Todd did a wonderful job at revising an academic essay in the humanities to be submitted for publication. He never misunderstood what I wanted say. Also, he works fast and efficiently. This was my first time relying on someone I did not know, and I was uncertain about how it would work: but worked it did! Thank you Todd. Julia

My experience with Ian was SO delightful... I am a bit older and recently decided to go back to college. I hired Ian to help me with college essays.. He has a great background and such a creative writer. In addition to the essays he offered to help me with my resume knowing that colleges will also request that. I couldn't be happier with his service!!

David was absolutely amazing in helping me articulate just what I wanted to say to my sister on her wedding day! My sisters and I had the idea to make our speech into a poem for our other sisters wedding day. I am not a very good poem writer, however, David helped me take my thoughts and put it into a poem! He was extremely quick in his responses, flexible with making changes, and so beyond easy to work with! I highly recommend his professionalism and his creativeness!

I contacted Sara on craigslist while searching for someone who could help me with editing my graduate school application essays. The application was due about 3 days after I initially made contact with Sara. In any case, I could not finish my drafts by the time I told her I would due to a family emergency. I was frazzled and discombobulated. About 6 hours before it was due, she edited and proofread 2 of my essays. She paid keen attention to detail and stayed up late in the evening to make sure I could get these in on time. The finished product was flawless. She goes above and beyond for her clients!

Of the five choices that I had, Susan was such a godsend in my time of need. She helped me iron out my ideas and offered word suggestions that made the story of my life leap out from the page. She refined my thoughts and helped with the technical editing that I struggled with. This essay was one of the most important pieces that I had to write and after hearing Susan’s initial thoughts and ideas, I trusted it into the care of her hands. Susan was also great because she offered different price plans to work within my budget. Finally, she also worked within my tight deadline. But if you give her more time she can help with research and possibly run your work by specific industry professions for feedback. I strongly recommend Susan when you need someone to help bring out the best of you through your writing.

Laurie assisted our son in preparing applications for college. Specifically, she assisted by providing guidance in identifying colleges, in Essay writing, in preparation of the college applications and tracking the submitted applications. We could not be more pleased with the assistance she has provided to us. I would highly recommend her to any parent who is looking for a way to navigate the college selection and application process.

I had the pleasure of working with April on my college essay a few months ago. I submitted my original piece to her and within a day she returned my work with several helpful notes and suggestions. After a few drafts, she helped me piece together a perfect paper that truly expressed all the parts of myself that I had attempted to get across in my original draft. So far, I have been accepted to every college I've applied to. April is so much fun to work with and I am SO thankful that she was available to help me. 5 stars for sure, she knows what she's doing.

Writer/editor of biomedical science manuscripts, dissertations and grant proposals. Data analysis and presentation. I work closely with clients to provide integrated science writing and illustration. Interaction and review of drafts by the client are key to providing the best finished project. I prefer to consult with clients near their place of work in metro Boston, so that I can get a sense of the nuances of their projects.

I’m a freelance writer/editor in the Boston area. I was a reporter at Computerworld, an information technology magazine in Framingham, Mass., for nine years. I am the published author of five true crime books “Murder at Morses Pond,” “An Act of Murder,” “Ripper,” “Bone Crusher,” and “House of Lies” for Kensington Publishing Corp. (Pinnacle imprint). I have a BA in English from the University of Massachusetts and I’ve been a journalist since the late 1980s. I’ve written for, and done proofreading and copy editing/editing for a group of community newspapers in the Boston area, where I covered politics and was a high-profile investigative reporter. I’ve also freelanced for the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald. I’ve edited a variety of manuscripts including fiction, memoirs and biographies and I’ve written investigative stories, eBooks, press releases, IT blogs, IT white papers, FAQs, IT case studies, Web site copy, health-related articles, “green” articles for an eco-friendly website devoted to luxury goods, and real estate/home improvement articles. I currently manage and edit a blog devoted to data analytics. I've written about cloud, data recovery, SaaS, security, etc. I’ve also done editing and proofreading for a group of high-end magazines in New Jersey. I’ve written for a high school textbook publisher and I’ve ghostwritten/edited business/technology e-books, self-help books, health/nutrition books, novels and several memoirs/biographies. I’ve also written a novel from a screenplay.

Hi! I am an academic, an editor, and a professional writer. I specialize in part in editing projects for international scholars. I also specialize in writing clear, engaging blog content for all kinds of audiences. I pride myself in delivering projects by the deadline. My experience is in editing scholarly manuscripts, but if you have other deliverables I am more than happy to take on miscellaneous projects. I have a strong writing background, and I produce feature articles for various companies. My editorial experiences range from working at publishing houses to editing literary journals. I have experience with Word, Excel, Adobe, and PPM. Please provide me with any criteria I need to know and a style guide, and I'm your editor! Scholarly projects excite me. I love proofreading and editing academic articles, but I'm open to editing any projects.

For a lower fee than our competitors, we offer the best editors that money can buy to our clients. There is no catch. When you submit your essay or other manuscript through our website, an automated computer system matches an available editor in our database with your paper, and the computer system does all the busy work, allowing the editor to spend more time actually doing what you are paying for -- editing your paper! This allows us to keep costs down, while providing the best service. Its simple to say, but really hard to do. This is what makes us unique. Adding value to our clients words, and getting rave reviews in return.

While I'm obsessive and thorough when it comes to removing errors, I'm also in love with the flexibility of language and feel that every project has its own distinct personality. I am aware and adaptable, always conscious of the overall tone and focus of a piece to ensure it represents you and your needs. I love working with people, discussing and assessing their individual needs, and ultimately delivering a product that exceeds their expectations. I love the moment when a client exhales, smiles and realizes the work is done and done well.

I have experience with journalistic forms (from a career at The Boston Globe), with academic communications (as news director, writer and editor at Brandeis University and Boston College), and with B2B communications (freelancing for McKinsey & Co.). Having traveled extensively during my years as a foreign correspondent, I am familiar with scores of countries and issues around the world, and am adept at working with people from different cultures. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

    • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
    • Strong writing skills.
    • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
    • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
    • Expertise in your target area.
    • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

    • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
    • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
