Eric is a conscientious and pleasant person in nature to deal with. I have found him professional and highly skilled. I had described the issues I was having prior to his arrival and planned on a certain scope of work to be done. After Eric reviewed the situation I had, he was honest about not feeling the need to replace something that didn't really need replacing. Not many contractors would reveal that and just replace to charge more. We had a glitch or two with scheduling and timing of appointments, but we worked it out. Eric has integrity and does the right thing. I will definitely hire Quality Repair Services again.

Everything you could ask for and more! I usually never write reviews, but when it comes to hiring people and it companies to do work I felt important to share. We all know how difficult it is to find a good contractor. Elsayed came out on a Sunday and worked tirelessly until the job was done. Installed 3 toilets, dishwasher, garbage disposal, 2 faucet fixtures. Also corrected numerous plumbing issues in the process. From start to finish he let me know what was going on every step of the way. His recommendations were spot on as he came across other issues throughout the project. I always felt confident everything would get done right and did it ever! Never strayed from the up front and honest pricing. I’ve already rehired Elsayed to do more work in my home as OSA is a full service general contractor. Hire with absolute confidence!!!

I had a chimney cricket redone and some general repairs to my roof. Weathertite responded promptly, came out the next day and did the work as agreed. James and his sons were a pleasure to work with. The work done carries a 10 year warranty and I am happy that they stand behind their work.

As a retired General Contractor having built hundreds of houses over more than 20 years, when I was asked to return to Massachusetts to remodel a home for my daughter and her family I found that most of the people that had done work for me in the past had retired and were no longer available. I needed to install 700 sq ft of prefinished 3 ¼” Maple flooring and the time line was very tight so I turned to other resources to get the job done and that is where I found Wilson Silva of GREAT FLOORING AND PAINTING, REMODELING INC. I explained to Wilson that I needed the job done ASAP and he offered to start the job 2 days after I spoke to him and promised to have the job completed in 2 days, all at a price that was very reasonable and better than all of the other companies that responded to my request. Wilson showed up at the site on the day that he said he would and to my surprise was able to finish in just one day! He told me that he knew that I needed the job done quickly so he brought extra help, staying to the agreed upon price. As for the results, the job came out great. Everything looks tight and straight. He took the time to make sure that everything was done perfect. In the 20 plus years that I have been doing this type of work I can honestly say that Wilson is one of the most professional, honest subcontractors that I have had the pleasure of working with. I highly recommend Wilson Silva and Great Flooring and Painting, Remodeling Inc. Do not waste your time searching out other hardwood floor installers, you have found “The Guy”!

Stella turned an existing upstairs bed room into a bathroom. Work was done well overall, and it was a pleasure working with Erik. I especially appreciate his ability to reply to e-mails and texts within minutes, something that most other contractors I vetted for the job couldn't manage in days, or in some cases, not a all. Stella was very helpful in the planning process, and managed all the permitting/inspection work with ease. I would definitely recommend them.

I needed somebody to build and install a custom floor-to-ceiling sliding door to split my room when I want it. Not too many contractors will take a job like this requiring out-of-the-box thinking, but Joe did. He came up with a solution that saved me hundreds on the material cost and submitted a quote that I could not refuse. And I’m glad I’ve hired him. That was my best contractor experience ever (and I worked with dozens of contractors on different projects before). Joe and Frank worked as a perfect team complementing each other and coming up with the best course of actions. Joe would reply to any text message almost immediately, answering all the questions I had for him. The project was done as promised, on time and on budged. Thank you, Joe and Frank. I would recommend Speranza & Son to anyone who needs a job done professionally, efficiently, and with minimal headache.

We own a 1920's colonial. When we purchased the house the walls were original, in very bad condition and had not been painted in many years. Over the past 10+ years Troy has restored, repaired and painted the walls and woodwork in every room in the house. He takes pride in his workmanship and attention to detail. He's methodically patched holes, cracks & imperfections in our old walls. The time spent here was far more than the actual painting. His at times slightly higher estimates have always accurately reflected the hours spent prepping the surfaces. Last summer (2016) Troy acted as general contractor when we did a major remodel of our very large & in bad shape 4 season sun porch. Again, we were thrilled with the end result. He was available and responsive when an inevitable (but minor) miscommunication arose between myself and the electrician. He worked quickly to remedy the situation. The room was transformed to a comfortable space that my family enjoys everyday

I hired Daniel and his company for changing the floor(From Carpet to Wooden) and overall house painting. He came and visited my place and provided the estimates. We both went to Home Depot store and picked all the required materials. He initially committed to complete all the work with in 5 days and he completed within the time frame. He used to start the work everyday at 7 AM and work until 6 PM. He is economical, professional and punctual. He did great job in doing the painting(Walls, Trim and Ceiling) and finishing was really great. I strongly recommend Ortega Brothers for General contracting.

