Our new house did not have a lawn well kept by previous tenants. Christian and another individual (forget the name sorry) did a thorough inspection and showed me the different types of insects that my home had. From spiders, types of ants and the wasps that made their way to the home. They even came out on the same day since they just finished up a job nearby and were able to do my house right after the free estimate! They have a great warranty so if I notice anything they'll come out and investigate and spray as needed. Thanks guys, fast, efficient and knowledgeable! TLC

When it comes to pest control it's not often you think, wow what a wonderful experience. Both the C and D of C&D pest management did exactly that. Candance answered my calls and concerns quickly. Was polite, informative and professional. Dave was able to give me a reasonable quote prior to coming to our house which was significantly cheaper than the big company that came out and performed a free inspection. Candace was able to get me scheduled for service within 72 hours while the big company said it would be a week or so before they could have a technician out. Dave arrived early after texting to make sure that was ok. He was professional and thorough. He explained everything prior to service and answered any questions I had knowledgeably but in termanology I could understand. I would highly recommend C&D!

I can't say enough about how awesome Frank was! I originally reached out because we suspected termites in our shed. Frank came out shortly after I had contacted him and not only did a full termite inspection, but also address a nagging mouse problem we had. Frank took the time to explain everything he did and why he did it. He also offered for us to just shoot him a text any time we had a question about anything pest related we saw in or around our house. Frank truly went above and beyond and will no be our go-to exterminator. Thanks, Frank!

Marvin came out within an hour of me calling him after seeing his quote on Thumbtack. He was very thorough while searching for signs of a bed bug infestation and applied a spray pesticide to my entire home to kill any bugs that might have slipped through the visual inspection. Marvin's very knowledgable and very willing to work with a homeowner/tenant to help solve their pest problem.

We had to have a VA termite inspection done for a refinance. In the past, we had another company force us to get treatment even though there were no visible signs of active termite activity. They based this off of damage which was previously treated. Shawn saw the same damage upon his inspection and advised us what we needed to do to correct it so we didn't have any issues with our lender requiring additional steps in the process or further treatment of our home. Working with Key Pest Control has been one of the most satisfying experiences I have had in quite a long time. I found Shawn to be very honest and caring for the customer and not at all pushy for services not needed or wanted. Highly recommend this company for all your pest control needs.

About

I take a lot of pride in my work, and I truly believe in the golden rule of treating others how I would want to be treated. Therefore, I am very courteous, attentive, and empathetic to your concerns and needs since I am a homeowner myself and have gone through this process. On my inspections, I don't adhere to the standards of practice, I SURPASS them! The only way to perform a true home inspection is to dig deeper than most others and really go the extra mile for my clients. I ALWAYS walk attics (which can be hard for some of the older, heavier inspectors), and I definitely get into crawl spaces when it is safe and where so many issues are usually found. Again, this can be difficult for a lot of inspectors who are likely to just disclaim that the space was not "readily accessible." Also, I am very knowledgeable, but if I don't have an answer, I do my best to find the answer for you. Once you are a client, you are always a client, and I am here for your concerns or questions about home maintenance and such for life.

Alan, was awesome. I'm new to this "home buying business" and was a little nervous hiring a "home inspector" not sure what to expect or even what they did precisely but Alan and Vertex made me feel at ease... After calling to make an appointment with very short notice, even with a few "odd" stipulations, Alan was able to accommodate me without hesitation. Upon meeting at our agreed time at the property, Alan presented himself and his company very well. From the beginning he explained in detail exactly what he did and all the "extras" that come with Vertex's Sugnature Service, he answered all questions I had, and we began the inspection. He seemed very thorough and knowledgable on all aspects of the home. I learned a lot during the inspection and was even given some requested tips as to how to tackle certain "projects" later down the line after taking ownership of the house. He made the whole process enjoyable. After the inspection I received my written report a mere 8 hours later complete with extremely detailed descriptions of all findings as well as photographs with "arrows" and notes pointing out specifics. The report was broken down, easy to read (even for laymen like myself) and clearly organized to highlight items that were safety concerns, or just aesthetic in nature. I was quite inpressed with the entire process. I highly recommend Vertex to anyone who is in the home buying process and are looking for a qualified "inspector". If I am in the market to purchase another house, I will definetly be calling Alan and Vertex again!

