I don't follow a proscribed routine. All students are treated as individuals and I want to accommodate them according to their musical tastes. It is not a job. It is my life's work.

I am teaching all ages. Degrees in both music education and early childhood education give me an edge when working with young children, though I enjoy teaching everyone, and have a good retention rate in my studio.

Thumbtack Spotlight

Bernie Schweickart

What do you love about your job?

I love what I do because it is not a job. When I am not teaching, I am composing or working out new arrangements for my students. Having been a professional player in all types of venues, from nightclubs to horse shows, has given me a unique idea as to what type of music people enjoy. In addition to my teaching duties, I perform several days a week at various retirement homes and am amazed at how music is able to brighten their day. A good teacher teaches from the heart, not from a book.

Who or what inspired you to start your business?

I was fortunate enough to get into the music business when it was possible to earn a living playing in local nightclubs. I have a wife and four children and never had the desire to go on the road. As a player, people were always asking me to teach them something on the piano. I started out at a local music store only to discover that their main goal was to sell musical instruments, where my goal was to be a better teacher. It was then that I decided to go out on my own, and luckily, between playing music at night and teaching during the day, I have been able to support my wife and now grown-up kids.
