I requested a quote Friday night, received a response back within 5 minutes and Joel arrived the next morning on time. Very personable. Laid out the options in an organized manner. Installed the water heater the same day. Assuming no issues with the installation (time will tell), good experience overall. Now time to take a hot shower!

I had Marvis replace my water heater in my rental property. He was able to pick up the water heater from Home Depot that was pre-bought and bring it to the property and install it. He had great response time. I would use his services again.

I replaced my original furnace, AC and water heater at my condo with Edward at A&M Services. From start to finish, it went exactly as you would want any transaction to go. Edward was responsive, prompt, and friendly. He kept me in the loop of the status of everything going on. He handled the job with great care and made sure I was pleased with everything. Overall, it was a job well done all around. I highly recommend A&M Services!

We had a new heating system put in as well as a tankless hot water heater. They also upgraded our electrical panel and put in an electric baseboard in our foyer. The guys were punctual, extremely professional and knowledgeable. I recently had an extremely experienced contactor come through for an unrelated project and he said the work that Three Brothers did was some of the best that he had seen in years. I am more than pleased with the outcome! Highly recommend!

Let me first say that I'm a new home owner of a house with a water heating system I know nothing about and it wasn't working in the morning. I called and he offered to come in a couple hours. Meanwhile, I realized I had shut it off because the red shut off switch was next to the kitchen light switch. I turned it on and all was well. He didn't have to fix my system but he did come and schooled me a bit about my system and answered all my questions I wanted to know. He didn't even charge me for coming out on a weekend morning. I will use him again if and when my system needs real repairs.

We are very satisfied with Ray’s service. He responded quickly to our call and came the next day. Another place was giving us 2 weeks to replace our water heater and I’m so happy we found Ray! He was punctual, friendly, and super helpful...answered all my questions and gave advice on other plumbing issues we had. Highly recommend and will definitely be calling him for my other plumbing needs. Thanks Ray!

Lee was responsive, knowledgeable, and kind. He did the routine maintenance on our five year old boiler, that we did not realize we should have been doing annually! We will definitely call him again next year---or sooner if other plumbing needs arise. He also replaced a corroded pipe on our water heater. The timing and price were great! Thank you!

We hired Chris to complete a washer/gas dryer install in our basement. A lot of plumbers gave us the run around on the install and advised of solutions that would not meet our needs for our old house. Chris suggested an install that was in line with what we had wanted. He was able to complete the job at a lower cost than all other estimates. Chris showed up on a time and communicated any other issues along the way. We purchased our washer and dryer after the initial install and Chris was able to come back and complete the hook up for us. No more laundromat trips for us!

I was frightened and apprehensive about the day my furnace would decide to go to the furnace Cemetery. Well that day happened on Friday October 13th. The furnace clearly malfunctioned and I was forced to replace it. On that very same day I use Thumbtack to locate a technician, in less than 72 hours I had been contacted by Mike at TopKnotch, had an appointment scheduled and had a brand new furnace and thermostat installed. It was absolutely painless, definitely affordable, and literally one of the most positive experiences I have ever had with a home repair.

We had a 22 yr old water heater that we wanted to replace. Artie was 1 of 4 plumbers to respond, with a desire to see the project before giving us a quote. He assessed the project and gave us a detailed list of items that he would do to execute the work. He communicated the problems and solutions clearly and thoughtfully. And so, within 48 hours, we had a new water heater! We were happy to hire Artie and would recommend him to others. His pricing is reasonable for the expertise he offers.

I am a remodeling contractor assigned to bringing a vacant 2 story house up to building code on the North Shore. The property had been abandoned before winter and caused severe water damage from frozen pipes. Several radiators, hidden pipes in the walls, water heater and heating system were all destroyed. Christopher was very patient and methodical in presenting a workable plan. And his price was quit reasonable. I deal with many trades people and Christopher is without hesitation now on my "A" list. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.
