Very professional and courteous young man. Was very patient to explain everything in detail making sure I understood the repair. I have already referred him to others. I am going to use him for other projects really soon. I recommend him highly. It's good to be able to call on an honest person that's not trying to take advantage of you.

Chad was so easy to work with. He made accommodations to get to my repair ASAP even though he was very busy. His rate was less than half the price of the other electricians I called. I have so much respect for his honesty and integrity. He educated me about the electrical issues I was having and did a thorough check of my breaker and outlets to make sure everything was safe and in good working order. I could not be more pleased with the experience and service. Highly recommend this guy!!

Ismail was a professional. He came out to give us a quote to seal our deck. I bought the sealer and he used his equipment to apply it. He gave me a date showed up and from what I hear had a few guys and knocked it out in a few hours. When he was done we paid him and the price was extremely reasonable. We noticed we would really like the bottom of the steps done which we said that didn't need to be done in the beginning. He came back and did the bottom of the steps and didn't charge anymore. We highly recommend My Design to anyone needing home repair or odd jobs done. We are going to use them to do other work at our home. They were also very clean and you didn't know they were here when they left other then the job was done way beyond expectations.

My house is 100 years old and had a terrible 7 foot crack in the original plaster ceiling. Cody was able to patiently make the repair without even being able to notice it. There were many complications, as a portion of the ceiling had collapsed, but Cody fixed it. He is an excellent guy to have on your project.

Josh Brooks from honey do handyman service did a fantastic job repairing my dimmer switch. Prior to the job, Josh contacted me several times to make sure he understood exactly what I needed help m to do. Throughout the time leading up to the actual job Josh kept in constant communication with me to make sure I knew when to expect him, and he called ahead prior to arriving. I consider this to be great customer service. During the repair, Josh explained to me exactly what he was doing so I was fully informed. After the job was done, and I might add very professionally, the price Josh quoted me up front was the price I ultimately paid. I could not have been more pleased with his work ethic, know-how and professionalism. I now have a go-to electrician for life, and I'm thankful to Thumbtack for putting us in touch.

Myron runs a tight ship. The job we hired him for was some drywall repair but after reading reviews and meeting with him I asked if he could do several other things so we could list our house. The answer was always, yeah we can do that. I never got the feeling he was trying to pad anything, he gave me honest feedback that a home buyer would and likely wouldn't care about. When it came time to do the work, he made sure his guys were always on time, they were professional, and very clean. This job was pretty big so the attention to the little details was nice. They had to come back out a couple of times to clean up some small things as drywall set but Myron never once complained and simply got it done. My ceiling looks better than it ever has. Ball Homes should hire him for the drywall work, their original drywallers clearly don't know how to take care of smooth ceilings like Myron's team does!

Mike Goldman is an outstanding professional. Mike brings over 20 years of hands on experience to building and repair projects. His dedication to the work had him fixing a drywall problem for me within 24 hours of being hired. His work for perfection included insuring proper paint and pattern matches. Mike was protective of the carpets using drop-clothes and ensuring no spills, He cleaned up thoroughly after himself, even leaving paint rollers and containers clean and ready to use again. Mike is # 1 on my speed dial for all future build and repair needs. Thank you Mike!!!

I had three windows with broken glass. One of the windows also had a broken glazing stop (trim piece). Before agreeing to the job I was told that the trim piece could be repaired too and that it was included in the quote. He did an excellent job on glass replacement. However, the trim piece was not replaced, and I was told he couldn't find anything suitable. Now I might need to replace the whole window - making the original repair meaningless for that window.

Bob Walker is a life saver! The drywall of my ceiling fell down while I was on a trip in Africa and Bob and I were able to coordinate its repair before I even came home. He did a great job and even came back to fix something that wasn't quite right. I trust him to get the job done with ease. I highly recommend him and will definitely be using his services in the future.

We needed to have repairs done to our bedroom closet--bifold door repaired and rehung, rods installed, knobs replaced / repaired. Mr. Jones was easy to communicate with and schedule. He arrived on time, assessed the work to be done, and determined what parts would be needed. We ended up providing him with the key to our condo, so that he could shop for supplies, complete another job, and return to finish our job later that afternoon. We went about our business and he called us when the job was complete. Everything looked and worked great. He also had to repaint an area around the closet track. His rate was very reasonable. We were pleased with his work and will definitely be calling him again to do work around our house. Highly recommended!

He was very professional and maintained a clean work space while in my home. He was early each day and had a little fun with my younger kids in the morning as i was trying ti get out the door. He was very efficient with his work and did everything he could to be sure the project was completed on time. I needed some repairs done around my house and it was a pleasure to have him do them.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

What does a property management company do?

Property management companies manage the rental of residential homes, apartments, condos, commercial spaces and retail spaces. Property managers can oversee just a single unit or many properties, whether those sites are inhabited full-time or are vacation rentals. A property management company helps a property owner or landlord find tenants; collects rent; takes care of accounting, property maintenance and repairs; handles on-site management; and manages vacation rental check-in and checkout tasks. Although many property owners or landlords successfully manage their own rental real estate, a property management company can help you handle tenant issues and maintenance problems, especially if you are not located in the same city or state. Most property management companies deal with tenants directly, and their tasks include:

    • Marketing the rental property
    • Collecting rent
    • Handling repair problems
    • Responding to tenant complaints
    • Evicting tenants

A property management company may be a good choice for property owners who have several investment properties, live far away from the rental property, or don’t have time for hands-on management.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

    • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
    • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
      • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
    • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Why is property management important?

A property management company can be a landlord’s greatest asset. As a neutral third party, the property manager handles the day-to-day operations of a real estate investment, from a single vacation home to a large apartment building or several rental properties. A property management company can be especially helpful to landlords who own several units and can’t manage each of them individually, or those who live too far from their investment properties to meet with renters and oversee maintenance. Property management is particularly important if your rentals are part of an affordable housing program. To receive financial assistance from the government, the landlord must comply with a complicated set of rules; property management companies should have both experience and expertise in complying with the rules specific to each housing program.
