I'm very impressed with Stephen's quality of work. He replaced my field stone concrete steps with big slabs of granite and also tore up my walk way to install some new beautiful cambridge pavers. It didn't end there, he also ran sleeves for my outdoor powerline and irrigation system since those lines ran under my previous walkway. His pricing was very good and I plan to hire him again for future projects. I also get compliments all the time now from my neighbors when they pass by my brand new walkway :).

I had an apartment cleaned after a move. They were on time and worked diligently to complete the job. I would highly recommend them for any such work. And if they perform other cleaning task this well, they are destined to remain a success in the field.

I had the pleasure of meeting with Jeff Thompson and his crew who completed finished carpentry work in my historic home in Charlestown, MA. He began and completed the work as promised. Jeff has demonstrated his experience and skill level in his field. He set the bar high for all carpenters. I would definitely consider him for future projects. Thank you, Jeff.

Jon has done a great job on our field stone wall. His challenge was to terminate an old rubble style wall on either side of our new driveway. He used stone from our property. It looks very similar to the existing wall.

Bruno and his crew were excellent. They went above and beyond the original scope of work at no extra charge. Very professional and always responsive when I called. A trait not common in the construction field. I will call Bruno every time I have a masonry need.

Had a bunch of work done on our new lake house. Needed front stairs and walkway (cheap a$$) builder left flat field stone for entry way. Chris responded same day. Came out, gave me ideas and prices and what he suggested. Came out awesome. Also had new wall and stairs done out back. Would highly recommend this guy.

I had IntelliTurf installed in my 2200 sq foot back yard. I have two large dogs, and a number of shade trees so I never had more than mud and moss in the yard most of the year. I looked at a number of different products and decided on IntelliTurf due to the quality of the grass blade and the detailed proposal. It took the team about a week to install, including creating 3 french drains to improve drainage from the house (a pre-existing condition that I should have addressed previously). They were courteous and thorough. There is a lot of crushed stone and sand, so be prepared to have it dumped. I would recommend that you make sure you do not have chipmunks or moles living in your yard prior to installing- I had one living in the ground about 5 feet from the edge of the turf. He dug a channel under the turf to get in and out. I am going to have it fixed next spring now that I am sure he is no longer there. Overall I am very pleased and wish I had not waited so long to do it. I have gotten loads of compliments on the look and feel of the "lawn". Clean up is so much easier than what I had before. No smell, no browning of the grass, no puddles and no mud. What could be better?

John did work at my son's apartment in Everett last week. He put up window insulation panels for us. He was an absolute delight to work with from beginning to end. We made an agreement for where, when for how much... he showed up on time with a smile on his face and worked through the job until completion. I would highly HIGHLY recommend John for any work you have, large or small. His talent, attitude and reliability are unmatched in the field! Thank you John - until we meet again!

I hired Hummers Lawn Care to come mow my lawn for me that wasn't cut for close to a month, it was long and was a mess that needed attention, especially the field that is on my property. These guys came and mowed my whole yard, which is over 1.5 acres, in a little over an hour and it came out great! Can't beat the price or quality from these guys...

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
