My son is a 15 year old in Honors Algebra II at Worcester Academy. He never had much trouble with math in the past, but this class was challenging him and his grades were slipping. Oliver really helped him to fill in the missing parts of his understanding and to feel more confident. My son really liked Oliver's approach and enjoyed his tutoring sessions, and his grades improved significantly. Oliver is very easy to work with as a parent-- he is responsive to calls and messages, understanding about schedule changes, and is very generous with his time-- we scheduled for an hour, but Oliver often stayed longer when he was really engaged in his teaching. I would definitely hire Oliver again for my kids.

The online tutoring works really well. At first I was hesitent, but my daughter took to it immediately. We had a traditional math tutor for her in middle school who would visit twice a week. Online is much more convenient. Professor Holton is a fabulous instructor. We couldn't be more pleased

Glenn is an excellent math tutor and I highly recommend him! His attention to detail, impartial attitude and pride what he does make him an inspirational tutor. Glenn met with my son and me and analyzed my son's performance, provided additional practice problems and basic guidance steps for him to follow. In my opinion having a foundational understanding of middle school math really helps pave the way for future success in high school and college. I can't stress the importance of making sure that your child has a really solid math foundation and Glenn was capable to achieve that with my son. My son's grades improved immediately but what is most important his confidence levels improved as well.

Debi has done an excellent job with my 12 year old son. She has been able to help him with math, geography, and English. He has even emerged from the tutoring sessions with a smile on his face, despite his general distaste for homework and a grumpy disposition on the way in. Thank you Debi!

My son is a student at Cranston H.S. West who never struggled with a class until Algebra 2. A Mechanical Engineering degree gave me the knowledge to help my son with math, but unfortunately not the patience. After some research I contacted Jonathon and set up an appointment for an initial one-hour session. I figured I had nothing to lose. During the first session I sat in Jonathon’s living room and casually audited the class. I became more impressed as time progressed. He casually became acquainted with my son and in no time they were comfortable with each other. Jonathon stressed the importance of being organized and having good note-taking skills. He spent a few minutes covering tips to help my son accomplish this. After a couple of one hour sessions my son had a math test (in school) and scored the highest grade in the class. He also told me that he is raising his hand frequently to answer questions. Obviously his confidence was increasing and was feeling good about himself. Jonathon was not just showing my son how to solve problems like teachers do in school, he was teaching him how to understand problems and learn math. My son actually looks forward to his sessions with Jonathon. As an Engineer, a parent, and a former college teacher, I highly recommend Jonathon as a math tutor for anyone requiring help.

While I could endlessly sing Jan Dunlevy’s praises for all the help, support and encouragement that she provided to my 9 year old daughter, I think that the greatest testament to her work is what my daughter stated when I told her that I was going to write a review about Jan: “She is the best tutor ever, and here’s why: she is so very nice and was determined to help me with my reading, writing and math. She taught me to stick with my work and how not to get distracted, like when I didn’t know what paragraph I was reading. And I love that she taught me to write my name in cursive. She is just great, and I totally recommend her to any kid!”

Hey-Sung has worked two of my children navigate upper level middle school and high school math classes. She has provided consistent guidance and positive support for both boys. She has made herself available for extra sessions and has helped "on the fly" online or by reviewing "snapshots" by cell phone of problems that they are having trouble with. When transportation and timing have been an issue, she has worked with my older son by skype. Hey-Sung really takes an interest in how they are doing and wants to help them succeed. Perhaps as invested in how they are doing as they are.

      About

I have my bachelor's and master's degrees in civil and environmental engineering. I have been tutoring students in math for the past 10-15 years in pre-algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, geometry and trig. I also have my license for middle school math and tutored students at the Greater Lawrence Technical School who were in danger of not passing the 10th grade math MCAS. I love what I do. I love getting into the mind of students, to see where the gaps are, filling them in and watching their confidence grow.

      About

I tutor mathematics to students in grades 6-8. I teach them the common course standards for middle school math. Students can travel to my location, or I can travel to them.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

      • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
