Things to know before you get started.
7 Steps to Upholstery Cleaning
  1. 1. Removing dirt and debris is the first step to any upholstery or furniture cleaning project. Upholstery cleaners use vacuum crevice brushes to remove dirt particles from between the cushions.

  2. 2. Before starting to clean, your pro locates the care tag attached to the product. There are four different codes to look for, each of which determines how to care for the item.

  3. 3. Blotting stains immediately when they occur can save you more difficult cleaning later on. It is wrong to think that only colored spills lead to stains in furniture and upholstered products. Even clear stains can attract dirt and oils, which cause discoloration over time.

  4. 4. If your upholstered furniture has wood detailing, your pro will avoid getting cleaning solutions on these surfaces. Many cleaning solutions contain chemicals that cause discoloration to the wood finish. You can protect exposed wood by taping on heavy duty trash bags.

  5. 5. Your pro should not allow the stuffing of furniture to become saturated with water-based solutions. Water that penetrates deeply into the stuffing of the furniture is hard to remove and takes a long time to dry. This can lead to mold and mildew growth.

  6. 6. A skilled upholstery cleaner should never use hard-bristled brushes on upholstered surfaces. This can cause weakening of the fabric, which will lead to tears or worn spots.

  7. 7. Your pro will make it a point to always clean the furniture or upholstered products in a well-ventilated area. This allows harmful chemical fumes to dissipate, allows for adequate drying, and ensures that dirt and bacteria don't re-enter the furniture.
