This was our first time using Thumbtack's website and Maintenance Solutions so I was nervous. But the user friendly website and high quality of service we received totally put my fears at ease. Our entire experience was outstanding! Thanksgiving night our smoke detector went off in our furnace room. There was no fire or smoke, but we knew we needed to have our furnace checked out. We tried contacts we knew and some others referred to us, but no one could come out for a week. So I jumped on Thumbtack and received a very timely response and reasonable offer from Maintenance Solutions. I called and Rachel was professional and friendly. She confirmed our situation and when they could make it out. We hired them and Rachel explained everything up front and in email. Then Rachel followed up with a confirmation call as well as calling the day of the appointment. Jeremy arrived on time and identified 2 key problems. - He identified a pipe that was bent and was producing a corrosive liquid that was building up and damaging our furnace. - He identified a gas leak that could have led to an explosion Jeremy repaired and cleaned up our furnace in less than 4 hours, and explained the entire process to my wife. We were out $250 as opposed to shelling out a whole lot more to replace the furnace. A major appliance company wouldn’t have invested this time with us. I would hire them again and refer them to anyone. Thanks for taking care of us Jeremy and Rachel!

Donovan is extremely pro-active. He collected all the info he needed about my furnace before the day of the appointment. He arrived 15 minutes early, went straight to work and was finished in 10 minutes! He even took the time to show me what had happened and explained that he guarantees his work. If the furnace stops heating again, he'll return and fix it for free! This was the epitome of customer service.

We just bought a home in Lee's Summit, Missouri. When we looked at the home, we noticed a sour sewage smell. Other than that we loved the house. The selling agent assured us that the smell would be addressed before we moved in. We hired Bull Dog Inspections to inspect the house. The inspector and the plumber working with him said they couldn't find the source of the odor and suggested that we just air out the house. The selling agent hired a plumber and he said the problem was that a vent in the basement wasn't capped. So he capped the vent and declared it fixed. The selling agent also had the air vents cleaned. When we did the final walk through of the house, we continued to smell the sewage odor. We should have refused to close until the problem was fixed, but we took possession of the house. We hired a plumber to address the problem and he said the sewer vent in the basement was causing the problem. He replaced the vent and declared it fixed, but we continued to smell the sewage odor. So we decided to approach it from the Heating and Cooling system angle. We hired Calvert Plumbing, Heating and Cooling to do normal maintenance to our HVAC system and while they were here we asked them to trouble shoot the sewage odor problem. The first thing they pointed out was that the furnace exhaust was on the roof and it was only about 21 inches away from the sewage exhaust vent It is unusual for a furnace exhaust vent to run UP to the roof. When it was windy we could smell the odor even stronger because the wind was pushing the sewage exhaust down through the furnace vent. Instead of stopping there, fixing that problem and declaring it fixed, Clint and Chris suggested that they do a smoke test which, most of the time, definitely determines the source of a sewage system odor. A smoke bomb is set off in the sewage system and if there is a crack in a pipe or an exhaust problem it will show up. When the smoke bomb was set off, smoke came billowing out of the return air vent in the main living area. They cut into the return air vent to take a look and found a 2 inch sewage exhaust pipe inside the return air vent. The return air vent has been pushing toxic sewage gas through the whole house. Clint and Chris from Calvert Plumbing, Heating and Cooling didn't give up until they found the root causes (plural) of the problem. They systematically diagnosed the problem, one layer at a time. They permanently fixed the problem, not with a quick band aid fix, but used the best possible solution to be sure the system was running efficiently and the air circulating in the house was clean and safe to breathe. We hired Clint and Chris from Calvert Plumbing, Heating and Cooling to do routine maintenance on our heating and cooling system and they solved a highly unusual problem that many experts before them were not able to figure out. We are so appreciative of their persistence and their determination to fix a problem that could have seriously affected our health.

We were trying to get our house ready to sell and the air conditioner died. And since we knew our furnace was old and probably next, we decided to replace them both. What started out as a highly stresssful incident, turned out to be a really positive experience, thanks to the efforts of the team at R MECH Heating Plumbing and Cooling. Mike came out for an estimate and we really enjoyed talking with him. The rates were amazing and the no pressure attitude was refreshing. Most of all, the contract terms were above and beyond what we expected. Financing was arranged and workmen showed up on the appointed day. Everyone was courteous and efficient and when they left, we had a shiny, new ac and furnace, all within 4 days of first contact. We could tell a huge diifference right away with our new Lennox appliances. We would highly recommend R MECH Heating Cooling and Plumbing. This company is amazing. If you're looking for a company that genuinely strives to provide the best experience possible for the customer, then this is the company to go with.

The guys were great. Curious, very clean, and came fairly quickly too. They were thorough and I felt the fee was reasonable for servicing two units. I needed some freon, not much and they were upfront on how much it was and how much I really needed. I have them scheduled to come service my furnaces in the fall already too. They beat the heck out of AB May.

They provided the best quote for a whole home humidifier. I called on a Wednesday and they were out to the house on a Friday to install. I also had them do a heat pump/furnace inspection while on site. Installation went smoothly and quickly. Really appreciate the service. Would absolutely use again.

My kids bathtub tub was draining incredibly slow (thanks to encouraging my daughter to paint- little did I know she had been pouring her used paints down the drain). After multiple failed attempts to fix it myself- I realized, I am not a plumber. Plus who wants to actually do this?! Oh wait...plumbers actually WANT to do this! They are trained & certified to deal with the messes we make! Polestar is extremely qualified in plumbing & heating & cooling. I should have made the phone call to them at the first sight of problems instead of causing myself a headache! Danny came out to diagnose the issue. Gave me a written proposal of the work that needed to be done -with upfront pricing even! I agreed to move forward with the repairs. Mike followed shortly after to do the repairs needed. Both guys were extremely respectful of my home, wore their shoe covers to prevent tracking in anything. Incredibly polite & communicated with me throughout the entire process. They genuinely cared about my problems, fixed it within a couple hours & we were good to go! The office staff answering the phones were wonderful as well. Great plumbers, technicans & office staff. I can not thank them enough!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace serviced?

When your furnace isn’t regularly serviced it can operate less efficiently. This increases your energy bills and also prevents your furnace from keeping your home as warm as you like. Keep your furnace properly maintained with regular service. The national average furnace service cost is between $60 and $80. Companies may offer tuneup specials that cover all the necessary testing, tightening, measuring and cleaning to keep your equipment running at top efficiency. If you have a newer system, furnace service costs may be covered by your warranty. Outside of warranty, a basic tuneup might start at $58 and a more advanced maintenance cleaning could be over $120. Here are some signs your furnace may need service:

  • The furnace has stopped functioning entirely.
  • The temperature cannot be regulated.
  • Rooms in the home are either too hot or too cold.
  • The heated air coming from the furnace smells like gas.
  • The thermostat isn’t working.
  • Strange noises are coming from the furnace.
