We were extremely happy with the paint job M&M Painters did in our new home this past week. When we moved in, the wall colors were dark and different colors in each room. It took three coats of paint (plus primer) to get everything to the white we wanted. Marco and his team worked quickly and efficiently and thoroughly so that we could get everything painted before we moved in. They also paid attention to details - they patched holes in the walls, fixed a broken door lock, covered up the places in the ceilings where lights had been removed, removed and threw out the old ceiling fans, painted the heating system and all the outlets and light switches to match the walls, and more. They also did an excellent job of cleaning up after the job was done. We are so pleased with the look of our new home - Marco and his team saved us a lot of time by taking care of every last detail. It looks spotless and perfect and we would highly recommend their work!

As a contractor I hired Laura to provide my clients with some assistance in choosing the right color pallete for their home. She was punctual, communicative and very professional. Besides saving me time, she affirmed my clients of their decisions. I'm very pleased with her service as well are my clients. I'm looking forward to working with Laura for years to come.

I had several painters come and give me quotes, but I knew Sarah was the one as soon as I met her. She was delightful and friendly and didn't talk down to me. As a single female homeowner, trust me, that's not a given. She had great reviews and a Facebook page with loads of pictures of beautiful painting jobs. And her prices are an outstanding value! I had one huge room, basically double height with a loft, and I wanted an accent wall. It had paint with an awful textures finish that needed to be sanded down. I also wanted the trim and the railing on the stairs to the loft. So three colors, two stories, and a 15x25 bedroom with walls had n.

January 27, 2015 Heidi helped us with designing and decorating my living room area and the upstairs wall space. This project encompassed purchasing products and furniture, supervising the installation, and making the finishing touches. Heidi is incredibly talented at ‘pulling the space together’ and executing on the home owners’ vision. She is incredibly thorough and creative- we had several art pieces that did not fit in standard frames and custom frames would have taken too long and expensive. She created borders with different color to create a dual border frames and the art and photos look amazing. Another thing that impressed me about Heidi is her ability to recommend various items at different price points and recommending where I should spend a little extra for quality vs. where I don’t have. The finished living room area and the walls look amazing and we highly recommend Heidi. We will definitely be making personal recommendations to our friends and family if and when they need this type of service. Kristie F.

Linda helped me design my office and I couldn't be happier! It is warm and inviting and so tastefully done. I had no idea how to use different colors and textures. Linda suggested some wonderful ideas and placed things in a way I would never have thought of. She even surprised me the next day with a unique silk curtain for my glass door that tied it all together. Linda transformed my room into a beautiful spa like atmosphere where my clients are able to relax and let go. It makes me so happy when my new clients comment on what a beautiful office I have. I would highly recommend Linda for any room or office. She will amaze you with her keen eye and elegant style!

Tess was wonderful to work with on our bathroom renovation. She has a magical ability to draw out your own design style, making the process interesting and engaging. For our bathroom project, Tess developed a design plan that was consistent with our goals for an ocean inspired room that would fit into a very traditional house. Tess helped us select a color scheme, designed tilework and a wainscoting treatment that work to create a lovely cohesive look and integrates beautifully with the rest of our home. Additionally, Tess helped me shop for fixtures and floor tile. It was such a pleasure to have someone with me, to keep me from being overwhelmed by all the choices! I loved working with Tess and recommend her highly!

Carolyn came highly recommended! Over a span of several weeks, Carolyn oversaw and helped me with the color management and lighting design of a three room renovation. Carolyn achieved all of the design elements I had hoped for with her intuitive design sense. Her lighting choices successfully transformed our rooms into a seamless combination of function but more importantly, style! Carolyn's work improved the quality of our living environment; our rooms no longer felt cramped or too dim. In addition to Carolyn's design sense and purposeful application, I was most impressed with Carolyn's sense of time management. She successfully juggled multiple tasks, anticipated and overcame the unexpected, and worked tirelessly throughout my project. Through it all, Carolyn stayed calm, focused, and timely. I would highly recommend Carolyn and look forward to working with her again!

Is it possible for someone to transform rooms by only looking at photographs? Pam Wilkinson has the ability to do just that. I decided to make over a couple of rooms to surprise my husband while he was away at a conference and due to the time crunch, Pam only had photographs to look at. She asked all the right questions regarding color, lighting, room size, ceiling heights, etc. Her advice on color, textures, appropriate window treatments, accessories transformed my very boring rooms into rooms I now show off to everyone! Her ideas also saved me money because she knew where to get fabulous pieces that look extremely expensive, but were very affordable. Pam has great ideas, impeccable taste, and is such a fun person to be around. I need her to come transform all the rooms in my house.——Sharon M.

I enjoyed meeting and working with Lauren. She had great color ideas for the rooms I am doing work in. She did say she would send me the colors she picked via email sine she did not write them down. I'm still waiting for them. All went very well.

Our experience with Mike was very positive throughout our exterior painting project. He was tremendous help with color and paint options. The preparation was careful and thorough, much more complete than other painting companies we've hired in the past. The paint was applied with meticulous attention to detail and the quality of the result was by far the best of three times we've had the house painted.

Dianna's artistic skills brought my rooms to life! The walls became bright and welcoming. Rugs of cheerful color shades, comfortable chairs sporting attractive coverings complemented the very suitable sofa. Rounding out for a finishing touch are charming lamps and end tables. A narrow dining room space offered Dianna the challenge of selecting an attractive useful shelving unit. To tie this together she selected handsome chairs with custom fabric at a space-saving table that can expand to seat eight allowing plenty of elbow room. The area became a spectacular arrangement with the additional of a beautiful window cornice that coordinates with colors in the room. Dianna's friendly personalty and eagerness to please the customer makes working with her a pleasure. Dianna takes time to learn the preferences of the home owner and offers options to suit the budget and personal preferences. When a customer wishes to consult her Dianna responds quickly. It was a most happy experience to have Dianna as my designer. Because of her guidance my home is a very pleasant place to be!

John Maciejowski is the ultimate, talented professional. We recently gutted and remodeled both a master and guest bathroom. John created the look we were going for and the bathrooms came out great. He listened to what we wanted, took us on store and factory tours to pick out the marble, granite, tile, fixtures, vanities and paint colors. Everything fits together so perfectly. We love the outcome. John is very detailed and follows through on everything. You would be wise to pick John for your next remodeling or refurbishing project. We have worked with John 2 other times to refurbish our living room and bedrooms. The furniture, artwork and overall color schemes have always come out first rate!!

I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to meet Tara during my remodeling project. She used her expertise to choose tile for 2 bathrooms. I picked a kitchen cabinet and then Tara choose a slate backsplash and a coriander countertop that goes wonderfully. Then she choose all the colors for my home. At first I was a little apprehensive but I decided to TRUST the professional. I moved into my home today and it is AWESOME!!!! I am going to have Tara back to help with the rest of my decorating. I have already referred Tara to several of my clients. Tara makes the big decisions seem easy..... P. S. My contractor had already brought another client by to see Tara's work.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

      • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
      • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
      • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
      • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

      • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
      • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
      • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
      • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
