We had a house party that was for about 35 guests and we hired Daniel for the catering. It was the best decision we made! The food was amazing, from the hot appetizers to the main courses (chicken, beef) to the variety of desserts- it was all delicious. I couldn't believe how many guests commented about the food and the presentation. And the presentation was certainly unique- he served the entrees in giant martini glasses so that we could stand and mill about while holding food. Fantastic idea. Daniel first came over to our house to check out the layout and kitchen and we went over the menu and how we were going to set everything up. This helped to make sure that everything on the day of the party went smoothly. He had a server (his daughter) and she was such a huge help and worked very hard. Together, they took care of everything related to the food - everything! All the food was fresh and cooked right in the kitchen so we weren't eating reheated food. They not only cooked here and served, but they took care of the clean up and packaged and put away all the extra food for us. They took all the stress away from planning a party and we were left to enjoy ourselves. We had so many people we hadn't seen for years that it was wonderful to just relax and enjoy the conversation and food with them. I can't recommend Daniel highly enough. We would definitely hire him again!

John catered an in-home 80th birthday party for 25 people this past weekend. All the food was excellent and well-presented - beautiful stationary displays and the passed appetizers won raves. John was very easy to work with, very professional and very helpful in crafting the menu. I knew what I wanted for the most part, but he helped me hone in on the perfect amount of food. We had enough food that the anyone could come back for seconds or thirds, but not an insane amount of leftovers that would go to waste.

William catered our family style wedding reception for 170 people at a private venue and we could not be happier. Not only is the food he cooks amazing, the service he provides is second to none. Prior to reaching out to William, we had been working with another larger, better known, and well-reviewed catering company. They turned out to be entirely unhelpful, unwilling to offer alternatives to help keep our budget manageable and did not take kindly to any requests outside their standard menu and offerings. After eating the deposit on our first caterer, we gave William a call and he provided the exact opposite experience. From our first phone call until after the event was over, he was wonderful to work with. He helped us with crafting a menu, determining alcohol volume (we had a backyard wedding), cocktail and reception layout, and even timeline. He was always very quick to respond, made extremely helpful suggestions, worked around our schedules (and held the tasting in our apartment), accommodated changes to dishes to make sure we got exactly what we wanted, provided more food (and rentals!) for far less money than other caterers we assessed, and had an extremely professional service staff. After it was all over, he put some leftover food in our fridge and my wife and I were able to enjoy it again for dinner the following night with a bottle of champagne. If you're looking for a caterer that really cares not only about the food that he cooks but also about you and making your event amazing, you've already found him.

I work for a large apartment community. We decided, very last minute, to host a catered BBQ for our residents and were scrambling to find a caterer with about 2 weeks to pull everything together. I managed to find Lori on Thumbtack and she was immediately very responsive and professional. She set up a great menu for our residents and gave us an unbeatable price. The day of the event, there was a little miscommunication on what time we were to start (this is why I did not check punctuality, I wanted to be honest, but also emphasize that it was a misunderstanding and not just her staff showing up late). Her staff got here with less time than planned to set up and start cooking and they FLEW getting everything set up and ready to go. In the end, we were only behind by about half an hour and no one seemed to really notice or mind. The food was delicious, very high quality, and her staff was amazing, very efficient, kind and professional. I cannot say enough good things about this experience and would highly recommend Lori for any sort of catering event. She knows how to take care of her customers! Thank you so much Lori for making this a memorable event for our community! If we do decide to cater another event in the future, we are definitely coming back to you!

My fiance and I hired Claudia at That's Tasty to cater our wedding of about 50 people. Claudia was warm, friendly and extremely helpful during the entire process. She was the only caterer who offered a sample tasting for our (very gourmet menu) of beef wellington and mushroom ravioli. It was so tasty! Everything at the event went without a hitch, and the food was simply delicious. All the guests were impressed, even the ones who ordered the gluten free/vegan entree (winter squash, stuffed with risotto and pine nuts). Claudia was also able to provide an option for the two kids at the wedding. If you want a tasty, gourmet meal, provided with professionalism and warmth, you should call That's Tasty right away. You will be impressed. Fernanda & Andy

The Business itself is one that is very well organized, providing top shelf services, as it pertains to hospitality, quality of the food, which is the taste and quantity (getting more for your dollar), also delivery of services was overall impeccable and indicative of the way food services use to be by way of excellent services! The owner and founder, Anthony Caldwell reflects all that leadership and excellence of service should be. He is a man with a vision. When you meet him, you can tell that he has a higher calling than just a business man. He is a man who is connected to the people and connects the people to humanity, using his trade, paired with experience and knowledge of culinary arts. The name 50Kitchen and his motto or slogan, Beautiful food for Beautiful People is so apropos. So I would invite anybody and everybody to at least sample one of the best tasting food menus in Massachusetts and adjoining states. Yours truly Donald Rankins

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
