Tim did some great work around our new house. He installed our dishwasher, fixed missing siding on our house and repaired some masonry on our chimney. Great pricing, timely service. Plan on using him more in the spring!

Hired to capture squirrel(s) getting into the attic of a rental house. James came out, gave an honest evaluation of the situation, set traps and then checked back daily. The price he gave was competitive with other wildlife removal companies, plus he was willing to coordinate with us so the repairs to the entry points could be made by our contract labor.

Eric created a "dog friendly" yard for me. I had found examples of this on the internet. Eric responded immediately to my request and listened to what I wanted to do. He asked for pictures of my ideas. The rain this spring kept him from completing the project in the agreed time, but he was there when he said he would be there. He and his crew worked tirelessly to complete the project as quickly as possible when he finally could get to it. I was very impressed with the results!

He was prompt, professional and reasonably priced. He installed an underground dog fence in a fairly large area. It works great. Cleanup was thorough. He knew his electrical work. I would definitely recommend to anyone.

Chad did a great job fixing a kitchen drawer rail that would no longer stay in because the back of the cabinet had pulled away. He was innovative, fast, courteous, and professional. After discovering that this was not a simple matter of putting in a bigger screw, he figured out an economical way to fix it permanently. Afterwards, he took time to offer me some very good advice on several other projects around the house. If you do not have a handyman yet, or if you are not happy with the one you have, you should contact Chad Hesler. Everything about his work was great -- he replied to my request online immediately, He let me know that he could come to our house within 24 hours. He was here when he said he would be here. And his fees are very fair and reasonable. He will not take advantage of you. We were VERY pleased and will call Chad again to help on a number of projects we need help with.

Cosmo was everything I could have asked for in a handy-man. He was incredibly resourceful about moving very difficult items. He knew sources for the gravel I needed. He offered to fix things I hadn't even noticed. I highly recommend him if you need quick, reliable work done in your yard or house.

My experience was excellent. CT McDonald put in a new driveway and retaining wall for me. The work was very difficult and the quality of the work was exceptional. CT explained each step of the process and went beyond what was expected. I would highly recommend them not only for concrete work, but any type of work you may need completed.

We called Shawn from Gateway to quote a facelift to our house that we we’re about to sell. He was the only contractor out of everyone we talked to that actually didn’t treat me like I was stupid and naive. We received a quote the day after we called him. We went ahead and agreed on a price and he was able to begin within a couple of days. He walked me through the process of how he was going to do the job and made me feel at ease. Within 3 weeks the job was almost complete As he had promised and everything looked great. I would highly recommend these guys for your next project. We will definitely be a repeat customer.

After moving to my new house, we needed some repairs. Fencing and decking wasn't safe for my Grandkids and my pets. Cody and his partner replaced several boards and re-leveled the entire fence. The rear patio deck had broken boards and exposed nails. Cody and the guys fixed it and made it safe for our family. They even build me a dog house! I couldn't have been happier. A+++

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