They concentrated on MY job, MY schedule and MY ideas. Kept me abreast of work schedules, are very considerate, are very family oriented (both mine and theirs) and were very flexible. Happy to have them in my home. Very strong work ethic. Helped to coordinate other contractors work. (Also people you would want in your home.) Quite satisfied with their work. The room is lovely!

Adonias was very easy to work with. He is friendly, creative, and flexible. He has a very busy company, so sometimes my projects took longer than expected, but he is good about communicating. Eagle7 remodeled two bathrooms for me (I will upload pictures after I finish cleaning and organizing them). They took out two fiberglass shower/tub units, built a new tub with tile surround and a tiled walk-in shower with glass door. They replaced sinks and countertops, replaced flooring (tile in one, vinyl plank in the other), repaired some plumbing, replaced fan/light combos, and built out walls where needed. In addition, Adonias and his crew helped with a few extra requests as they came up, without complaint. We were updating most of our house this month, so there were many contractors in and out, a dog, kids, and general chaos. The crew took it all in stride, they were patient and worked around our schedule. Prices were very reasonable, and they worked with me to think through what could be salvaged/reused to minimize costs. Adonias also sourced materials as needed, not overbuying or upcharging. Highly recommend Eagle7.

Jon removed my old retaining wall and stairs and built me a new one in about a week. What I like most about Jon is that he built me exactly what I asked for and nothing less. He didn’t pressure me into purchasing higher quality materials or try to increase the scope of work for his benefit as all the other contractors had. He showed up and did the work without me ever being home and charged a reasonable fee. What I hate most about hiring a contractor is the idea of paying a large sum of money to a random guy who showed up to your house promising the world only to never hear from him again. That obviously was not the case with Jon. I honestly don’t think he asked for a dime until a large portion of the job was complete. If you want someone that will show up, do the work at a reasonable price, and always return your call, I recommend Jon.

XCC did a perfect job installing my hardwood floors in two large rooms. There were lots of complications with rooms being out of square, un-level surface around the fireplace due to mortar, and border patterns with different wood, and insets. All of it came out perfectly and with very little wood waste (way less than other contractors would have done). Xavier and his crew also did a great job replacing my damaged sub-floors throughout the entire house - a task that no other contractors were willing to take on. Xavier and his crew always worked hard and are very pleasant to be around. They have wide knowledge and skill sets and are willing and able to do anything you might need. No lazy-bones or burn-outs in this crew!

As one does, or should rather, I met with several contractors before meeting Paul; and none of them quite matched Paul’s personality and easy-goingness. Paul and his crew, particularly Joe, worked diligently, respectfully, and smartly on our front deck. We used high-end products, in which Paul has much knowledge with, as well as having the courtesy to talk us through each step of the build. Supreme Home Improvement came in under budget, but by no means whatsoever does that equate to the work being inferior, not at all, as Paul completely and utterly transformed our pitiful outdoor deck to an oasis in our home, and all done with proficiency and astuteness. When conversing with Paul, his down-to-earth and honest character will shine through each and every time. For me, that was a true bonus. To add, I would most certainly hire Paul and his team again. Thank-you!

Russ and his team was a pleasure to work with. He was very responsive to my inquiry (leveling my floors for a floating wood installation) and even adjusted his projects to fit my tight timeframe. He provided tips for other renovations we are doing throughout the house and even allowed up to borrow tools needed to do so. we have worked with several contractors over the last few weeks and Russ by far was the more professional.

This was one of the best Home Remodeling experiences we have ever had. We worked with Ely Jimenez of Del Cid Design and Construction. Ely does the best workmanship we have ever seen. He is wonderfully communicative and professional. He provided us with photographs of every single detail that he worked with. He was very flexible, patient, and creative. He transformed our old-fashioned bathroom into a beautiful, modern bathroom. He somehow fit a large, working washer and dryer into a closet. He is an excellent general contractor who works well with multiple sub-contractors. We 100% recommend Del Cid Design and Construction for any home remodeling task, no matter how big or small. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

For more on where to start when remodeling a bathroom check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
