I needed my garage drywall repaired. He came over fairly quickly after I inquired and gave me a quote the same day. He started the work on time and only took a break when it was time for lunch. My husband and I are happy with the service.

Rescue One did a fantastic job on my kitchen remodel! They finished on time and went above and beyond what I expected. They even fixed my garage door opener while they were here at no additional charge. Mike and his guys were polite, honest, and hardworking. I will definitely be calling them for my next project!

I just moved into a rental property, and the yard was a jungle. Northside (Kris) came in and tamed it. I'm no longer embarrassed by the yard. He did it fast, on short notice, and reasonable rate. Highly recommend this young man.

This is a very belated review, but Marcus was professional, punctual, and did a great job installing our sliding glass door. He came out right away to take measurements. We ordered the door based on his measurements and once the door arrived we picked it up and had it ready at the house. We notified him it was here and he came out with a partner right away to do the install. Within a few hours our old french doors were swapped with a fully installed sliding glass door. He did a great job. Over a year later and we still love our doors and the work done. One note, make sure you have trim available to go around the bottom of the door frame if you are converting to sliding glass. We were lucky enough to have some on hand. Marcus cut the piece down and put it at the bottom of the door and it looked much more complete than without it! Great job and a nice guy!

John was hired to repair a couple of holes in detached garage roof and wound having to replace entire roof. It was reassuring to be able to leave a garage key with him to be able to do the work on his schedule, to have him work with the city officials issuing permits and conducting inspections, and technical knowledge of supplies and remodel of the garage roof. I once again have a safe place to park my car out of the weather conditions. If it would be needed again, I would certainly consider using John Lynn again.

Shane was right on time. We needed a cabinet assembled, garage storage rails and a bike rack hung and some pictures and a mirror hung. He did a great job. Everything was centered and leveled properly. A couple places need some touch up paint after the work was completed and he took care of it, even finding some areas that needed a touch up that weren't part of the projects. One issue we had was not his fault. The bike rack needed to be hung on a stud. There is a quirk in the house where the stud didn't run down the entirety of the wall. One screw was in the "bottom" stud, but the top screw was just in the drywall. So when we went to hang the bike the next day, the rack began to pull from the wall. I called Shane and he came out out 30 minutes later, diagnosed the issue and rehung the bike rack, cleaning up the prior holes. We'll definitely use SK Maintenance again. Very satisfied with the quality of work and Shane appears to be a stand up guy.

Charlie did a fantastic job on our attic-to-master suite conversion. Great communication and very accommodating to our needs. Charlie ensured that the large project would be minimally invasive while we continued to stay at the residence. He built a staircase for entry to the project area so that everyday function of the home could be maintained. The budget never wavered throughout and our options were well planned in the initial stages. I would recommend Chux Reconstrux to anyone seeking a professional for any project; large or small. Proceed with confidence!

Randy and his son did some wood trim repairs and repainted the exterior of my garage. I was very satisfied with their work. They took a bit longer than I was hoping, but most of the delay was due to rain. And he was able to get to the job within a week of giving the estimate where another company said they were booked for the next two months. Randy kept in touch and followed through on his promises. And his quote was lowest of three I got, almost half as much as the highest.

I hired Jeff's to unclog a drain in my garage. Not only did they do that, but they also figured out why the drain clogged so easily and fixed that too. All for the price they bid for just unclogging the drain! Definitely a job done right!

JW("Slim") did an excellent job replacing/installing an exterior side door on my detached garage. He visited and assessed the project site to provide an economical estimate and was able to schedule the work within a few days. His response time was always fast via Thumbtack email. He finished the project within the predicted time resulting in a final cost equal to the estimate. He was very friendly, answered all my questions and provided me with the necessary information to purchase the pre-fab door ahead of time. I am very pleased with the final product and the quality craftsmanship, and plan to hire Slim again for another carpentry project.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
