I was very pleased with the grooming service provided by Cathy. She consistently responded to me leading up to the service within 5-10 minutes. She arrived 15 minutes prior to the designated start time to give herself time to set up and prepare. She took her time with my dog, Maizee, who's only 4 months old and was very patient with her during her very first grooming! The best part was that my pup didn't even have to leave the comfort of her own home which eliminated any stress or anxiety about getting groomed! Also - I was able to get things done around the house! It really was a win-win! I would not hesitate to hire Cathy again. A great value for the services that are provided in the convenience of your own home! Thanks, Cathy!

This took my a while to post with my crazy life, but Jennifer came to our house last winter to help deal with an aggression issue with a dog (not our own but of a relative) and our new baby. She went above and beyond to help us, and it was more like a therapy session than dog training! That said, it was clear she knew what she was doing with both the other dog and even with our own usually bouncy dog who greeted her politely. We hope to some day hire her again.

Peter was a great trainer. He arrived early in the morning and we immediately set out to train my three month old puppy. He uses a lot of positive re-enforcement methods and showed us how to begin training a puppy. He gave us the basics and demonstrated how to use them. He's very patient and knows how to get into the mind of dogs! He also gave us a lot of tips on how to potty train, discipline, reward and followed up with me the next day. We have already seen results in many areas. I would highly recommend Peter to help you with training your dog or puppy

Theresa is doing great job on training my dog. She really loves dog. I can tell that she is fully engaged in training dogs. She treats dog as her little baby. I am very glad to have Theresa as my dog's trainer. She is patient and responsible. Both of I and my dog have learned a lot from her. Sprite learned to sit, down, and leave things. She becomes a polite puppy and starts to listen to my instruction. Although sometimes she is still a little bit hard to control, she had learned more that I have expected. I would like to keep touch with Theresa and let her teach Sprite more lessons. I am very appreciate for what Theresa have done.

My husband and I chose to work with Lisa after communicating with her via email and meeting with her in person. We could easily tell she has a love for working with animals and the experience to back it up. We chose to work with her because of her experience with our particular dog breed, the location and surroundings and the incredible price offered. Our 10 month old puppy completed her first week with Lisa and has shown improvement. Our puppy's breed (Rhodesian Ridgeback) is known for their stubbornness, "make me" attitude and are distracted easily with their hound noses. We agreed with Lisa that another week would be appropriate for our puppy. I'm sure other breeds that are less stubborn may not even need more than a week. We are confident our puppy is in in good hands. We also greatly appreciate knowing we have a local contact we can reach out to if we need advice in the future about our puppy's habits or just the breed in general. I would highly recommend to anyone that has problem areas with training their dog or even if you are starting early with your puppy and would like your puppy to be trained for basic obedience skills.

My Pyranese had an issue with leash pulling so bad it caused a shoulder injury. Steve had her walking normal within the first 15 minutes of our session. My dog didnt know the word NO now she does. I was amazed with his results. He is punctual and quick responding if you have issues during your homework training. He was so patient to give me verbal instruction through the phone while I was struggling with an issue. He does high quality work and worth every penny. Would absolutely rehire him if I got more dogs. Amy St. Jean

I adopted my 2 year old dog Kayla only 3 months ago and Mike, along with help from his 2 wonderful dogs, has helped us reach several milestones: teaching her to get in the car, introducing her to the dog park experience, learning to walk on the leash, and most importantly, building up my confidence so I can help Kayla build up hers. I highly recommend his services.

I have been working for lucky dogs daycare for about a year and a half. My experience with lucky dogs has been a great one. We are still a growing business and are building up our facility to be the best it can be. We are a full service daycare facility, but we also do boarding, training, grooming and we have our new retail shop with all sorts of goodies for your pups. I love being able to bring my dog Buffy in for a groom. She's older so she doesn't care for daycare, but she loves coming to Lucky Dogs for a good pampering by Jane. All of our groomers are great at what they do and our experts in their field. They have been grooming for many many years. The best part about working for lucky dogs would have to be the dogs. We have a really good group of dogs that come pretty much everyday. At lucky dogs your dog isn't just another name on a list, every staff member has their own favorites lol. And throughout the day each dog gets some one on one attention with their favorite staff member and vice versa. We take the time to get to know each dog and their behaviors, and try to cater to each dogs individual needs. So we can ultimately have a safer group of dogs to play with each day. We also have a really good group of staff members, some of them have been here for a couple years and a few have been here a little less. We really don't have a high turn around rate for staff like with most daycares. So our staff and especially the dogs are like family here.

