Steve was great to work with, very professional and prompt. He did an excellent job building/installing a fence with a gate and a new screen door for us. I took his advice and everything came out better than I had hoped. I highly recommend his services and look forward to working with him again.

Raif and his partner did a fabulous job assembling and installing a basket-ball hoop and a 30 foot guard net in my driveway. After they had finished the job, I asked them to install some floating shelves in my family room and they gladly obliged. They are a great team and I highly recommend them. I will definitely hire them again in the future for more assembly/handyman work.

Mark is awesome! Had him replace my water heater and he was courteous and helpful from the beginning, even thinking of things I didn't (like if my neighbors would be okay with him parking in the driveway). He worked with me to find a water heater that would fit perfect with the old vent. Would 100% recommend him to anyone and will definitely call him for other things in the future.

John was great! He responded quickly to my inquiry and came over the next day to address a range of electrical issues (fixed back porch light, fixed motion detection light, fixed a light switch that wasn’t sitting properly in the switch box) and other random needs ( e.g., fixing latch on backyard gate, fixed a bedroom door latch so the door could close). What I really appreciated is his explanation of everything that he was doing. He even ran out to pick up a piece I needed from Home Depot. His pricing was fair and work quality was great. I will definitely use him again as my go-to electrician/handyman. Thanks John

I needed to have my garage painted and cabinets installed. The guys showed up on time and were very friendly, knowledgable and courteous. Their work was impeccable and they showed genuine concern for perfection. I also had a tile backsplash installed and my driveway pressure cleaned and both also were done perfectly. I will use them again in the future for upcoming projects and my husband and I highly recommend this company. Homeowners in Sanford, Fl.

Mr. Thompson provided an accurate and reasonable quote for the requested work, which was to replace a bulkhead door and install some landscaping railroad ties. The work was done in a matter of days and the site was left clean and free of debris. I am very satisfied with Mr. Thompson's work and have recommended him to friends and family.

I hired Anastacio to install an in-ground hoop backboard system. He and his brother George were communicative, punctual, knowledgeable, experienced, and prepared. The project was a two-phase multi-day process involving mixing, pouring, & curing >7 bags of 80lbs. cement mix bags after digging a hole over 3ft deep & 18inch diameter. They positioned the stable footing with great care, next to a still-warm brand new 2-car wide asphalt driveway. My boys, wife, and I absolutely love the driveway hoop setup! It would be a great pleasure working with Anastascio & bro again! Hire him ASAP.

Jeff Marrazzo of All-Star Remodeling and Painting beautifully re-finished for us a very large back hall with enormous built-in cabinets. He repaired the ceiling, covered the walls with new paneling and painted all. The area is now transformed! He is a very fine carpenter and painter. He is meticulous about his work yet very efficient and very neat. Also, he's a very personable, clean-cut man who was very easy to have around the house. I learned he has many skills. We will happily engage him again when we have various future needs. (He really liked our indoor Burmese cat and was very careful not to let her outside, as he was in out so often cutting panelling in the driveway.) Maureen O'Halloran, Newton Center

He also removed roof line moss via power washing the affected areas and even went so far as to power wash soiled siding and grant entrance way to my home. Great guy, great job and will definitely hire again for more home improvement projects!

We contacted Oddballz to inquire about their pressure washing services. Upon comparing them to two other local companies we went with Oddballz based on price and detail of work offered that the other two companies would charge extra for. Oddballz arrived on the date scheduled on time and ready to roll. Joshua, the owner of the company was friendly and clear in expectations. We walked the house again and he noted trouble spots that I had concerns about. He asked that we close all the windows and he began his work. He spent half a day pre washing, rinsing, scrubbing, and final rinsing. He addressed all trouble spots with ease. He even cleaned out the gutters while he was up by the roof. Joshua was beyond competent and did an amazing job. The neighbors were surely jealous how nice our home looked After this thorough washing. Joshua again walked or home with me and pointed out all trouble spots that were not any trouble for him at all. He asked if the job was completed to my satisfaction to which obviously I replied YES! Joshua clearly takes pride in his work and that his clients are happy when he is finished. We have already hired him back again to work on some interior small jobs as well as patching up the driveway. I cannot say enough about this small company and dedicated owner. Don't hesitate to call him. No job is too small. In fact he is going to my elderly fathers home next week to install a light fixture and tighten up some cabinet knobs that my dads arthritis prohibits him from doing. AAA++++ Oddballz is amazing! Thanks again!

Great job at a great price. I love the retaining wall and concrete walk Fernando and the team at Disere construction did at my home. I needed a retaining wall to keep water from running into my driveway, even in the dead of winter they came out and built more than just a functioning wall, they created art! We couldn't be happier!

I needed a same day snow plow service for the big storm on Sunday. I put the request in on Thumbtack and Corey Patterson replied in minutes. His price to do my driveway was very fair and he came later that evening to plow the majority of the snow off of my driveway. He came the next day at 5:30 in the morning to clean up what had fell over night. He did an excellent job and, as a result, I hired him to plow my driveway for the remainder of the snow season.

Jay installed a chandelier for me above my stairs. Although it was a tight spot, he managed to get through the project. He was professional and patient, even after running into a few snags. He did both the basic electrical work and demo/finish work. He even saw a small issue with our gate as he was leaving and fixed it free of charge. I would use Jay again for handyman work around the house.

Great! We had new baseboards Installed. Arrived when they said they would. Did quality detailed work, were very neat, took care not to affect other areas of the home, by using drop cloths. Cleaned, swept the driveway and vacuumed the home when they were complete.

Our experience was great with Thom and Cumberland Fence. The process was quick; Thom met for a home visit to inspect the site for our small fence project, discussed options and our desired result, took measurements, and gave an estimated cost. Because our project was relatively small, +/- 35' w/two gates, few fence installers would respond. We replied the next day and the turnaround was within a week. The installation took a few hours, involved working with an existing wood fence, cutting into asphalt, and creating two different sized gates. We wanted to close in our yard for our dog, while giving our 1920s bungalow cottage a fence that would compliment it. The end result: a great looking fence, clean installation, and overall quality. Thom and his crew are professionals. Will recommend!

DJ installed a new fence and gate in my yard and did an excellent job. People could easily pay 5x the amount we did for his quality of work and professionalism. He was knowledgeable, hardworking and extremely flexible with scheduling. He will be our new go to for any upcoming projects. Hire him! You won’t regret it!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
