Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to fix a fence?

The average cost of fence repairs is around $250, with most homeowners paying anywhere between $200 and $300. Fence repairs have a wide range of potential costs, however, ranging from $50 to as much as $1,443. The cost of your fence repair project depends on multiple factors, including where you live, what type of repair you need, the terrain and the fence materials used.

Why does my gate sag?

A gate can sag for a number of reasons. One common reason is that the screws holding the hinges in the wood or other post material have come loose, causing gravity to pull the fence down. Another common problem is the gate post’s lack of stability. Posts can become loose and start to lean, or if they are wooden, they can even rot at the point where they meet the ground.

What are some common fence repairs?

The most common fence repairs are aimed at fixing:

  • Missing boards or slats. This is a common problem with wood fences.
  • Fence material corrosion. This occurs on metal fences like chain link and iron.
  • A sagging gate. This could result from a tilting fence post or loose hinges.
  • Post movement. Typically, this is caused by frost, corrosion or water.
  • Stains. Moisture and other elements can stain fencing, which may require a professional to remove it.
  • Warping. Warped, curled, cupped or bent boards are unsightly and less effective and need to be replaced.

If you notice any of the above issues with your fence, reach out to fence repair professionals near you to start getting cost estimates and schedule an appointment.

Should I repair or replace my fence?

Fence repair is better for common problems that only affect small areas, such as a broken picket or a shifting fence post. However, there is a rule of thumb to follow: If the repair project requires replacing 20% or more of your fence, it’s probably time to replace the whole fence. The exception to this rule is if the fence is fairly new and just part of it is damaged.

How much does it cost to fix a gate?

Gates can be more expensive to fix than other parts of a fence, and there are several reasons for this. The first is that gates are the only moving parts on a fence — hence they have more components that can wear out, as well as friction and the potential for rusting and sagging. Fixing a gate may require a total replacement or simply replacing certain components like hinges. Sometimes, the repair may involve fixing the surrounding fence.

What are some common gate repairs?

The most common gate repairs tend to be associated with a sagging gate. A gate repair professional will check the hinge system. If the hinges have come loose, they will detach the gate, set the hinges in the proper location and reattach everything.

Another common repair is replacing or repairing a sagging fence post by digging a new posthole and/or using a concrete footing.

Can I use digital payments to pay for fence and gate installation and repairs?

Currently, many fence and gate professional use common digital payment services like Venmo, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Zelle and more. Many more are quickly adopting the platforms as COVID-19 continues to force companies to digitally transform.

Contact the professional beforehand to discuss whether you can make digital payments, and take all measures to comply with social distancing recommendations. Compare fence professionals side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do fence installers offer remote or virtual services?

Because fence installation needs to be done in person, fence professionals usually cannot offer remote services. If you come across profiles that state they offer remote services, message the fence installer to see what those services include.

For consultations and meetings, ask the fence professional if you can coordinate a virtual consultation in which you explain the project to them through video, photos and drawings transferred online. If not, it may be wise to postpone the project and book an appointment at a later date

Andy and Hayden were amazing. A section of our fence went down and they came and gave me an estimate quickly. Estimate and repairs done within 5 days!! Very reasonably priced. Great workmanship and clean-up! They also checked and tightened other areas of the fence. I would highly recommend them! 😊

Although Shane didn't claim to be an expert in the repair I required, he certainly solved the problem very well. It didn't need immediate repair but he kept in touch to let me know when it would be done and he didn't charge the $500 minimum that the fence companies said they would charge.

I have actually called, hired and completed a project with GoKrub Handyman. I had a wonderful experience with him that mirrors other satisfied customers who hired him and gave him 4.8 ratings on https://www.thumbtack.com/. We had to repair sections of fence with new fence posts and completely turn around other sections to comply with Shawnee City Code because we had just completed building a swimming pool. Eric was honest. Eric was efficient. Eric listened to us as clients and did as we asked. I liked the straight forward per hour pricing + you supply your own materials (others try to get you on marking up material costs). Another thing I loved is he is an animal lover. This may be unconventional, but he brought his dog with him that he just rescued who has an anxiety disorder. He did not let it interfere with his job in the least. We didn’t mind and let him work with his dog in the yard (and I even went out and petted her several times). His dog was well mannered and had a great disposition. It reminded me of how Gary Lezak brings his dogs to work with him. I have to respect someone who has compassion for an animal’s welfare. If that is something that could be an issue for you then you might want to find someone who is jaded that charges twice as much an hour and marks up their materials. As this was the first time, I hired him; I did watch the time and he was right on about the hours he worked over a 2-day period. I will be hiring him again in the future when we need him. Without any doubt I highly recommend him. He is honest. He listens. He is efficient. He is reasonably priced per hour. He has compassion. His work is amazing!