I was extremely nervous about dropping my dog off with a stranger. Lucky for me, it turned out that I was able to watch videos of Becca (our trainer) training other dogs for weeks before I dropped off my girl. Throughout the two week board and train, Becca answered every single text from me, sent videos and pics and kept me completely updated on all aspects of our pup's journey. During the transition period, she spent 2.5 hours showing us everything that Nala had learned and made sure that my husband and I could operate the equipment, use the same commands and elicit the same reactions from her. Becca was patient, extremely knowledgeable and quite obviously LOVES dogs. I am looking forward to seeing how far we can take our smart pup now that we have a better understanding of how to work with her. THANK YOU!!!! You all are the BEST!

Noelle was great! We came to her for aggression and destructive behavior, and she surpassed everything we expected. We got Riley back a whole new dog!! She came to our house during training and coached us through her training process. We could not be happier with her and the care and training of our dog. I'd give her 6 stars if I could!

We couldn't be any more pleased with our training from Ken at Caliber K-9 and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for training for their dogs. We have a 4 year old Boxer mix named Wrigley who started nipping at our 8 and 11 year old children about the time that I got pregnant. With twins on the way, we needed a solution for our dog quickly. We interviewed multiple trainers including a few very highly rated trainers in Boston. We were told a variety of things about our dog including that the only option was the put him down. My husband and I were at a loss of what to do and didn't have a good feeling about what anyone was telling us. And then Ken came over for a free evaluation. He was the only trainer to focus on Wrigley just as much as us. This made a huge impression on us, along with Ken's approach and dedication. We decided to hire Ken on the spot without needing to discuss it privately. I'm writing this during our fifth week of training and our dog isn't even home for good yet. I hope this shows how much we would recommend Ken. Wrigley was a challenge for him due to the "squirrels in his head" and his lack of drive. We feel confident that we will be able to take over when Wrigley comes home and continue onto a better path with Wrigley in our home. Ken has boosted his confidence, addressed many handling issues, taught him obedience and taught us and our children how to continue the work at home. Wrigley came home for a night's stay this week and things were great during the trial run. The other trainers sold an idea of a guaranteed fix and then would send your dog home. This just wasn't realistic for our situation. Ken has offered to keep Wrigley for an extra week at no cost in order to have a smoother transition when coming home. We've also discussed additional ways that Ken can help us in the months to come including helping me take Wrigley to an anxiety-fueled vet appt., boarding Wrigley when our twins come and helping to introduce Wrigley to the new babies. Also, the one-on-one attention that your dog would get with Ken is far and above what anyone else is offering! I feel like Ken could double his price and still be worth it compared to the others we interviewed. We feel so incredibly fortunate that Ken was available when we needed his help. He's also a friend now for many years to come. You won't be disappointed in hiring him.

Working with Paws N' Learn Dog Obedience has got to be one of the best decisions I've made thus far. Some of the things I loved was the punctuality, professionalism, the work quality and much more. I just got a puppy and the training I got back was remarkable. Even my dog that I got a while back got some tips and tricks by the best herself. Also, if you have any questions it's always a response as soon as possible. Never was I waiting for too long to hear back. I would 10/10 recommend this to anyone!! Trust me you won't regret it.

Jocelyn, owner of JW Pet Care, has been working with our family since the week we brought our Labrador puppy home. The thought of leaving our “baby” with anyone else, especially a person who we did not know, seemed unbearable at the time. When we first met Jocelyn, we were immediately impressed with her strong knowledge base, impressive experience, and most importantly, her comfort level and warm, natural interaction with our dog. Jocelyn’s innate love for animals shined through immediately, which really calmed our nerves! Jocelyn has consistently provided great care. She arrives within the requested time frame, feeds, plays with, and loves our dog! Each time she visits, she sends at least one, but often several, photo or video updates. What a comfort it is to know that while we are at work, our dog is receiving so much attention and TLC. As a business owner, Jocelyn is responsive, professional, understanding, and fair. I appreciate her flexibility and willingness to work with our constantly changing schedules. I have never felt like this is just a business to Jocelyn; this is her passion. We feel blessed to have found her.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
