My son is a 15 year old in Honors Algebra II at Worcester Academy. He never had much trouble with math in the past, but this class was challenging him and his grades were slipping. Oliver really helped him to fill in the missing parts of his understanding and to feel more confident. My son really liked Oliver's approach and enjoyed his tutoring sessions, and his grades improved significantly. Oliver is very easy to work with as a parent-- he is responsive to calls and messages, understanding about schedule changes, and is very generous with his time-- we scheduled for an hour, but Oliver often stayed longer when he was really engaged in his teaching. I would definitely hire Oliver again for my kids.

I have received help with multiple writing assignments in school, ACT tutoring, and supplement and college essay help. I do not know what I would do without Lisa! She has helped me go from a B english student to an A student. She has also done a great job working with me on my supplements and college essay. My english teacher and college counselor loved them! For my ACT scores, she helped me get a 33 on my first ACT in the reading section and helped me go from a 24 to a 35 in the english section.

For the past year, I have worked with Ms. Lisa Kay on multiple subjects: studying for the SAT/ACT, and working on my college application essays. With her variety of tricks and strategies, I have developed skills to do well on these tests. Although I struggled with grasping certain subjects in the beginning, Lisa has been very patient and helped me understand why I got questions wrong versus how many questions I do. Sometimes, when I was frustrated with the practice test I took, she would always reply to my emails and calm me down, keeping me motivated and thinking more positively. Over the course of this year, she has helped build up my self esteem/confidence for test taking, and now I feel much more comfortable with the SAT/ACT. She is very rational and realistic: she always speaks the truth and will make sure that her students improve one way or another. Although her tutoring sessions are only once a week for about an hour each, she can be easily contacted via Skype, email, text, phone call, etc. I know for sure that whenever I have questions, she will always be there to help, and without her, I have no idea where I would be right now in the college process.

FRANK TO THE RESCUE!!!!! This was hands down the best tutoring experience ever. Frank is patient, fun, and incredibly smart (Harvard grad doesn't hurt!). He knows the mistake you're about to make before you even think about making it as he has an uncanny ability to pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses with laser precision. This gift allows him to focus on what needs to be improved and he wastes no time getting to it. Frank absolutely SAVED me before my calc midterm. Linda has tutored two of my sons over the last five years. My older son was able to improve his SAT scores as well as perfect his college application essay. He got into his first college choice. My younger son had problems expressing himself in writing and started working with Linda in 8th grade. Later he studied with Linda for ACT and got into his first college choice. Overall I was impressed with Linda's professionalism, great energy and great rapport with kids. They loved studying with her. In addition I could always rely on Linda being up to date on latest changes in SAT/ACT tests, which was tremendously helpful last year. We all feel very fortunate to have Linda as our ' Language Coach'.

When I originally signed up for my August GMAT test date, I was planning on self-studying as I could not afford to spend thousands of dollars on private tutoring. However, after a month of studying I hit a wall and was still 40 pts shy of my target score. This is when I begrudgingly decided to seek out help. When I saw Cambridge Tutoring's listing on thumbtack, I was extremely surprised (and a bit confused) to see 1-on-1 GMAT tutoring offered at such an affordable rate. Any skepticism I harbored initially was immediately washed away after my first free intro session with Karthic. I could tell he really knew the ins and out of this test and would be able to get me to my target score. After just 5 sessions with him, I was consistently scoring above my target score on practice exams and finally felt ready for the exam. I highly recommend Cambridge Tutoring to anyone who wants fantastic test prep at an affordable price.

I am writing to recommend Julie as an English or Math Tutor. Julie is an excellent and knowledgeable teacher with experience working with high school students. She is strong in both writing and math, achieving an 800 on her math SAT exam. Julie is a recent graduate of Washington University in St. Louis where she tutored students as part of a program called “Books and Basketball STL” in the St. Louis area. In addition, she tutored English and Math while abroad in Tanzania and Peru. During high school, Julie tutored Geometry and has knowledge of advanced mathematics due to her coursework while at Wash U. Julie is patient, relates easily to students and achieves great results with them. I highly recommend Julie for any student looking to improve their skills.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

    • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
    • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
    • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
    • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