After two weeks of what I thought were worsening mosquito bites I did some research on the internet and discovered that I may have bed bugs. I started freaking out abs called Orkin (the only pest control company that I had ever heard of) and they were able to come out a few days later and do an inspection (a $95 inspection). She did what I thought was a pretty thorough search found one bed nymph bed bed in my room in the basement and said it was going to be 1 thousand dollars to treat the basement and living room area. Although I thought that was expensive I scheduled an appointment for later that week (mostly so I could figure out how to pay for it) but after talking with my roommates (who had no evidence of bites) we decided that was waaay to expensive. So I looked online, somehow came across thumbtack and Penny from Adam Johnson Pest control was quick to respond to my inqury. We talked back and forth on the site that night and I was able to speak with her on the phone first thing the following morning. She said that after our discussion and my reports from what Orkin did there would be no need for them to do an inspection (which would have been a nominal fee, much less than Orkin), and she was able to schedule for she and Adam to come out the next day for treatment. They agreed to treat the entire house for $650, which included an entire finished basement and full bath, 2nd level kitchen and living room area, and the 3rd floor that had 3 bedrooms and two bathrooms!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you get rid of termites?

The best way to get rid of termites is to act fast. Termites are a problem that will only get worse — and no matter how much you want them to, they usually don’t magically move out on their own. There are three main types of termites: drywood, dampwood and subterranean. Drywood and dampwood termites sneak through cracks in your exterior paint, nail holes, and gaps near windows and other openings and begin to eat through your wood. Subterranean termites enter your house from the ground up by creating mud tunnels. In all cases, they survive by eating the wood of your house. The type of termites you have can steer the treatment plan.

Methods of termite extermination include fumigation, use of pesticides, and use of natural elements that are poisonous to the bugs. The extent of your termite infestation will help determine the treatment method. If you have drywood or dampwood termites that have infiltrated all aspects of the wood in your home, the pest control pro may recommend enclosing the whole house in a tent and gassing the termites via fumigation. If you have subterranean termites, often the entire footprint of the home must be treated by drilling liquid treatments into the slab or foundation of the home to exterminate the colonies. In any case, once you see signs of termites, it’s time to take action and call a pest pro.

What are the signs of termites in your home?

When you see signs of termites in your home, call a trusted pest control professional as soon as possible to handle the situation. Termites feed on wood, meaning they eat through the wood that makes up the frame, floors and other components of your house. Most people don’t know they have termites until they discover the damage done, because termites remain hidden underground or inside the wood they are eating. Keep on the lookout for these signs of termites:

  • Water bubbles in your interior or exterior paint: If you poke at what look like paint bubbles and find termite droppings inside, it’s a sign of termite infestation.
  • Frass: This is a fancy term for termite poop. Keep your eyes peeled for what look like six-sided salt and pepper droppings.
  • Mud tubes: Subterranean termites move between their earth home and your house by building mud tunnels. Mud tubes under or along the side of your house or foundation are a sure sign of a termite infestation.
  • Wings or swarming near your home: As a new colony is looking for a home, they fly (swarm), then shed their wings and burrow into nearby wood.
  • Softening of wood or hollowed-out wood: Termites don’t like paint, lacquer varnish or other wood finishes, so they’ll eat inside the wood and leave the exterior finish like a shell.

Are termites harmful to humans?

Termites are harmful to humans in that they can eat a home from the inside out. But unlike some other insects, termites don’t carry infection, nor do they bite or feed off people like parasitic bedbugs. So while they’re not harmful to your health, they can be extremely harmful to your wallet. The EPA reports that every year termites cause billions of dollars of structural damage in the United States. Immediate action and treatment is the best approach if you see signs of termites. The national average cost for an exterminator ranges from $250 to $400, but costs may be higher if you have a whole house infestation on your hands. Here are a few examples of average cost:

  • Standard liquid treatment of subterranean termites: $3-$4 per linear foot. An extermination company may have a minimum service fee, such as $150, to come out and provide treatment, no matter how small the space.
  • Liquid treatment of subterranean termites including foaming and drilling into concrete slabs: $4-$5 per linear foot.
  • Liquid treatment of a 2,000-square-foot home for subterranean termites: approximately $400.
  • Fumigation treatment of drywood termites: $1,200-$1,500 for a 30,000- to 35,000-cubic-foot home. Pros measure fumigation costs in cubic feet. Fumigation costs can also be affected by the number of stories in your home.
