"One job became two. A freon refill was performed, professionally and Anthony explained everything that he was doing. $250 dollars covered about 2.5 pounds of R22 refill and a 1.5hour visit. The second job was repairing a broken boiler. This is one of those jobs that could easily have descended into chaos because of the number of unanticipated issues and repeated visits to the property and to vendors. The job required care, diligence, resourcefulness, and, most importantly, pride in one's own ability to fix a problem. We had to replace 6 parts in a 15-year old boiler which is essentially a complete overhaul. To make things worse, one of the replacement parts was faulty from the vendor which made troubleshooting much more difficult. To get the job done, Anthony had to research the entire wiring diagram, and reach out to the manufacturer for technical help. The manufacturer replaced the faulty part at their cost because Anthony had exhausted all other sources of issues. A few things are exceptionally noteworthy. There were no BS explanations about anything. He explained what he knew and what he didn't know accurately. He reduced his estimates when he was able to secure the parts at a lower cost. Finally, I have no doubts that repair was even an option because Anthony was so persistent in his approach to solving the problem. My tenants even wrote to mention how professional and polite he was to them which is, of course, a huge plus as a landlord/manager. For one part of the job, he didn't want to accept a payment because of the continued problems that cropped up (none of which were anticipated or his fault), but I appreciated his tenacity enough to happily pay him more than he requested in the first place. He also accepted Venmo which is a huge plus. In short, I have no reservations about vouching for his work. The desire to do the best job possible and his personal stake in the quality of his work more than makes up for the perceived lack of experience due to his age."

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
