Fantastic service! I work in Real Estate and needed an apartment I rented to be spotless and Marcia went above and beyond. She provides her own supplies and charged what was quoted which was extremely fair to others in the area. It was well worth every penny. Cleaned, organized, on time, and communicated well on what needed to be cleaned. Baseboards, windows, a ton of dusting, I can't say enough! I highly recommend her to anyone looking for any type of cleaning service.

I would highly recommend John for your home repair work. He was punctual for the estimate and came right at the time he said he would for the repair work. He was reasonably priced and I felt he was honest. I needed a few boards replaced in my deck which had rotted. The work he did was quality work and exactly what I asked for and he didn't try to up-sell which I appreciated. I would hire him again and will recommend him to others.

I hired Joseph Speranza for both interior and exterior work. To replace gutter and siding, repair entry door canopy that had fallen off due to the bad wnter. To replace entry and storm door and fix wall all damaged due to the winter, as well are replace outer window sill. They did a great job. It all came out very nice and I couldn't be more pleased. There did all the repairs within the time framed they had promised and cleaned up nicely when they were done. I would definitely hire them again!!

Mike was phenomenal. In addition to being smart, highly trained, and competent, he was such a nice guy and the type person you feel comfortable doing work in your home. We hired him to install a large window A/C unit and connect a washer/dryer. I had another job need after agreeing to have him come out (movers had not put together a king bed properly after a long distance move), and Mike was amicable to going above and beyond setting up the bed frame as well, for a very reasonable charge. He had to customize a support piece as well due to unlevel flooring in our old apartment. I cannot recommend Mike highly enough! Lastly, and a great trait for a handyman, he appears to be a perfectionist!

Mark Dubois's Custom Carpentry did an amazing job finishing our basement. Our new space includes a 3/4 bathroom, game room and workout area. Mark even designed and built custom built-ins, making the final product exceed our expectations. Mark was in constant communication, prompt, neat (always cleaned up before leaving) and did high quality work within our budget. We also hired Mark to replace two exterior doors and repair some cracked floor tiles. Highly recommend.

I had a pleasure of hiring Russell for home floor repairing job (engineered hard wood). I would highly recommend Russell for such carpentry work. Based on this fantastic experience, I would consider him for other home repair/installation jobs (gutters, storm door, etc). I had a buckled (peaked) floor due to the seller/installer not leaving enough gaps at the edges to account for expansion of hard wood during summer. I had about 6 estimates, and by far, his pricing was the most reasonable. While most people charged per job, Russell quoted me an hourly rate. Some more reasonable than others. A few were flat out reluctant to do the job, due to its small size (maybe thought it was less profitable) despite the full day needed for its completion. By giving me a ridiculous quote (similar pricing to a new floor installation), they implied they didn't want to work. The job required removing the moldings from the impacted walls, removing all of tiles, then laying them again from the problematic area. He sticks to the quote and to his estimated time. He has a good pace and doesn't linger to buy time. Also, I found him to be very personable. The job was done to the utmost satisfaction. If you want an honest, hard working man to look after your home repair jobs, this would be the guy.

Gary and his team at Symphony Home Improvements were absolutely awesome! I was a little nervous to have such a big (for me) project done, but they were able to answer all my questions, and really put my nerves at ease. All our questions were answered right away, Gary was there to answer all our calls and we were never left wondering what or when anything was happening. Timing was great, earlier than I had expected! Window install and removal of old ones was super fast and thy cleaned up great! I would not hesitate to use Symphony again when we need to replace more windows!

Completely professional and personal experience! Walter was courteous, on-time and, most of all (in my opinion), very communicative and transparent in his work. He kept me appraised of everything he was doing and was very patient with my questions. They did a roof repair and, while he was at the house, he also did some light drywalling and painting. I would highly recommend him and his team.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
