Things to know before you get started.
6 Tips for Hiring a Tile Installation Pro
  1. 1. Check references

Tile is an investment in the home and will most likely be in place for many years, so it is important to find a pro who can provide quality work.

  2. 2. Choose the right tile

Discuss preferences in decor and describe your family’s lifestyle. Some tiles are more durable than others, so an active family may prefer ceramic or laminate tile over vinyl tile, for example.

  3. 3. Request written estimates

Get written estimates from the installers being considered for the job. Make sure the estimate details the material being provided and labor hours. Calculate the cost per square foot.

  4. 4. See a plan first

If the tile chosen has a bold pattern, ask to see the tile layout before the installer begins attaching the tile sections to the floor or wall. This can save a lot of extra work and mess later.

  5. 5. Agree on cleanup

Find out if the pro will get rid of dust from cutting tiles and bits of adhesive that splatter or splash around the area. As a rule, the contractor will clean up the mess, but do not assume they will.

  6. 6. Make an installment payment

Expect to pay a percentage of the total estimate up front to cover the tile installer's material costs with the balance due when the work is completed, but get a receipt.
