of the window effect, the kitchen seems larger. The job took just a few days from start to finish and the price was reasonable, considering the high quality of the work. I would certainly use AAK Contractor again and would have no hesitation in recommending the company to others.

Very good experience. The estimate was completed in three days and the work was scheduled shortly after. The work was completed as planned and on time. Marvin's contract requires that you inspect the work and sign off on the job before final payment. I like that this step is part of the formal process. They did a great job. Marvin is very responsive and his price was very reasonable more in line with what I expected to pay. The job was to paint the exterior wood/trim on a townhouse (HOA compliant - in general the trim is in good condition). Other companies on Thumbtack and Angie's List were quoting me much higher prices. I would hire him again. Great balance of quality and price.

Juan was great to work with...he fixed our leaking shower and repaired and painted out ceiling wall. He was on time and completed the work efficiently at a very fair price. We also had him and his team come to add stacked stone to cover old Brick around our fireplace. They were very careful to match and lay the stone perfectly. We are thrilled with the results! Juan and his team were professional and respectful of our home (laying drop clothes and cleaning up when finished working), We highly recommend Juan and his team. We will definitely be calling them for jobs in the future.

It was a pleasure working with John. He refinished the cabinets in our kitchen, added a tile backsplash and put down ceramic tile on the floor. He also installed wood molding and floor thresholds throughout the upstairs level and stained it to match our wood flooring. Everyone that visits loves our kitchen and wood molding throughout! I will definitely use John again for future projects.

Craig Hart has done three bathroom remodeling projects for us in the past few years, and he assisted with a kitchen remodel as well. We've been extremely pleased with the quality of his work, the turnaround time and his work style. Craig is very knowledgeable about home improvement projects, and we learned of him through a reference from a friend for whom he did a bathroom remodel. Craig always provided an easy to understand estimate with the scope of work, had ideas to lessen costs, and never exceeded the amount discussed. He also was very reliable, coming on the days and times he promised, and finishing the job prior to deadline. We would hire him to do any home remodeling project. Specifically we had him do flooring and tile, hook up plumbing, drywall patching and repair, installing heating flooring in our master bathroom, adding finishing touches to tile such as bullnose, etc. We have been super happy with the results and his expertise has enhanced our bathrooms and kitchen tremendously. Craig is very responsive and easy to work with. I highly recommend him to anyone!

Siver Star Builders did a backsplash installation. The tile was neatly installed and the cutouts for outlets, switches, and window sill were done expertly. The grouting was a little rough, however, with grout on the face of the stone tiles.

I initially hired this team to renovate my master bathroom main bathroom, replace my front and basement door, and update my bedrooms with pain, fans and carpeting in my home. As they progressed in completing the job I added on the renovation of my living room and hallways. They took two weeks to complete this project. What impressed me were their professionalism, efficiency, style, and prompt response to any questions or issues that I had. They were on time from our initial appointment and every day until it ended. The team ensured that outside of the work completed my home was clean when they left. The quality of work, paint, rug, and fixtures is excellent. My home looks like a stylish new home entirely. This team kept in contact with my daily during this process to ensure my satisfaction with the service. I have recommended them to several people during my renovations and have plans to work with them in the near future.

“Count yourself fortunate if you have an opportunity to work with Fairfax Marble And Tile. Installing a new floor or bathroom is often fraught with anxiety, but you can set your fears aside when you put yourself in the hands of Ben Dyer and his crew. Considering the widespread recognition the company has received for its creations, not to mention its winning entry in the Residential Natural Stone category of the Tenth Annual National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA) TileLetter Awards, it is almost an understatement to say that Ben Dyer will deliver a high-quality product. Customers in Northern Virginia have a right to expect that their projects will be done well and in a timely fashion, and Fairfax Marble And Tile will not disappoint them. What customers may not expect, however, is the personal service that accompanies every aspect of the job. Phone calls and e-mails are returned promptly, a supervisor is always available to answer questions, and Ben does 95% of the work himself and visits all work sites on a daily basis. So focused is the attention that you may even be lulled into thinking that you are the only client, when in fact, you are simply one of many discriminating homeowners who have chosen Fairfax Marble and Tile.. Exasperated with subcontractors? Suspicious of temporary laborers? Worry no more, for as the Fairfax team includes carpenters and plumbers as well as master tilers who have all been certified by the Ceramic Tile Education Foundation- subcontractor delays and incompetent workmanship will be a thing of the past. Furthermore, Ben plans in advance and executes on schedule, minimizing any potential disruption to your household. Most importantly, perhaps, he also offers a five-year guarantee on his work--a guarantee that is far longer than those provided by the majority of his competitors. Home improvements can be unpredictable and costly; why take a chance on a company with less experience when Fairfax Marble and Tile will do the job right the first time." A. Simko

I am very happy with the job Raul did for me today. He pressure washed our patio and patio fence at our townhouse, and it all looks great. The concrete patio is decorative with small river stones embedded in exposed aggregate concrete. Someone took time to make this patio years ago, and Raul's attentive cleaning revealed the nice features. The patio fence is 100% better looking too, the garden all still intact and we'll follow Raul's advice to seal the fence as soon as it is dry. He arrived at the agreed time and honored his quote. I recommend Raul!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

      • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
      • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
        • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
      • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
      • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
        • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
      • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
        • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
        • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
        • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
          • Includes removal of the dura rock.
      • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

      • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
        • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
      • 620 square feet of maple floor:
        • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
        • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
          • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
