Luis and Shane were very responsive, arriving the day after I reached out to find a handyman for some plumbing issues in my home. They handled 4 issues in about 2 hours and I was satisfied with their work.

I cannot rave enough about working with David. I found him originally when he responded to an ad that I placed on craigslist. Newly single and having no experience in home maintenance, I was faced with a bunch of projects that I could not handle on my own. He was not only attentive and punctual, he did a phenomenal job. He brought tools, experience and quality that I have yet to see from anyone else. He has now done work on every home I’ve owned since. I referred him to friends. I’ve had him to travel to my vacation home to do work there. I honestly could not recommend him more. He has done everything from simple Faucet replacements to electrical to plumbing to wiring my home theater to tile work to hanging artwork to building bed frames. He is a treasure.

Had some plumbing problems in the shower/bathtub. Mark Came over the same day to look at the problem. I was expecting to replace the whole fixer which means cutting whole in kitchen to get to the pipes. One look at it he said its in good shape just need a few parts. Came back the next day with the parts and fix it works like new. Very knowledge, very nice person to work with, everything spotless when he left. Great price. Could not be happier WILL HIRE HIM AGAIN IN MY SPEED DAIL. Steve

Chris was a pleasure to work with in the replacement of my kitchen garbage disposal. He navigated unanticipated speed bumps professionally and despite the added time to the project, he completed the job in its entirety to ensure I had a functioning sink when he left. I would definitely work with this company again for future plumbing needs.

John was very informative and professional. He was also very fast to respond and beat the competition hands down when it came to pricing for dishwasher installation. I feel like he might have had to do a bit more work than expected and he still charged the amount of the initial quote. I was very happy with this. I had a few questions in regard to the installation and he answered them with ease and an apparent extensive knowledge. I will definitely reach out to him for any future plumbing needs as well as recommend him as the first stop for any friends.

Really loved that they gave email updates thru the entire process and were transparent in pricing. Provided clear explanations on what my plumbing issues were and offered varied long-term solutions. Reviewed some past plumbing done by someone else and gave recommendations for that as well.

One word to say how we feel about T.K. Biggs Construction Company. Amazing. Phil helped us in our home from painting our entire house, he installed a brand new double door, Phil got to our electrical and plumbing issues within minutes. His company installed hard woods, repaired our dryer vent and tiled our entrance way beautifully. The man is simply wonderful. We will hire him back come spring to paint our kitchen. When you find a good man such as Phil who knows his stuff, you never let him go.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
