I have taken six lessons from Ms. Head. Prior to that, I had two piano instructors for a total of two years. At 67, my piano skills come late to me and my ambitions meet my ability. Ms. Head inspires me to do more than learn 20 pieces I love to play and play Christmas music for (not yet conceived) grandchildren. She makes me perform and by doing so, my music becomes more beautiful: To my ears. How does she do this? i.e., make us perform rather than play? She uses body language, e.g., she asks me to touch the back of her hand while she plays and moves her hand in a motion she’s trying to teach me. It makes it easier to play when you adapt these hand movements. I’ve learned to relax on the bench by moving my body back and forth, like a Japanese bow, or a forward fold. This absolutely takes tension out of your body and allows your skill to shine through. Fanny recommends two-a-days, but not twice as much time, to practice the piano. I’ve tried it and the second time I sit down, everything sounds better. After my lesson, I’m excited to sit down at the piano and practice what she just asked me to do. It only took five lessons to keep my fingers curved instead of sticking straight out and taking longer to reach the key. The most endearing thing about Ms. Head is her admission of her own mistakes at the piano and through her training. She acknowledges the difficulty of changing bad habits but encourages me when she knowingly says “It’s worth it.” I highly recommend Ms. Head to all students; I suspect she’s just as good with children.
