Bobby from Robert Marchand Floors was AMAZING, start to finish! He responded within minutes of my first inquiry on Thumbtack, his price was fair and reasonable and he was beyond helpful in answering all our questions for our current project, as well as other projects we are considering doing in the future. He arrived on a bitterly cold day, so his normal routine of cutting tiles outside was not an option. Out of respect for our home, instead of bringing the wet saw inside, he cut each of the small subway glass and granite tiles by hand. He was neat, organized and meticulous with his work!! He was like an artist as he maintained the perfect pattern of our busy tiles, even though it required cut outs for the 7 outlets and light switches we have along our backsplash. Bobby was professional and friendly and we were Blessed to have him here to share his gift of artistry and craftsmanship!! We WOULD NOT HESITATE to call him, again, in the future, for any tile or flooring work we want to have done.

I booked the project with OSA just one week before I moved in my new condo. There are plenty of jobs needed to be done, like install all appliances, replace old vanity, replace all old valves, replace new toilet, install new lights, put floor tile and wall tile in my bathroom, and so on. Thankfully, OSA finished all projects before the day I moved in with high work quality, I really appreciate it. Also, they are very trustful, I gave my home key to them so they can come any time to do the work. I would definitely recommend OSA to all my friends who needs to do electricity, plumb job for their house or condo.

Manny and his crew are professional, reliable, courteous , honest etc. I can’t say enough kind things about Dubon Flooring. Manny was the 3rd company I hired to refinish the same floor. The first two contractors PNP flooring and Pro R both from Thumbtack did a horrific job and Manny was hired to correct their work. Third times a charm. The floors look as good as they can with what he had to work with. The finish is impeccable! I only wish we hired Dubon Flooring to start instead of paying three contractors for the same end result. Moral of my story, HIRE DUBON FLOORING if you want the job done correctly the first time and his prices are actually extremely competitive. STAY FAR AWAY FROM PRO R FLOORING and PNP FLOORING from Melrose MA. I personally would never hire another floor Contractor except for Dubon Flooring , thank you so much for all your hard work Manny.

Extremely impressed by Peter and his team. He responded immediately to my request and came to our home the next day to provide us with a printed up fair quote. He was able to work around our schedule and was professional. We had very beaten-up old, wide-planked floors from the 1800s, as well as two old staircases, that he and his team meticulously sanded down and brought back to original beauty. They kept the home clean during the process and were polite and kind. There are simply no words that can express how thoroughly pleased we were with his work ethic, determination, professionalism, cleanliness, and fair pricing. We greatly appreciate the hard work from PNP Flooring and highly recommend him.

We had LAN's Floor Care install hardwood flooring in our kitchen and family room after they removed carpet and tile in same area. We are very happy with the results and with overall service we received. The floors look beautiful and Lan was very professional. We had him give us a quote months in advance as we were away all winter but he kept his word and saved a time for us. We would recommend Lan to any of our friends and would certainly use him again in the future! Nancy and Jack Mac

I highly recommend Steve. Aside from his beautiful work, he engaged with us throughout installation of our walkway and granite steps. He made sure we always knew what was happening and felt comfortable before he began a new phase. We love the outcome and plan to hire him again down the road.

I posted a project on Thumbtack on Monday saying that I needed someone to install my wood flooring before Thursday and Wilson responded right away and by Tuesday night my project was complete. It couldn't have turned out any better. If I had another flooring project I wouldn't hesitate to call him back. He and his partner Oliver were very professional and hard working. The precision he used in laying the floor eliminated any need to use a quarter round to hide any gaps around the edges. I'm pretty fussy about the quality of work done in my home and these guys far exceeded any expectations that I had! Great communication, quality work, showed up on time and worked hard until the job was done (and cleaned up after they were done). What more could you ask for?

Quincy Floor Care turned our average, boring looking floors into a masterpiece. After purchasing our home we immediately wanted to stain the natural wooden floors a darker color. They were more than up to the task. I am looking at the awe inspiring shine of our stained floors and can not help but smile. They also installed flooring in our upstais after we removed carpeting. I give Quincy Floor Care my highest, most impressed recommendation. Thank you! -Ryan & Ross from Winthrop, MA.

I needed to have my garage painted and cabinets installed. The guys showed up on time and were very friendly, knowledgable and courteous. Their work was impeccable and they showed genuine concern for perfection. I also had a tile backsplash installed and my driveway pressure cleaned and both also were done perfectly. I will use them again in the future for upcoming projects and my husband and I highly recommend this company. Homeowners in Sanford, Fl.

We hired Carlos to lay down a new floor in our basement, which required doing a full skim coat on the entire existing floor first and then laying all the new VCT tile. Carlos purchased all the supplied, and moved around some of the heavy furniture that we were unable to fully get out of the space, which made the whole project incredibly easy for us. He was responsive to every text, did the whole job in less than a week, and every night left the space cleaner than he found it. If we ever have flooring work again, Carlos will be the only person we call!

We needed a couple of our wall-to-wall carpets stretched to take out some wrinkling. Hanson Floors performed the work and did an excellent job. We are very pleased with the results. They were easy to work with, arrived on time and completed the job within the timed that they estimated. They cleaned up well after completing the job, too. I recommend Hanson Floors for any flooring needs.

Jose and his partner did an exceptional job on removing my kitchen tiles, cleaning up the subfloor, and installing the prefinished wood. What separates these guys from the others I’ve worked with is their honesty, value, and reliability. They showed up exactly when they said they would and backed up any further materials they needed to buy by providing receipts. In the end, the quality of their work was fantastic. If you live in the Somerville, Medford, Arlington, or surrounding Boston area, I highly suggest you hire these guys.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
