We enjoyed having Wendy and Bill as our caterers for our night of fun with friends. It was the perfect kickoff to our Memorial Day weekend. There was plenty of delicious and unique foods to taste. We had awesome wine and beer pairings as well. All of our guests enjoyed everything. We absolutely recommend trying their services!

Jen Royle, the owner of Dare To Taste, was amazing to work with and I highly recommend her and her staff for any of your catering needs. She was a pleasure to work with, easy to contact and always responded quickly. She is professional, down to earth and most importantly her food was amazing so much so that all of our guest wanted her business card! We had an issue at the banquet hall with electrical outlets. The hall was very rustic and I was a nervous wreck but Jen and her assistant rallied on and our guest never even realized their was an issue. Jen worked great under pressure and we could not have been happier with the way she handled our event, I would hire Jen again in a heartbeat!

For more than 15 years I have been involved in fundraising. I have worked with dozens of caterers over these many years and I can confidently say that Cristo's Kitchen and Catering is the best that I have worked with. Outstanding service, detail oriented, professional, delicious food, honest and a great guy. Highly recommended and I look forward to working with them again.

Daniel is fantastic to work with! We used his services recently for a family reunion for 40 people. Every detail was looked after from start to finish. We started the evening with Daniel's famous cosmopolitans - DELICIOUS!! The cocktails were accompanied by a variety of appetizers but the big hit was his signature salsa made with avocado, pomegranate and kiwi - sounds odd but it was AMAZING!! We had a buffet selection for dinner and dessert and it was flawless. I can't say enough! Everything was wonderful and Daniel's expertise was clearly evident throughout every stage of our event from the planning to the execution. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

John and his team were very professional!! They performed duties beyond their scope because my event planner wasn't doing her job. They all-in-all were instrumental at making sure my guests, myself and husband were well taken care of, from bringing water and a platter of food out to us when pictures were being taken, communicating with our DJ in a professional manner which in turn prompted my DJ to make a public announcement on how spectacular J & L Catering was. If I hadn't mentioned, the food was fantastic. I had great reviews from my family and friends for days/weeks. I would whole heartedly recommend John of J & L Caterers for all weddings.

My company has used Hostess Catering for dinner 4 nights a week for over year. They are flexible, professional, creative and dependable. It's very hard to satisfy a large group every night with many different tastes, diets and eating habits. These ladies always come up with a fun menu every week that appeals to meat lovers and vegetarians. Hostess even catered our Holiday Party in December of 2014 and did all the planning from menus to table settings to waitstaff. They worked hard and I looked like a Super Star! These women do a knock out job and no job is too big for them to handle.

I think it is a resounding testimony when guests at a party are taking a photo of a persons business card during an event. Everything William did was impeccable, and made himself totally available during the event. I would (and will) recommend William to anyone that ever asks me about potential caterers for any event. I have no faults whatever to highlight, I'm sure that if I asked William to mow the lawn as part of festivities preparation that he would have done it without question.

After initially using thumbtack.com to assist with our search, we hired Heidi Mazzeo of Wilder Cuisine to be our personal chef for a recent family dinner party. Heidi was very helpful with planning the food selection, timing, etc. The results were excellent! Heidi prepared and served several appetizers that tasted great. Salad, entrees and dessert were served right on time; and were all delicious. Our family was able to totally relax and enjoy our time together, knowing Heidi was handling everything. We all had a great time thanks to Heidi. Ray; Norfolk, MA

I found Malone Catering on Thumbtack while assisting my son to find a caterer for his wedding. When I first saw the menus and prices I really thought I had to be misunderstanding, His prices are so reasonable that I could not believe he was in any way related to other wedding caterers. It seems that all wedding services have a 4X markup and we really needed to stay within a very frugal budget. I called Chef Marty and found him to be very easy to work with and very accommodating and I sent his info to my son immediately. The wedding last Sunday at Camp Kiwanee was beautiful and the guests raved about the delicious food. We had requested a buffet style and Marty and his staff did the serving. Absolutely wonderful. And I cannot say enough about his staff. They were so unobtrusive I never noticed them clearing after dinner but they did an incredible job. And every one of them was friendly and helpful and seemed happy to be there. I know my son and is new wife were extremely pleased with Malone Catering. We will not hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a quality caterer at a reasonable price.

I am happy with the help I have gotten from Shamia. She has been able to plan my wedding on a very tight budget. I can’t wait to see the final presentation. I think I knew from the start that Shamia was the person that was meant to make my day special.

Sam and his staff catered our nonprofit organization's annual Sandra K Russell Derby Day Benefit for MitoAction a few weeks ago and it was beyond amazing! Our attendees and staff cannot say enough great things about the Merrimack Event team. From start to finish, Sam was polite, attentive, and efficient. He worked with our budget and understood the complexity of the event. Sam went above and beyond to help decorate the event venue beautifully and of course, have his chef design an out of this world Southern Fare dinner menu to match our event's theme. Everyone was so pleased with the delicious food, and has told us out of the 8 years we have hosted this event - this one was truly the best. We cannot wait to use Simply Elegant Catering again next year! Thank you again Sam and team!

Amanda catered my wife's 40th birthday party, and she did an exceptional job! She worked with me to create a menu, providing me with a number of different options, including options for guests with dietary restrictions. The food and presentation were great, and our guests were raving about it days afterward! Amanda also was a big help during the party, replenishing the hors d'oeuvres and drink dispersers, refilling plates, cups and napkins, and then cleaning up the kitchen afterward. Amanda took care of it all, and I didn't have to worry about anything! I would highly recommend her for your event!

Kendra catered a 50th birthday dinner for 80 people. Her food was outstanding, beautifully presented, and absolutely fresh and delicious. Her attention to detail was noticed by all my guests who immediately took her card! The beautifully presentation means as much to Kendra as how delicious her food is. I highly recommend Kendra and her staff for all your catering needs!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
