Sam Nabil is an outstanding counselor. He is both professional and relatable which is very comforting for someone who has not been to a counselor or therapist before. He is very knowledgeable and has shown great adaptability as different issues have presented themselves in our sessions.

I sought out Jeff when I was training for amateur boxing and needed a better approach to conditioning. He has probably the most accomplished career in Spartan races locally and knows, on a deep dimension, how to push people to new levels. His methods are unique, will leave you sore, but will also leave you feeling like you actually accomplished something and will make you noticeably better, in facets in and outside of your athletic career to your friends, enemies, mentors, and self.

I've been meeting with Karin for less than 2 months. Karin is friendly and professional - but more importantly, she will make you get things done. Come to coach with Karin and expect to work. After 2 months I'm thinking more clearly and I have more energy than I've had in years. Her style of coaching approaches the person as a whole: nutrition, exercise, stress, motivation, life goals, fulfillment at work, etc. Because of Karin my far-off life goals are starting to turn into real-time plans. Book some time with her - it'll be the best thing you've done for yourself in years.

I learned about Health Coach Zach about 8 months ago when I signed up for his Healthy Human Academy, an online course about everything related to health...body, mind and spirit. I liked what I learned online so much that I began making some big changes in my life. One of those changes was getting some actual health coaching from Zach. This guy really knows his stuff! He approaches health from a 360 view and he'll give you useable strategies to reach your health goals. I like Zach because his main priority is educating and sharing knowledge and he's invested in each person he works with...he's not a person who's just in business to benefit himself. He sincerely cares that you reach your goals and will hold you accountable so that you knock it out of the park. I couldn't ask for anyone better.

This review is based on my association with Christopher Hawley's career for nearly 40 years. It includes his roles in education, marketing, product development and design. I did not have a detailed engagement in each of these phases of his career, except for one, his undergraduate thesis in industrial design, which I believe established his purpose, scope and modus operandi as a professional. This yearlong project, which I witnessed as his academic advisor, was the culmination of the five-year program. It was a proposal for an innovative haptic approach to experiential learning in the primary grades. It included a set of hands-on playthings designed for specific mental stimuli. The thesis received a very favorable review from the faculty and a jury of design professionals to whom it was presented. It was unique to education in the US, at that time, engaged in educational reform inspired by philosophers and humanists like Maria Montessori, Jean Piaget, John Dewey and others. Christopher Hawley's proposal was uniquely tailored to Plato's philosophy--that education is based on freedom--avoid compulsion and let your children's lessons take the form of play. After graduation, he continued to develop his thesis, his philosophy, and the "toys" he invented, linking his theory of education with the goals of a democratic society and adopting this concept of social responsibility, in all it's complexities, as the dominant driver of professional service.

Jennifer was very personable and understanding to what I was going through. She helped me through one of the most difficult times in my life by learning how to deal with my boss. I was having anxiety about going into work every morning but I can now go to work and use what I learned in coaching so my boss does not bother me. Many thanks for her help!

I was really having a hard time after my job was relocated. I wasn't sure where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do. After talking with Ann Marie she really helped me narrow down what it was I wanted to do versus what I thought I needed to do and blended the two nicely. She is a game changer.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

    • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
    • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
    • Defining your career goals
    • Creating a plan for job searching
    • Improving networking strategies and skills
    • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
    • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
    • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

    Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

    • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
    • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
    • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
    • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
    • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
    • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
    • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

A career coach provides one-on-one sessions to help you reach your career goals or overcome any challenges you’re having in your career path. The cost to have career coaching can vary based on factors such as the number of sessions you purchase at one time and the experience and rates of your counselor. Career counselors are typically professionals who have earned at least a master’s degree in their field. Based on their academic background, supplemental certifications they have received, and any postdoctoral work they have done, their rates may vary. Typically career counselors offer reduced rates when you sign on for their services on an ongoing basis. A typical price range for career counseling services (nationally) could be $75-$150 per session. Remember to always ask if the career counselor offers a complimentary introductory session. You want to make sure the relationship will be the right personality and counseling style fit to help launch your confidence and upcoming career changes.

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

When it’s time to take your career to the next level, it’s time to hire a career coach. The cost to have a career coach help you with your professional journey will vary based on how many sessions you require, the level of coaching you desire, and the rates of the coach as determined by their experience, expertise, education and training. On average, career coaching sessions can range from 60 to 120 minutes, depending on the professional and what your needs are. Career coaches in smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living will also typically have lower rates than those residing in large metro areas like New York, although most do offer remote coaching. Many coaches also offer a free introductory consultation, which gives you the opportunity to determine if their personality and coaching style are the right fit. It’s helpful to ask the coach about their relevant experience and get references from former clients. Depending on the professional, session rates could range anywhere from under $60 to well over $250 per session. Package discounts are a good way to commit to the relationship as well as get savings on services.

    What is a career counselor?

If you’re feeling lost in your career path, overwhelmed, in need of a job but confused as where to start, or ready for change but uncertain what you want, a career counselor is a good choice for you. A career counselor is typically a licensed professional who has earned a master’s degree in counseling — likely with an emphasis on career counseling. Each state has different licensing requirements for career counselors, so be sure to research before reaching out to a pro.

Due to their academic backgrounds, career counselors often have a more holistic and in-depth approach than a career coach. Career coaches are not regulated by states and also tend to be more business-focused — a good fit for those who know what they want but need help achieving it. On the other hand, a career counselor provides guidance and clarity around some of the more emotional aspects that job hunting and career movement entail. Career counselors meet with you in a series of one-on-one sessions. They assess your personality and learn what drives you. They get a detailed understanding of your work history and your hopes, and often work to help you discover any internal blocks preventing you from going where you want to go. Hiring a career counselor is appropriate at any time in your career, from recent graduate to executive-level management.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
