Steve has been helping us with some long-needed home repair work. He has re-screened our porch, replaced our corner boards on the home, cleaned out our gutters (up three stories in the back, and then hopped across the roof!!!), replaced the downspouts, replaced some clapboards, and is currently replacing sills and window trim on all of our windows. His work has been outstanding, and he is the nicest gentleman, always polite, knowledgable, and helpful with providing cost-saving pointers. I have already been recommending him to others, and am looking forward to having him back to do some interior work for us in the Fall.

I needed someone to remove a bunch of broken items like TV's, a/c's, windows, etc. The quote was good and we agreed on a price. Joe arrived on time ready to go. He was easy to talk to and was gone in a few minutes. He would have been gone sooner, but he helped out my elderly neighbor who came out and asked if he would take her door.

I had a hole in one of my dormer windows patched. Billy was extremely professional and accommodating from our first conversation to the end of the job. He did a little bit of extra work that he felt was necessary and still kept the cost of the job at the same original cost that we discussed. I would hire him for other jobs in the future. It was nice to realize that I hired someone as professional, dependable and dedicated as Billy.

I had Joe put in a new front door and two new windows. He sat and discussed the project with me and listened to exactly what I wanted. He and Frank were punctual, very professional and did a fabulous job. They also made sure everything was cleaned up each day. I would highly recommend Speranza & Son. It was a long time since I renewed the look of my house. I decided to start with the doors from the outer part of the house. Went to UBrothers. I really liked the prices and the samples, which were presented by Andrii, that I decided not to stop only on doors. I really liked the options of windows that they manufacture. Later he informed me about the dates when everything will be done and the prices. I was happy when I saw the results. Windows and doors not only look stylish but also safe. Master Andrii knows how to listen and really knows what his job.

The job was for a 9 window replacement which was completed in one day and took a few weeks lead time. We took advantage of the owners expertise and was visited by the onsite manager for a remeasure. We have them installed and there have been no problems. It seems a lot changed since we last replaced windows and the owners, partners were both available to inform us of all our options. They both explained things well. I would recommend this company wholeheartedly.

K and S were great! Requested the work on a Friday, came out the next day to look at the windows being replaced and completed the work the next two days. Great quality and super fast and inexpensive. They were also very personable. Only good things to say about these guys. I wouldn’t have sold this house without them and the fixes they completed from the inspection! Very very professional. Moving out of state and it will be a shame not to be able to call them for more work. Thanks so much guys!

Paul did an amazing job on a whole house of replacement windows. Home had lead and extra precautions were necessary to ensure the property was safe during the replacement and for the inspections. Paul and his team handled everything very professionally and the job was completed on time and on budget. I Highly recommend.

We knew from the start we had hired a great group! We did our roof windows siding doors and deck! We could not be happier with the outcome or with the service we received from everyone! Our neighbors compliment us all the time about how awesome our home looks! Michel was amazing!! He came every week to see how everything was progressing! He was always available if I had any questions! He had great vision of what the finished product would look like and are we glad for his expertise. Michel's crew were awesome too. What a bunch of respectful polite and knowledgeable guys! We would highly recommend Marine Home Improvement! You will be as happy as we are!

We've done business with JP construction even before they started their own company. They did a complete reconstruction of our downstairs bathroom, and kitchen. They did built-ins, a fireplace surround with mantel, and removed a closet in the family room. The upstairs bath was remodeled. They repaired the deck and replaced the stairs. All the outside doors were replaced and some waterproofing done. They replaced all of our windows and installed a bay window. The roof was reshingled and ridgevent installed. And last but not least, the insulation in the basement. They're family. If I could get them to Florida for work I would.

I have used Debrito Painting on both a residential and a commercial basis and in both endeavors the work done was hugely superior to anything I might have expected. Painting done at my office, Nichols Insurance in W. Concord, was done with extreme attention to detail and we were afforded every courtesy to work around our work hours so as not to conflict with clients coming and going. The work was done flawlessly. The same attention to detail was given to my home painting needs and the finished result was beyond our expectations. At all times this firm was easy to communicate with and agreeable to our every request. I would not hesitate to recommend them to any consumer with utmost confidence. C. Nichols

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
