I'm so glad Thumbtack connected me with Jorge Vasquez for our paint job. We had a room painted and baseboards removed. Outstanding job - very clean lines around doors/windows and ceiling. We were also very impressed with the clean-up and Jorge made sure we took our time and really inspected his work before he left. I would hire him again for future projects.

Jacques, reversed the swing on my laundry room door and repaired several windows that were misaligned in their track and pulley system. He came out to provide an estimate and was flexible in scheduling the time to complete the work. He arrived on time (early actually) on the day we agreed to complete the work and completed both projects to our satisfaction. I would hire him again.

Don was very knowledgeable on what needed to be done on the 2 windows in my room & the living room. The job he did was perfect I am so pleased with the end result you can't tell where all the damage was done after he finished the work. The price he charge was way below what I thought I would have to pay for the repairs! He always cleaned up after he finished doing something. I would highly recommend him on his work he has done. Very professional work ethics!!!

Dave replaced a window sill and re-worked some stairs for me so they would be more stable. He also built railings and helped me attach a ramp to the stairs. Dave is honest, fair priced, hard working and a quick study. I would highly recommend him!

I do not even know where to start. If Bruce lived in a different time he would have been a Renaissance man. He possesses a masterful blend of artistry and intellect. The first project he did for us was to redo a simple laundry room. This entailed making templates and installing granite for a counter with a sink and a making a folding table/counter. He had to repair some sheet rock and repaint the room. The results were impressive. The second job he did was design and build a workbench for my art studio. His architectural renderings were impressive. He measured the length of my arms to insure I was able to reach the peg board behind the work bench. He thought to install a length of electrical outlets beneath the lip of the bench. The side drawers are easily opened and closed and the paper trays are large enough to hold my watercolor paper. He is extremely meticulous and his work shows this. He installed glass doors in the basement studio to allow more light to enter the area. When this wasn't sufficient, he cut through the concrete and installed a window (with molding and a sill). His masterpiece was the deck he built for us. With Bruce's skill and our artistic input he produced a showpiece deck. The three tiered deck allows for minimal visual obstruction of the woods below. He installed tiny lights on the stairs to make them safer in the evening. He thought of these. He made a portion of the deck curved to provide harmony with the landscaping. Again, his renderings were precise and impressive. He laid everything out carefully and was always thinking ahead. Our deck is magnificent. He handled all the paperwork for the permits as well. On a smaller scale Bruce hung paintings, our TV, glass doors leading to a bonus room, fixed all our leaky faucets and provided names when we needed a generator and a water softening system installed. Bruce is one of a kind in that he is masterful in so many areas and knows when to get a consult. He is prompt and ready to work hard. He put in very long hours, cleaned up and just did amazing work. I still look forward to having him finish an upstairs loft, a bathroom in our studio and build a space for a china hutch. I feel so fortunate that we found Bruce and would give him the highest of recommendations. He really is a Master of many things! He is also very easy to talk to and to work with.

Marc came to my home on time as discussed and I asked him for a quote on a new deck and replacement windows for my home. He was very knowledgeable and helpful and took the time to explain the process to me. I hired him and he went from there, very punctual and neat and did a fantastic job, and made what I thought difficult seam easy. His price was very reasonable for his top notch service. I highly recommend him with no hesitation.

We had an incident where one of our basement windows had broken. Victor came to the house the next day to measure the three windows for replacement (we decided now was the time to replace them all). That evening we had an estimate emailed to us, and the pricing was good. Victor ordered the windows, and the day they came in he called to schedule installation for the next day. He was on time, quick, and the work is very high quality. After installation he walked us through opening the windows, showing the completed work, and gave us recommendations regarding the rain/snow covers we had over the windows. We have plans for the basement which includes finishing it, update flooring, etc and plan to work with Victor for that as well.

Roland did an excellent job. I needed to replace picture windows in my entry way that were both too wide and too short for the enclosure. Roland was able to open the enclosures and retrofit pieces of wood in the bottom to create a matching base to the front door. He was also able to remove an old rotting sill and create a identical one for replacement. He was not afraid to let me do some of the work, like removal of old windows, on my own time (to help me keep my cost down). His price was very fair for his work.

I gotta say I was extremely happy with Nescor.. Yes its not 5 star, but let me explain. 15 years being a home owner means you probably have dealt with so many different contractors. I don't like Generalizing, but they can be a difficult lot. I needed gutters replaced, some minor things fixed, and my bathroom needed a new tiny window. I called around ,signed up on some online services.. and my phone was ready to explode from the calls. Note to all, get a alt number (burner phone) The reason I am posting it at 4 star is the aggressiveness of the sales putch. Sales guy kept just going on and on, I kept saying "YES!!!". he seemed to think I was saying no.. He just didn't get it. I found thumbtack the other day while looking for a new roofer. still want to see what's out there sorry guys ... Liked the app, I left this for them .

Jim was very responsive to the initial request by reviewing the job site late the same day. He did an excellent job preparing and repairing the windows. Jim was informative in pointing out elements of the job I missed. He made the modifications and completed the job on time. His price was extremely reasonable. I would use Jim again if I have any additional projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
